let's talk about goals [Music] either you are chucking along on your news resolutions and they are going fantastic or you have completely forgotten about those until just now regardless of where you are i hope that these tips can help you to focus less on the goal itself and focus more on the habits that will get you to that goal habit building is hard and it's tricky there's entire books and there's basically an entire industry that works around teaching you how to create better habits because we're not very good at it there is a really simple way to help you form better habits and that is feedback loops now pretty much any productivity or goal related book on the market right now we'll talk about feedback loops but i want to simplify it basically all a loop is is stimulus a producing a reaction which produces more stimulus and that sounds complicated but you actually see this all the time in marketing tactics you spend money at a store you get store rewards and that triggers you to want to use those rewards come back and spend more money we see this across the board with everything you making a cup of coffee in the morning and feeling more awake so you create a copy cup of coffee the next morning we have thousands and thousands of these loops in our life and that's part of what makes life easier for us we develop these habits to make life quicker and simpler they're not bad but what is bad is when you have a negative habit built into a loop it makes hard to break that habit so what we can do is use those habits those existing habits and create really intentional loops to help us grow our goals so the key to better goal for yourselves is to create the loops in your own life and then use them to grow the habit that will benefit that goal so let's use the example of writing a book your goal has been to write a book but actually sitting down every day can feel very overwhelming or like you don't really know where to start you don't know exactly what you want to write about so what you want to do is create a loop for that habit of writing every single day it's a great way to grow in that goal start to see progress and even if you're not quite sure what you're sitting down to write it just gets you in the habit of writing which is the very first step to writing a best-selling novel so instead of focusing on that massive goal of actually publishing a book and becoming a bestseller and selling your book on amazon instead you can focus on the goal of writing a thousand words a day or maybe even 500 or just writing for 10 minutes and just brain dumping all of these are building blocks for that bigger goal but they are more manageable and a little easier to digest for this example i'm going to be using a tool called mirrorbook it's a platform designed specifically to write books and get feedback on those books obviously you can use any tool and if you're not writing a book for your goal you'll want to find a tool that works for you keep in mind though when you are looking for tools to help you establish and start to build these habits and eventually to reach those goals you want to find tools that help and not hinder you something like maribook is a really easy to learn tool you don't have to know all the features to be able to use it and it makes it very easy to just quickly get on and write without needing to understand the entire process so find something that is easy to use really clean and simple and something that you genuinely like using that'll make all of this a lot easier okay so if we're gonna write a book first we need a stimulus personally i enjoy writing while drinking a cup of coffee i already drink a cup of coffee every day so that's an easy point in my morning routine to build on so what i'm gonna do is i'm going to make a cup of coffee for myself i'll sit down on my computer and i'll set a 15-minute timer then i just write whatever comes to mind is good enough i'm not going to worry about someone reading this i'm not going to worry about it being good or my spelling i'm just going to write for 15 minutes and i'm also not going to worry about the word count over time as i do 15 minutes more and more the word count will take care of itself i'm going to become a faster writer i'm going to become quicker at typing and i'm going to stop worrying less about the mistakes that happen what i like to do is i mute the timer or i just hide it all together so that if i'm in the middle of a thought or i get on a roll then i won't be interrupted by an alarm sound the idea here is just to write and focus only on that then what i'm going to do is i'm going to set a reward for myself and i think that this will completely vary on each person for me the actual like thought of just having completed that task is enough in a reward of itself i'm very proud of the fact that i stuck to a habit i'm trying to create i'm very happy with seeing a page full of writing at the end of it but you can set smaller goals for yourself you can set very small rewards they don't all have to be crazy and really large rewards it might be that you print out the page once you're done writing and you keep it in a drawer somewhere so you can see that drawer filling up it might be that you make a really yummy breakfast for yourself or you have an extra cup of coffee or you're allowed to pick up a cup of coffee from your local coffee shop or go for a walk outside or maybe just sit down and know that you got your task done for the day maybe your reward is candy whatever it is will be up to you the reward does not have to be large just enough of a happy positive thing to help your brain rewire itself for your brain to acknowledge that that habit loop was a good thing and that you will be rewarded when you complete it now the goal here is to try to do this over and over until it just becomes part of your day every time you taste a cup of coffee you should be like oh i should be writing even if it's way in a different time of day that you normally would write just that trigger alone should be enough to make you want to do that thing and again the trigger can be whatever you'd like anyway all you can do is piece and replace any piece of that equation you have the trigger you have the habit itself and then you have a reward for that habit as you start to build these loops into your day the next step that will really help you achieve your goals is to get some feedback get some other people involved to hold you accountable now this is a fine line because telling someone hey i'm going to write a best-selling novel that alone can feel like a reward and what you want to do is try to stay away from that you don't want to feel rewarded for saying you're going to do something because you haven't done it yet instead you want to be held accountable for something that you are planning to do something like marebook is a good thing for someone who wants to write a book because you can share your writing with your community and they can give you feedback on it so what i would do is i would share my pages with my husband at the end of every week and he needs to make sure that there are seven pages in there and if there aren't he'll call me out he'll say why didn't you write on this day or it kind of seems like you wrote a lot on this day and not this day and he doesn't have to read them but it is someone that will make sure that i'm sitting down in the morning and actually sticking to the habit that i'm sticking to this works for anything you can use a workout buddy that goes to the gym with you there are even apps specifically designed where every time you don't complete a desk you then have to pay money for not completing it there's a ton of different tools that you can use depending on what your goal is but the idea is to get some kind of accountability in place so that as you're building that habit loop and as it's still new to you you have someone holding you accountable for days that you miss and asking questions if you decide to give up on a goal that's okay but you should have a good reason for it and you should have to kind of answer why you would give up on a goal that you originally wanted to complete no matter what your goal is i hope that habit loops and accountability are two things that you can start to incorporate more if you haven't already i know that these two things have really helped me in my goals over the last few years and even just the accountability to myself has grown i feel like i have a lot more grit and a lot more self-control over the habits i set now because i've set these processes in place the more you do this the more natural it becomes and the easier it will be to find ways to do this in your own
