hi everybody while we're waiting to make sure that everybody gets a chance to join i want you to take a look at the signs on this first slide and see how many states you can find that supported ike for president just kind of look through there and see how many you can count 18's pretty darn close must have been a really short person be sure that your microphones are on mute when we're doing the presenting part but then when i ask questions make sure you unmute yourself if you would like to answer okay because we'd sure like you to participate we want to be able to hear you okay all right well welcome everybody and welcome we want to welcome you to another virtual lesson from ike education and i'm maria and this is another uh thinking thursday and we are so happy that you're joining us today and we're going to spend some time discussing why president eisenhower was so popular with the american people and why so many people wanted him to run for president we're also going to take a look at some presidential campaign slogans and discuss the role that they played in promoting different candidates so the question i had asked at the beginning was how many states could you count in that picture that supported eisenhower how many states are on there from different sign that from different states how many signs do we have out there from other areas any ideas 15 is pretty close there are actually 20 on there 20 different states okay why was eisenhower's slogan so iconic take a look at that little button there i like i can use to ike the tides with ike ike likes us too we like i look like a pretty happy happy group in there don't they well in 1952 and again in 1956 eisenhower ran for president with one of the most iconic presidential slogans of all time i like ike now what in the world do you think iconic means any ideas on what the word iconic means his slogan was i like ike remember if you want to talk be sure that you unmute yourself okay and teachers if you would prefer to to tell us what that what the students have said that sign to any ideas on what iconic means oh something we should remember and even though i wasn't alive when eisenhower ran for president i remember as a little girl when people would talk about president eisenhower i remember that slogan i like ike it was short it was sweet it many people knew it many people loved it so it was well known it was interesting it rhymed it was fun to say aloud so a good slogan could help promote a presidential candidate and would be very very good when they would run when they would have their platform and they would be running if you if there were something short and sweet that was fun to say out loud that was interesting and that really kind of pumped you up so that you would want to vote for that person that would be an iconic slogan and i like ike was one of the most iconic slogans of all time how did i become the republican candidate well after world war ii eisenhower served as army chief of staff from 1945 to 1948 president of columbia university from 1948 to 1953 and as the first supreme commander of nato the north atlantic treaty organization from 1950 to 1952. well in mid 1951 ike was in paris he was working really hard to lay the groundwork for the new military alliance destined to protect western europe from soviet advance he was 60 years old and he was a grandfather and i can relate to that because i'm 60 right now and i'm a grandmother and he wanted nothing more than to complete his mission return to columbia university and at some point retire and i can relate to that because i retired from teaching two years ago and i really really miss it but i love doing this so that i can come and spend time with you guys so i can still get some of that teaching experience in there and one thing i love is my grandchildren and he wanted to spend time with his as well but he was also very worried about the future of our country in the uncertain atmosphere of the post-war war era there he is as the k as a candidate with he and his lovely wife mamie and they're on a train they're going around and they are trying having rallies and having people come to them so that they can talk to them about uh what he could do for america and what's better than having a general be president can you think of any other generals that became president love the country hmm you guys think of anybody else think about the very first president what was his name anybody remember him george washington well it certainly worked for him ike which was eisenhower's nickname was a five-star general and he led the allied forces in world war ii and some of the characteristics that icad that made people just really really like and appreciate him first of all he was a natural-born leader he was organized strong confident extremely likable devoted to his cause loyal very cautious he didn't just run in and do something i mean he made a strategy he was he um definitely looked things over and checked things out before jumping into anything so very careful and he could even be gentle when he wanted to be so he was he was a very very loving grandfather so many people liked him because he knew how to compromise and get people to work together for a common cause do you does anyone know what compromise means that's kind of a big word any ideas on compromise oh there's a good one maybe giving in when i think of compromise they think of when i was young and i had a cookie and my little sister wanted a cookie but there was only one and i didn't want to share so my mom made us compromise and what she did is she cut the cookie in half i got half and my little sister got half so we compromised that excuse me so each of us got some of it we didn't get exactly everything we wanted but we shared it so each of us got some part of it so we compromised and we were able to come up with a solution and one that we could both agree on and that made us both happy so even before dwight eisenhower agreed to run for president boy his supporters were out there having rallies making signs and jingles in support of him and both the republicans and the democratic parties wanted him to run for them well it took some convincing but i didn't want to be political he said that soldiers protect all people and so at that time the republican party platform aligned with ike's ideas so he ran on the republican ticket he really didn't want to be president but he was so loyal to his country that he thought boy if enough people want me to do it then he was devoted to his country more than anything and so he decided he was going to do it well this is rather interesting tvs at the time when ike was running for president were just becoming popular in the home that's probably hard for some of you to to believe because you can watch a movie on your phone on your ipad on your laptop i mean you can watch a movie from anywhere well back then people usually sat by the radio and they listen to programs that way so tvs were a new thing and man everybody wanted to have one in their home so eisenhower's presidential commercial was something new and exciting for voters to see and hear so this was the beginning of presidential campaigning on television what we're going to do right now is watch eisenhower's campaign commercial that was created by walt disney many of you have watched disney movies and irving berlin and after we get done with it we're going to discuss what in the commercial excuse me yeah what in the commercial stood out to you were you entertained can you remember the slogan and what was the point of the commercial how did it make you feel so the first one we're going to see is isaac eisenhower's president you like everybody thankful visitors hang out the bananas we'll say thank you washington we don't want john or hurry let's do that big job right yeah you're like [Music] now is the time for all good americans to come to the aid of their country well what do you think of that commercial a little different than the ones that we see today right what sticks out to you in that commercial did it make you feel kind of happy kind of peppy you just had kind of it had a nice beak a little song that went with it and a really simple slogan right there was that iconic slogan again i like art you like i like like everybody likes so it was one of those that you kind of get your the tune in your head and you kind of start singing it when you go along like some of the commercials that we have today and remember it was time to be good to your country you were supposed to come to the aid and ike was going to be our the one that took care of the country made it stable made everybody secure now we're going to look at some other presidential campaign commercials and answer the same question so what sticks out to you were you entertained or do you remember the slogan or point of the commercial now we're going to take a look at president kennedy's campaign commercial he won't try something new a man who's old enough to know i'm young enough to do it well it's up to you it's up to you it's strictly up to you do you like a man who answers straight the man who's always there we'll measure him against the others and when you compare you'll cast your vote for kennedy and a change that's overdue so it's up to you it's up to you to strictly up to your candidate [Laughter] were any of you able to remember the name of the person that was running pretty simple huh kennedy i wonder how many times we actually heard kennedy that one was a little bit different wasn't we had actual people in it and it showed actual situations that were going on in the country at the time that president kennedy was running is there anything that stood out to you in that one instead of cartoons and remember they they said that they wanted someone old enough to know but young enough to do they wanted them to have all the knowledge that they needed and he was young enough that he could take care of things and that one again was to have a little song a little jingle to it that was kind of fun to bounce along too kind of peppy to make you feel a little happy inside next up is president reagan's campaign commercial let's look at some of the same things there there's anything that sticks out to you if it's entertaining you remember the slogan or the point of the commercial it's morning again in america today more men and women will go to work than ever before in our country's history with interest rates at about half the record highs of 1980 nearly 2 000 families today will buy new homes more than at any time in the past four years this afternoon 6 500 young men and women will be married and with inflation of less than half of what it was just four years ago they can look forward with confidence to the future it's morning again in america and under the leadership of president reagan our country is proud and stronger and better why would we ever want to return to where we were less than four short years ago [Music] how is that one different from the other two it was looked a little bit more modern right than what the other ones were did anybody want to get up and march around and sing that song dave you're sleepy yeah kind of just kind of calming to me till this time it was calming and peaceful and relaxing hopeful definitely hopeful remember he said that under president reagan our country's prouder stronger better why did they want anything less talked about lots of people getting married and they would be able to provide for their families and take care of things so things were just great everybody appeared to be happy so that was kind of a calming one i think to me maybe you feel like everything is going to be the final campaign commercial we're going to take a look at is president obama's so think about these things what sticks out to you if it's entertaining and if you can remember the point or the slogan over the slogan on this [Music] it was a creed written into the founding documents [Music] [Music] yes is feel ah it is in black and white but it's it was modern times definitely maybe they used the black and white you know for a purpose so they didn't have a lot of color in it but it was very um precise when you looked at it it was very clear yeah the music was good did you notice did you recognize any of the people you had some sports stars on there we had some uh actors singers in fact the one that wrote this song was a singer johnny legend and they took his speech and then made it into a song and there were three words that were constantly repeating hearing that song does anybody know what those three words are right yes we can so how did it make you feel were you pumped up when you kind of borrowed when they got done how did that look [Music] change okay it just made me think okay yes we can we can do anything as a people so that was another that was our final uh campaign commercial but you can see um how commercials can really reach into the heart of the person that's watching it the people that are watching it and it can greatly influence them and so they have to take a look at different things that will appeal to different people and use different techniques and each one of those commercials did that and even though we look back at ike so we think oh my goodness you know all those little people that were marching if you noticed it did show them that they're all different occupations of people and back at that time that was something you know that tv seeing that commercial was something so brand new it was just amazing and so you can kind of see how times have changed with their commercials but commercials definitely do make something stick in your mind perhaps you've watched the commercial there was a little jingle on it you can't get it out of your head now that's what they want those presidential commercials to do they want you to remember that slogan okay well we looked at some presidential slogans on commercials so now we're going to look at sub and print we're going to look at these presidential slogans throughout time and based on what we've learned about slogans we're going to take a look at which president and their slogan do you think would have won for example the first one i like dwight d eisenhower was running against adelaide stevenson in 1952 if you take a look at ike's first of all you've got i like ike and the other slogan is adelaine estes the bestest so i the grammar on that one kind of gets me i guess but i like this one too the picture gets me look how happy he looks he looks like somebody's grandpa doesn't he he looks so kind and then look at mamie which is his wife i'm gonna i'm gonna have you notice all this because we're gonna look at something a little bit later um in our ike artifact um museum and i'm going to have to take a look at her gloves can you see her she's got gloves on her hands as she's raising her hair well anyway which one do you think won we know right i like ike so adelaine estes evidently wasn't the bestest because they did not win did they all right let's look at another one this was the 1848 campaign slogans of zachary taylor and lewis cass zachary taylor's slogan was for president of the people louis cass's slogan was the sub treasury and the tariff of 46. well i don't know if that is exciting to you but it's not not really exciting to me but when you look at zachary taylor's he's the president of the people and who votes for the president the people and those people if he's going to be in support of you and do what you ask him to do they really liked that slogan and so he won how about these two in 1852 this was the campaign slogans for winfield scott and franklin pierce and winfield scott said the hero of many battles and he was a union general but did fight many battles and franklin pierce before he was president there was a president by the name of polk and so his slogan stated we poked you in 44 well we shall pierce you with 52. so that one kind of has a play with the words poked and pierced because um that pierce is a little bit of a stronger word than poke and so uh we'll take a look at who won that one and it was poke we poked in 44 we shall pierce you in 52. so i guess the country got pierced then in the 1864 campaign slogans you might even know who wins if you know who your presidents were definitely this was uh the 1864 campaign slogan between abraham lincoln and he was running for his second term so he'd already been president for four years and his slogan was don't change horses midstream which is kind of a funny way to say if things are going great and i'm halfway through why change it why it's like if you were crossing a stream let's say the water got deep and you were on a horse and that horse was doing just fine why would you want to get off and get on a different one but that might not be able to take you the rest of the way so he is on it was a play on words and it was a pretty good one and the other one was george mcclellan and his slogan was an honorable permanent and happy peace that was not bad right because everybody wants to be happy they'd like to have peace be permanent but guess who won abraham lincoln don't change horses midstream which is a fun way to use a fun way to say finally excuse me we have the 1896 campaign slogans of william jennings brian and william mckinley william jennings brian's slogan was no cross of gold no crown of thorns and william mckinley's was patriotism protection and prosperity they used alliteration on his and that makes it kind of fun to say patriotism protection and prosperity three p's and it would help it help you to remember that too because you would know his slogan had those three p's and he won in that year now words can carry a lot of power and that can be good or bad okay and i want you to look at these three slogans they span over 55 years of politics first of all as you look at them what do they all have in common do you notice any similarities in those three posters one was kennedy one was reagan one was trump anything that you notice that's similar about them [Music] they have the patriotic colors red white blue all of them do we have two that have pictures one doesn't right yep two of them have the word president great great ah if you take a look they all have the word great in them don't they great tony the tiger there's greatness in 1960 when kennedy won there's great again in 1980 when reagan won and there's great in the last one when trump won in 2016. so words the type of words that you use can be very very powerful in your slogan whatever poster whatever you use this choice of words that you have definitely makes a difference and it really does help promote you as a candidate now with every great slogan there are lots and lots and lots that are not so great so we're going to take a look at three examples of some really bad slogans that were not successful and this first one gets me every time i'm not a witch i'm you what in the world that was the campaign for republican senate christine o'donnell addressing her past with practicing witchcraft now when i when i look at that and i think i like ike which is fun to say aloud at rhymes compared to i'm not a witch i'm you i don't know it just to me does not make any sense but that one was a thumbs down she got a thumbs down on that slide the next one we're going to look at was jet when jeb bush was trying to become the third bush in the white house because remember we had two bush presidents before and his slogan said jeff can fix it well many people compared that slogan to an advertisement for a plumber if it's broken jeff can fix it so that was unsuccessful so he got a thumbs down as well and then the last not so great slogan was one from alf landon when um he was running against roosevelt and he said let's make it a landing slide well the word the actual word landslide means when you win by a lot but he made a pun out of that by saying landon slide unfortunately it did not work and roosevelt won with a landslide so the land and slide was not successful now we're going to take a look at some artifacts with the i like ike slogan omnia and remember an artifact is an item made by humans that tells us about that person or time period so when we look at it i want you to think about what it's made of what was its purpose what does it tell us about that time period and why do you think or who do you think this artifact belongs to so we're going to switch over to um our i like ike 3d library and we'll go through these artifacts in just a moment all right oh there we go i just don't have the perfect touch like some people do i guess my finger is her fingers better i don't know what so let's take a look first of all at some campaign pins you can see that i like ike and what i love about this program is we can take that pin and move it around so you can see the front and the back cool see how it clips on to your blouse or your shirt and when i come sideways i'm going to turn it the other way it's a little easier but if as i go sideways can you see eisenhower's face right there that one's pretty cool isn't it you have the words right there and then when you turn it from when you look at it from the side you can actually see his face and here's some other pins and eisenhower's running mate was richard nixon so that's why somebody say i like eisenhower and nixon i like i i like ike and dick because dick is a a nickname for richard so we can kind of look at some of those what do you notice about all those pins can you tell me about all of those pins definitely we've got that red white and blue see the black of the pen you've just got that little it doesn't even clasp it just kind of you can just put put it on kind of pull it down onto your shirt or your lapel and it stays there but there's that iconic slogan and if you guys once we open back up at the museum when you guys come we can go around and we can actually see these things in real life but i love this program where we're able to bring this to you so there are some of the buttons and those were basically born by it or worn by anybody and everybody that supported ike so it wasn't just for men or just for women or just for adults or just for children i guess you can even put it on your dog collar if you wanted to and i think there were some people that loved ike so much they probably did the next thing we're going to look at is women's fashion and we have these again at the museum that you guys can actually see and i would love to model that dress for you but it wouldn't even go over my arm that's how tiny that dress is you can take a look back in those days this was kind of a fashion statement the moms when i was young a lot of them wore dresses and high heels and they didn't wear slacks during the day so a lot of women wore a dress that was shaped like that uh but when i when they were when eisenhower was running for president they created these ike dresses and there were many women that bought those and wore those in support of ike i think if you were walking down the street no one would would have to guess at who you like for president would they and the umbrella goes right along with that and if you look next to it see those gloves do you remember in that picture when it showed eisenhower and president eisenhower and mamie in the car and she was waving wearing gloves was a big fashion statement back during their time a lot of the women now we wear gloves if we're going outside to work or maybe it's cold if it's in the middle of the winter we want to wear a glove but back then that was a statement of fashion when the women would dress up they would put these beautiful gloves on and it made them look very very girly very pretty so that was a pair of the i like ike gloves so i've got a lot of women would have worn those and up at the top there's even some earrings and nowadays a lot of women have pierced ears they have a hole in the ear so they put earrings in but they're still there are still clip-ons and that's what this was called this was a pair of clip-on earrings see that little metal part in the back you put that put that part up underneath under your earlobe and then just close it and that would stay on and it was called a clip-on because it just clipped on your ears and you can see i can that when the writing is kind of fancy isn't it it looks really pretty so that was another fashion statement for women so a lot of women would wear those types of things a little different than us today as a mom i wore pants or sweats or shorts things like that i wore a dress maybe when i went to church or of course when i taught school i always wear dresses but but i didn't just wear it around the house like a lot of the house moms did back then and here's a couple of things for the men take a look at this one what is that you tell what that is looks kind of like a boat doesn't it that is an actual paper hat and i love it because when i was younger i worked in a hamburger place and we had hats like that our hats didn't say i like ike but they were they were that they were built like that they weren't really sturdy and you can kind of tell it was made out of paper and they would wear it when they would have rallies and things like that like if there's a a certain person you like who's running for office or a certain sports team you like or a musical band you like um or something with academics a lot of times right nowadays we might wear a sweatshirt or a t-shirt or a hat we might have a hat on or a headband or a bandana just show our support well back in those days people showed their support using some of these things you can tell the paper's kind of worn on there turned a little bit yellow which paper does and also back at that time lots of men wore suits when they were working and there's the ike tie it wasn't just a clip-on tie this one went around your neck and had to be tied which is why they called him tides by the way because they had to tie him but it's very very dressy and it says ike on it and we have ties that that can advertise lots of things my husband has a winnie the pooh tie and another one with some cartoon characters on it he's got a couple of ties for the college that he supports that type of thing so you can show your support in many ways just like they did back during that time so that's how the men shared who they were supporting now we have some campaign goodies maybe you would have gone to a rally um where they were supporting ike and everybody was cheering for him and and um having like a big party in in support of him so this first item whoops it says i like ike this little artifact what's it made out of can you tell paper you can kind of see that it's a little bit ripped it's a little bit worn i'm not sure i wouldn't want to drink out of it right at this point in time but at one time people i'm sure had punched in different drinks in there when they went to a rally there's the icon there's the iconic slogan i like ike it's red white and blue there's a picture of ike there's the elephant which is the symbol for the republican party i like this little message on the side he'll never win unless you register and vote so they were encouraging people to get out and vote nowadays if we go to rallies or to a ball game or to a concert or to a gymnastics program or anything like that you normally get plastic cups well back then it was paper and so the pl you know i don't know if you're like me but we've got all kinds of plastic tumblers from when my girls were young and we went to different activities of theirs or if we went to ball games or music programs or anything like that we would come home with a cup so i've got lots of those at my house and then we have this artifact i'll show you the front of it this one says clean up with ike look at that picture of him why would that be a fun way of using those words on that particular artifact clean up with ike can you tell what that is that my friends is a bar of soap it doesn't look like you might clean up with it today using that bar of soap because as it's aged it's kind of fallen apart hasn't it it's been well loved but it's changed colors a little bit it's kind of dissolved off the sides but that was a bar of soap and using cleanup with ike was a you know it was just fun like ike's going to come in and clean it up things are going to be better and what better way to clean up than with a bar of soap because when you come in inside before you have dinner you always wash your hands and clean up with some soap only now we have liquid soap a lot don't we we use liquid soap or we use wet ones those types of things sanitary the clorox wipes those types of things so that is the end of the artifacts from the museum remember if you come once the museum is open you can take a look at these artifacts too so we're going to slip right back into the keynote here in just a minute okay so take a deep breath relax oh take a little stretch oh there we go if you're kind of tired of sitting stretch put your leg arms way way way up and pull them down oh deep breath okay so let's do a quick review why was eisenhower's slogan so iconic remember iconic remember what that means easy to remember maybe fun to say short sweet one that just really got you got you going and wanted you to to get excited about that person and i love that picture when you look at that with president eisenhower and his wife mamie that is such a beautiful picture when i look at that he just looks like somebody's grandpa doesn't he he's kind but boy he was a fierce leader too if you take a look at the paper it says ike wins and i would say that he's pretty darn happy that he won so remember his slogan is easy to recognize i could recognize it even when i was a little kid and i wasn't even born when he was president and it was catchy remember the little song you like i like everybody likes ike and it's lasted way way way over time a long time so if you guys would like if you're running for um i know in a school here in abilene we have kids that run for student council and they have to come up with a speech and or a slogan to help them get elected and they have to give that speech to their students their fellow students and then they get voted in so if your teachers would like to expand on this program use what we've learned today and we want you to create your own slogan and once you've decided upon a winning slogan what can you create to get your message out could you create a sign a flag a pin the possibilities are endless oh my goodness you could come up with all kinds of ideas maybe you could come up with a little commercial i know when i taught fifth grade and we did reports on explorers our st my students had to come up with a little slogan or an activity to tell the rest of the class about their explorer and oh my gosh i had all kinds of great ideas we had songs that were sun poems that were written we had um game shows they would have the the the students be explorers and they would come on game shows and then ask ask them questions about their life and what they were what they would be remembered for and it was just such a fun way to to study for something instead of just reading from a book so you guys if you come up with some really cute slogans or some excellent ideas please forward them on to us here at ike education we would absolutely love to see what you guys are doing well whatever you decide to do we hope that you have fun with it so thanks so much for joining our virtual classroom today and we've hoped you enjoyed learning about eisenhower and his iconic presidential slogan now remember we have a thinking thursday live program each thursday at 10 a.m and 1 p.m central time and we'd love it if you would join us and if you want to see more of programs just like this How do you make a document that has an electronic signature?

How do you make this information that was not in a digital format a computer-readable document for the user? " "So the question is not only how can you get to an individual from an individual, but how can you get to an individual with a group of individuals. How do you get from one location and say let's go to this location and say let's go to that location. How do you get from, you know, some of the more traditional forms of information that you are used to seeing in a document or other forms. The ability to do that in a digital medium has been a huge challenge. I think we've done it, but there's some work that we have to do on the security side of that. And of course, there's the question of how do you protect it from being read by people that you're not intending to be able to actually read it? " When asked to describe what he means by a "user-centric" approach to security, Bensley responds that "you're still in a situation where you are still talking about a lot of the security that is done by individuals, but we've done a very good job of making it a user-centric process. You're not going to be able to create a document or something on your own that you can give to an individual. You can't just open and copy over and then give it to somebody else. You still have to do the work of the document being created in the first place and the work of the document being delivered in a secure manner."
