this is Lisa Howell with the American Board and this is a presentation walkthrough for the Florida American Board Ambassador Program PowerPoint this is the PowerPoint that every ambassador receives when you start working with the American Board and we ask that you use it for every presentation that you do at the start of the presentation we'd like you to have this specifically this particular slide up on the overhead behind you as people walk in so what I'm going to do right now this entire video I'm going to walk through the presentations slide by slide and go through the how a presentation should be given for the American Board if you're not familiar with PowerPoint all you have to do is open the file go up here to slideshow and click play from start and that will open it on the full screen as you can see the way I've set this up it kind of cuts off so I'm not going to fullscreen it here for this video but that's how you would set it up to be displayed any place that you give a presentation should be should have technology to put this on some kind of a screen or an overhead projector or something like that and we do ask that you show it at every single event that you do because it's a great backdrop to get people information while they're asking you questions and while you're going over the program so this is what we're going to use so let's walk through this start on this slide have it up when people come in the room start by introducing yourself and a little bit about why you work for the American Board what is it about helping education that you've that draws you you would at this point ask people to sign the sign-in sheet you need to make sure anyone who attends your presentation does the sign-in sheet if they don't then you don't get credit for them attending or enrolling so get them to sign the sign-in sheets mention who you are why you work for the American Board or work with the American Board and then I'd say something to the effect of I'm going to walk you through the program now and the specific ins and outs if you have any questions I ask that you please hold them until the end of the presentation and then I'd be happy to answer any question that you have having said that I would go on to the first slide and each slide you should be able to answer or speak to most of the presentation without reading directly off the slides so if you have to look at the slides every once in a while that's fine but we do ask we've had people in the past who would just read the presentation read the slide slide after slide that's very disengaging for anyone who's in the audience so you should be able to memorize enough of this that you're not just reading straight from the PowerPoint we like to go over the fact that we're a non-profit we like to go over the fact that we're an alternative route to teacher certification and we like to go over the fact that we are for career changers those are three key points in what we offer to people who are looking for a program like ours so then we move on to how our program works I like to mention you know all you need to do our program you don't have to apply there's no you know acceptance or refusal what you have to have is a bachelor's degree in any field and you have to pass a standard background check if you have those two things you can enroll it anytime we're an open enrollment program what you do to complete our program is study four and take two exams a subject area exam and our ptk or professional teacher knowledge exam you take and pass these two exams in order to earn our certification so for Florida this is a little big hold on one thing I like to say about the general knowledge exam in Florida is a lot of people have a difficult time passing it and we know that so what we like to tell people is if you don't have what's called the TPP excuse me the TTP in Florida if you don't have the temporary teaching permit yet don't get it because if you get it the Florida Board of Education requires that you take the general knowledge exam if you don't yet have the TTP then you can take our program and you're exempt from taking the Florida general knowledge exam and that's one less exam for you and that's a pretty big deal so moving on to the next slide how it works we like to point out you have 12 months to complete the program and then once you're ready you can take and pass our two exams at any Pearson VUE testing center I always like to point out also that the average time that it takes for people to complete our program is 7 to 10 months we've had people complete it in about - sometimes people have to take it it takes them a bit more and they have to purchase an extension but for the most part it's easy to complete in less than a year you do it at your own pace and we always like to remind people of that frequently throughout the presentation after both exams have passed you get your certification from us well you need to do is walk through step by step how the program how the program works especially after people have finished our two exams so that they know what's required so you'd walk through this slide as well again you don't have to have it memorized verbatim but you should be able to say what what the slide says without reading directly off it we always like to go through the resources that we offer one full year to our online certification program we have online study materials we don't send anything out we don't send out textbooks we don't send out readers we don't send out quizzes everything is online and we like to make sure that we hit that point during this slide in fact I'll add a note down here everything is online I also like to point out the initial testing fee is included in the cost of the program so your first attempt at each exam at both exams I should say is included in the cost of enrollment if you do not pass either of the exams and you have to do a retake you get to retake attempts at each exam so you get three attempts at each exam total but only the first one is covered in the cost of the program if you have to redo an exam a retake is a hundred and ninety five dollars and that's just that's what Pearson charges us and we pass that cost along so I'm not sure why this is off mm fixed that so you see this very important question we get quite often what about student teaching how can you train to be a teacher without student teaching well our program was designed for career changers who have been working in another industry for anywhere from a couple of years to a couple of decades so the people who do our program are not you know 20 year olds who might not have a lot of life experience student teaching is not required for our program we recommend substitute teaching but what we like to tell people who seem very doubtful that a program could work without student teaching is look you've got people who have 20 years experience in another field they may or may not need to do a semester of student teaching maybe what they need to do is substitute teaching maybe they need to learn on the job in the classroom but student teaching is definitely not for everyone it doesn't prepare people for the classroom you know across the board some people need that they do very well with it there's also a lot of people that don't necessarily need that particular format of learning so our program is doesn't require student teaching that way no one has to quit their job and work without pay for a semester student teaching at a school you can earn our certification without leaving your current position and some of this is a little bit off subject areas offered in Florida specifically this is the slide that you will probably come back to at the end your presentation because this is the one where people tend to have the most questions what subject areas are offered so we like to walk through the area that we offer and the grade range and I always like to point out if you want to do middle or high school figure out the you know the subject area that you like again substitute teaching is the best way to do this you do not want to get a biology degree and then figure out that really you'd rather be teaching elementary education or English and then figure out that you really would rather be teaching science so again we recommend the substitute teaching but this is the list of subject areas that we offer you'll notice this little star down here premium plan available for these specific subject areas premium is just a couple of additional resources it's an additional quiz Bank it's some additional reading materials so what we like to tell people is you don't really need the premium plan the standard plan which is what we have for all of these the standard plan was designed to be sufficient it should give you everything you need to study for and pass the exams if you really want the extra quiz Bank if you really want the extra materials we've got them it's a two hundred dollar add-on charge to the program but if you really want those materials we do have them it's just the course is designed so that you don't need them to pass okay a special note just for the state of Florida if you want to certify with special ed and this is something we like to tell people because a lot of people do come to us wanting to certify for special ed you've got to certify in another area as well typically if you want to certify in two areas with our program you'd have to pay an additional 850 but because Florida mandates this we offer elementary education free of charge so for the price of one enrollment one subject area you can get special education and elementary education if you use our program to transfer from a temporary teaching permit you have to take the Florida general we forgot to put the word knowledge in there goodness gracious so this will be updated so this is what we went over earlier if you already have your TTP you have to take the Florida general knowledge exam Department about requirements please walk through this point by point so that anyone attending your presentation understands what happens after they get the certification from us they have to apply to the Florida D we complete the appropriate documents get a position then you have to go back to the Florida do-e and submit basically the letter the job offer and do a criminal background check with them you do have to do a criminal background check with us it's the same basic federal background check there's nothing different but Florida makes us do it you have to do it twice basically so we like to reiterate some of this is Florida Department requirements not ours after that you'd apply for a three-year non-renewable provisional license all that means it's your initial certification during that time you have to jump through a few hoops you have to teach for a year while doing a mentorship program complete the licensure forms and then you move to a renewable certificate and that's standard pretty much for any new teacher anywhere we're coming to the end of the presentation now so what I like to do is go back over the benefits of using American Board the fact that we're online self-paced affordable we're like a sixth the cost of a master's program you don't have to take time off from work you don't have to take out loans you can study you know whatever time suits you but we'd like to remind people why they should choose the American Board because we're a much more affordable feasible option for people who have busy lives so this is this is the point in the presentation where you would hit that home again then the last slide you put up is the contact information slide so I would leave this up I would say you know if you have any other information that you want this is a good place to go to to get it and then I would start taking questions with this up behind me on the screen so you can open the floor to questions if someone has a question you need to go back say you know you can go back to the slide this is when we go back to the most often or sometimes we'll go back to the Florida Department of Education requirements and then I would once the question is answered flip back to this slide so that people can see it and people see and people see what they the contact information that they need in order to reach out for assistance so flip back to this slide at the very end to close your presentation if anyone asks for brochures or business cards or anything like that we tell them really all you need is the URL you need the web address go there for information we find for the most part when we send out flyers or brochures that people tend to just lose them or use them as bookmarks so we don't offer those tell them you know what really just you need to go to the website call the enrollment specialists if you need some details you'll get signed up for a free
