Where is cryptography typically used?
Cryptography makes secure web sites and electronic safe transmissions possible. For a web site to be secure all of the data transmitted between the computers where the data is kept and where it is received must be encrypted. Due to the large number of commercial transactions on the internet, cryptography is very key in ensuring the security of the transactions. Cryptography allows you to have confidence in your electronic transactions. Encryption is used in electronic transactions to protect data such as account numbers and transaction amounts, digital signatures replace handwritten signatures or credit card authorizations, and public-key encryption provides confidentiality. Key management is an important aspect in encryption that allows you to apply common encryption policies across all data on all managed devices. Cryptography is also used in access control to regulate access such as in satellite and cable TV. Without cryptography, hackers could get into our e-mail, eavesdrop on our phone conversations, tap into cable companies ,acquire free cable service, or break into our bank accounts. Time stamping is a cryptographic technique that can signNow that a certain electronic document, communication existed or was delivered at a particular time. In general, cryptography is an important way of achieving data confidentiality, data integrity, user authentication and non-repudiation.More information on cryptography is provided in the link belowUnderstand Cryptography

These certificates can prove to be helpful for many online transactions that require digital proof of identities and to receive and send information on the web safely.Organizations and firms, today require digital signature certificate to better facilitate communication and transactions between them and the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. For companies that have a turnover of more than INR 60 Lakhs have to apply for these certifications mandatorily, and it is considered a legally admissible instrument. Besides, it is always wise to get a digital signature as it offers a high level of security for online transactions by ensuring absolute privacy of the information exchanged. These certificates can also be useful for encrypting information that only the intended recipient can have access to. You can digitally sign information to assure the recipient that it has not been changed in transit, and also verify your identity as the sender of the message. There are two main types of Digital Signature Certificates Class 2 Certificates and Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate. A Class 2 Digital Signature Certificate is used by individuals and is available for download after verification based on a trusted and pre-verified database. Why does a digital signature certificate have a limited validity period?
Digital signature certificates have an explicit start date and an explicit expiration date. Most applications check the validity period of a certificate when the digital certificate is used. The signature certificate expiration date is also used for managing the certificate revocation list (CRL). A certificate is removed from the revocation list when its natural expiration date arrives. As such, generally the shorter the certificate validity period, the shorter the CRL.

How do we use cryptography today?
Try and imagine every possible communication you have during a day:You talk on the phone. You send SMS texts. You send emails. You send WhatsApp/Viber messages. Now try and think how would you feel if someone could easily eavesdrop on these conversations. Pretty uneasing eh?Cryptography -among other things- tries to make sure that a message sent from you (your voice, your text, your email) can be understood only by the person that is intended to get that message.I won't get into the mathematics behind it, but generally your message -which is essentially a sequence of "0" and "1" in our digital world- is encrypted (using Symmetric-key algorithm) by some key (which is agreed by both parties, by some other mathematics called Public-key cryptography) and the other party uses the same key to decrypt your message.TL;DR Internet (emails, login information, e-banking), mobile phones, car keys, everywhere

Why do some people oppose voting ID laws?
I am a liberal highly in favor of the concept of voting ID law, but staunchly against the law in practice. Voter ID laws are effectively a poll tax, and serve only to disenfranchise poor voters. When proponents of Voter ID laws are being honest, they admit it.Wisconsin’s voter ID sham: Republican rep admits the law targets Democrats — it’s time for the rest of the GOP to say it, tooAccidental Republican candor about voter-ID lawsWhat sealed my opposition to Voter ID law was my mother’s experience in renewing her Ohio state id.She’s 86 and has never driven, but got an Ohio state ID card when she moved there 11 years ago. It was not free. She doesn’t have much money, and she doesn’t drive. She had to impose upon friends to drive her to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) office, wait in line, and dip into her savings to pay for it since she, like most seniors, has a tight budget. The cost was a minor hardship, but she suffered with it.Since it is such a pain to physically get to the BMV office, she inadvertently let her ID expire. The expired ID was fine for almost anything she needed, since she doesn’t drink or fly. However, she needed a non-expired ID to vote. Surely there is a grace period for an expired license? Surely a senior citizen could easily get past this oversight? No! When she showed up to the BMV with her expired ID and the documents she had used a decade before, she was informed that she had to provide an ORIGINAL, certified birth certificate and marriage certificate, both of which would cost her money to get. The copies she had were unacceptable, even though they had been used ten years before and even though she had been issued an ID before. So she spent the money and started the 6–8 week wait. When the birth certificate arrived, it had the wrong name. The vital records clerk in Pennsylvania, looking at the microfilm copy of the VERY SAME BIRTH CERTIFICATE WE HAD A COPY OF, transcribed the information into a computer record, but wrote the last letter of her first name as an “a” instead of an “e.” They tried to take that to the BMV but were turned away because the names did not perfectly match between her old ID and the birth certificate. Showing the official, and unofficial certificates together did not move them to see the obvious transcription error. Since, the new, certified, “official” birth certificate had her name WRONG, we got to engage in two weeks of back and forth phone calls with Pennsylvania Vital Records and a comedy of bureaucratic errors before a new, corrected birth certificate arrived. 10 weeks had passed.Armed with the official, corrected birth certificate, a marriage certificate and her old id card, she was rejected AGAIN because the middle name was an initial on the marriage certificate, but spelled out on the birth certificate (or the reverse, I don’t recall which). The fact that one document used an initial and the other used a spelled out name caused her to be rejected a third time. Now she would have to go back and fight with the Vital Records department in Pennsylvania to harmonize the documents from 1930 and 1954, respectively, and pay to get a new certified marriage certificate. All of this called for extra fees.Fed up, my sister in law called her local state representative and told them the story. That person than called the executive management of the BMV and read them the riot act. It’s a good thing, because our next stop was the newspaper. So, on the fourth visit, after dozens of hours, unjustifiable stress on my mother, signNow cash out of her pocket and the enthusiastic intervention of an elected official, she finally got an id card. This was complete and total bullshit. It was a hardship for my mother, but would be impossible for people without money, transportation, and advocates. My mom is not alone. Check out this news story which was on its way to a less happy ending until the press shamed the bureaucrats into action:. 92-year-old Texas woman denied photo ID to vote: “Not to be able to vote breaks my heart”Because of this nonsense, I contend that modern non-ID voting works well enough against tampering thanks to the registration process, signature tracking, and by election monitors. Unless states make it free and easy to get acceptable ID, Voter ID laws are nothing but disenfranchisement machines. I would prefer a smattering of vote fraud over widespread voter disenfranchisement.

What are "digital certificates" and "signatures"?
Digital Signature is use for the verification of the message. It's an encrypted hash of the message. With the help of digital signature, a recipient can check whether the message is original or tampered, by hashing the received message and through comparing the values with the digital signature. In order to decrypt the signature, the related public key is necessary. These Digital certificate works as a public keys to person or any other entity. If digital certificate is not there, then signature can be easily forged, as the recipient will not be able to check if the public key is of sender o...
