Hi. Lee Phillips. I want to talk about where people keep their legal documents the important stuff You stuff it in a safe deposit box, right? Wrong. The problem is the kids, you can't get into the safe deposit box. I actually had a safe deposit box. Kristy and I put a bunch of stuff in it 40 years ago. and we found the keys I didn't even know he had a safe deposit box. and trust me when you die the family isn't going to know there's a safe deposit box and they may not be able to get into it. So the documents--I don't know I don't think you want them there. When I do a living revocable trust, and a will, and that sort of stuff for people I, as the lawyer, always keep a file with an originally signed document in it. And that document, originally signed, is as good as anything. I tell my clients go home, put it in your file cabinet, and use it. These documents, most of them, are things that you use. Oh, you've got deeds. Do I need to keep a deed? No not really. It's on file down at the recorders office. Yeah it's a good idea to keep your deed. But if it gets burned up or you'll lose it don't worry about it. If my clients get their trust burnt up or their will burnt up, that's okay. I have another one. That's why I do that. But most of the documents are documents you're going to want to use. You use your living revocable trust all the time. The will, testamentary will or "pour over will" it pours over into the trust. It's a trust you have--it's a will you have as a companion to the trust you know, keep it with the trust. If you just have a will, well there was a law firm in Denver a while back and they figured out they had all of these wills in vaults that had big file cabinets and everything and they went through them and figured out that a large percentage of them of them the clients were dead and the family had gone through the probate process wrapping up mom and dad's estate as an intestate procedure a procedure without a will because the family didn't know where the will was. So you need to keep these documents like the wills and the trust's and things where everybody knows where they are and they can go get them when mom and dad die. Now in today's society a lot of states have passed laws which say if I have a PDF you know a computer file of the document that will work as an original and I have people who tell me that when Dad dies they're actually doing the business now they take a picture of the letters testamentary that's the thing you get when you probate everything the letters testamentary, the death...
