hey there once again self-storage investors Cotrell well here in this video I'm going to share something kind of cool with you I'm going to show you the story about the origins of the self storage industry from ancient beginnings to the present day fun fact did you know that the earliest documentation we have a publicly available storage in the US is in the late 1800s true story but even more interesting before we get into that I wanted to take a few moments to perpetuate three of the most interesting stories that predate the boring documented facts and these three origin stories actually take place in three great historical empires perhaps you've heard of them ancient China ancient Rome and the more recent British Empire but before we get to China there is hard archaeological evidence of storage in general that goes back as much as 8,500 years ago around the time when humans transitioned from being nomadic hunter hunter gatherers to domesticated farmers at the time people would store grains to last them those harsh winters and store seeds for the following years harvest in these large pits in the ground called cysts that seat is TS and cover them up these cysts were often lined with stones or wood or both think of these cysts as the first warehouses as it were then around 2,000 years ago in ancient China as the story goes instead of just storing foodstuffs some people began storing personal items in these large clay pots and then storing these large clay pots and paying someone else to store them in even larger inground cysts that were previously reserved for storing seeds and grains as I mentioned I enter in my opinion the birth of the world's first hoarders according to legend now the next milestone in self-storage lore takes place in the Roman Empire when presumably ancient Romans needed a place to store all the stuff that they stole from like all the other culture that they plundered and assimilated Rome is probably a pretty good bet for early self-storage invention as they also invented a lot of other things that are still used today like things like modern plumbing and sanitary management arches as you can see to build structures aqueducts to distribute water and even air conditioning then comes the story of the self storage industry in the 18th and 19th century in Britain legend has it that British merchants and voyagers when we there are before they were going on a voyage they would store their valuables at a bank while they sailed away looking for resources to exploit in like faraway lands after the banks filled up with these possessions their goods were then transferred to a warehouse that served as a storage unit until those voyagers returned from their trips to claim them in return for presumably some sort of a storage fee I don't know about you but that British Empire story sounds a bit more plausible than the ancient China or the ancient Rome stories that anyway after these three rumored origin stories self storage becomes largely an American story well documented well documented is the story of brothers Martin and John beacons the first self storage investors who in 1891 founded beacons company in Omaha Nebraska the company operated with three horse-drawn vans and twelve employees and in 1895 Martin beacon expanded the business to Los Angeles and started using moving vans in 1906 the beacons warehouse was built it's through it was the first reinforced steel and concrete building in the city and during the first half of the century the company set up a large number of fireproof warehouses throughout Southern California then after World War two is were beacons focused on four major areas of service in the moving industry local moving and store within communities long-distance moving of household items and other valuable goods third one was international moving and storage for military personnel and civilians and four was other related services such as storage of business records records management films film storage and office and industrial moving the beacons company pioneered the modern concept of containerized storage really then it wasn't until the swinging 60s that storage facilities really took off in the United States the first facility to use garage style doors was built in Odessa Texas in 1964 and was concisely named a one you store it you lock it you carry the key I wish I had a historical the picture of that one but unfortunately I don't but the building was created for the oil industry so that they could have quick access to tools and supplies soon after that the whole country followed suit and facilities began popping up all over these days the storage units are typically windowless and walled with corrugated metal and look quite quite modern really and their lockable by exclusively by the renter each unit is usually accessed by opening a rollup metal door five by ten unit is about the size of an large walk-in closet ten by ten is about the size of a child's bedroom ten by twenty is about the size of a one car garage 15 by 20 about the size of a large master bedroom and 20 by 20 about the size of a two-car garage now today at year end of 2019 there were about 52,000 self storage facilities in the United States alone situated on industrial and commercial land parcels there's more than one point nine billion square feet of available self storage space in the US alone it's an estimated 1,500 self storage facilities in the U hey 3000 in Canada and 1,100 in Australia and the industry is worth 38 billion dollars in in the US alone so there you have a brief unauthorized history of the self storage industry and now you have something to talk about other than work during your next zoom meeting you're welcome once again I
