In 1975 I was assigned to the 1/19th Infantry Battalion, 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks, HI. On weekends or other after duty times the forms were sent to the Battalion HQ where the NCO assigned as Charge-of-Quarters managed the sign-out process.One young Private reported to HQ to sign out but the CQ did not find his approved leave in the file. This was not entirely unusual and, as the CQ knew that a leave had been approved by the young man’s Unit Commander, he let him go saying they’d take care of the paperwork when he returned from leave. Tragically he died in an accident while on leave.As one of my regular tasks at Battalion included preparing the Duty Status Report, and as it was especially necessary in this case before the soldier’s family was notified of the death - and before they received Death Benefits - I noted his status as “Present for Duty to Approved Leave to Deceased” and sent this to the soldier’s Company Commander for his signature. While waiting for the form to be signed and returned I also began preparations for the letter that was going to be signed by the Battalion Commander and sent to his family.Instead of signing the form the Company Commander came to Battalion and informed me that this man did not have an approved leave because he did not sign out as required. He further told me that though the man had requested the leave he, as the CO, never approved it. Accordingly, he instructed me to change my status report to “Present for Duty to AWOL to Deceased” which would have resulted in the soldier’s family receiving nothing and being informed that their son was in violation of Army Regulations at the time of his death. I was totally shocked as I knew this was untrue, and I informed the Captain of that fact and that I refused to change my Report.In anger, the Captain ordered me to accompany him to the Battalion Commander’s office to answer for my “insubordination” and face whatever penalty the Colonel deemed appropriate. I did so and explained to the Colonel what had actually happened, that the man’s First Sergeant would verify that the Leave had in fact been approved by the Captain, and that the man’s name was still on the Company HQ’s Duty Status Board noting that he was on Leave, something the 1SG would not had done unless he had personally seen the approved form. The Colonel seemed to side with me and I was dismissed to continue preparing my report and the notification letter. At the same time the 1SG looked into the Company Commander’s waste basket - and found the leave form, signed by him, and then crumpled up and thrown out. He brought the form to Battalion and gave this to the Colonel. While he and I waited outside the office we could hear the Colonel speaking to the Captain in anger but, after a while, he came out of his office, looked at us, and then stated that while the form had in fact been approved the young man still violated regulations by leaving without signing out as required. I was then ordered - again - to change my report noting that this Private died while AWOL.Now I was the angry one and, although just a Junior NCO (3-striper at the time), I gave the Colonel a “one finger salute” and went back to my office and slammed the door, ignoring the Colonel’s order to stop.When the Colonel - and most of his Battalion Officers - came into my office I was ready for them, although I thought I could still end up in Leavenworth. Before the Colonel could say a word I laid out on my desk a stack of Leave Forms that, since I was responsible for Duty Status Reports, had been sent to me for filing. As I went through them I sorted out a number that had not been “properly” handled.“This form is for the Commander of Company C. He is currently on Leave but has not signed out as required by Regulations. I will prepare the AWOL Report on him, Sir. This one is for the First Sergeant of the Combat Support Company. He is currently on leave also but has not signed out. I will report him as AWOL, Sir, as required.” Altogether I found perhaps a dozen others that were technically AWOL to include one of the Colonel’s Staff Officers.The Colonel looked at me, realized how serious I was, and then turned to his officers and said, “How did you people let me get into this mess?” He then turned to me and said, “Sergeant Keith, prepare your report and the letter, noting that this young man was on approved leave at the time of his death.” I responded by saying, “Yes, Sir. Already done.” He then ordered the Captain to return to his office with him where, I expect, the Captain was reamed a new one.A few months later the Colonel - a Lieutenant Colonel actually - was promoted to Full Colonel and reassigned to Division HQ. When I had occasion to go to Division HQ I tried to avoid running into him as I still thought I was on the sh-t list with him but one day I did run into him and he told me to come into his office and close the door. This is what he said: “Sergeant Keith, although you might have handled that situation better, you were right and I was wrong. I apologize.”My respect for this man has never left me to this day.

This certainly brings back memories! Specifically college times - yes, those were the best. I remember one specific event from back then.  So this happened back in 2011, when I was in my 2nd year of college. It was semester exams. I was always an average student and I was (still am) super-lazy to boot. So as expected, I ended up staying awake till the wee hours of the morning. I did tell her that I might be sleeping late because I had plans to study. She even made sure I had a glass of hot milk before she went to bed. (Moms are awesome, seriously!) And I've a habit of doing stuff other than studying when I'm bored or just don't feel like it, no matter what the situation. She often screams my head off when she finds me watching a movie or playing games late at night. I always take great care to have a backup excuse, or to just shut off everything and sleep as soon as I hear her leave the bed. Yes, I was so used to her sneaking up on me that I had developed cat-ears! But that day, I was so engrossed in music that I didn't hear her leave her bed. (Parents sleep in the nearby room - I sleep in my own) By the time I heard her though, it was too late to switch off everything and go to sleep. It was already 4:00 AM by then, and I knew that she would be furious if she found out that I wasn't asleep yet.  So I improvised. I closed the browser, switched to the PDF file that was open and put on the instrumental song that was queued in Windows Media Player. I was lying on my bed belly down, so I pretended to sleep in that same position. With my eyes closed and my face halfway buried inside the pillow, it looked as if I actually was asleep. I remained completely still.  My door is always covered with curtains because the light from my room lights up the entire hallway. I could hear everything. She pulls the curtains aside, and comes inside my room. She sighs and murmurs to herself in my native language - "This idiot will never learn how to sleep properly. Where's the blanket? Must be here somewhere." She then pulls a blanket over me, making sure she doesn't wake me up in the process. She turns off the light and then murmurs again - "Hm, the laptop isn't shut off, I better close the lid." She does that, gives me peck on the cheek and goes back to her bed.  A few minutes after she leaves my room, I open one eye to make sure she's not around anymore and then proceed to actually doze-off. Wake up 5-6 hours afterwards - still in the same position. I actually woke up with aches all over my body, but that's besides the point.  To till date, my mom thinks that I had fallen asleep while studying. She even recites the whole incident to people/friends she has over for tea and snacks! Talk about pulling one over her, huh? As a side note, I still did manage to pass that semester exam with better than average marks. So that's good. :)

She’d gotten into some kind of shouting spat with him about something. It was early in September, so we couldn’t just ride out the rest of the year, and we all wanted to work it out.But the math teacher was extremely defensive and squirrelly, plus he just didn’t seem to know his subject or much of anything else. And he just seemed like this cold, bug-eyed fish-man. I was trying to imagine a middle schooler sitting down in front of him for his or her first day of class and thinking, “Uh…. how the fuck am I going to get through the school year with this… thing?” I couldn’t even be sympathetic or even pitying towards him because he’d already insulted my wife and my daughter was crying in her arms. (It turns out that she was crying because he was lying about who provoked the confrontation and she was just super frustrated about where things were going.) The principal was clearly at a loss and he looked over at me. He said he didn’t know what could be done; it would be a shame for my daughter to have to change schools over just one class. He looked at me and I looked back. The principal was one of these golf-playing shmoozers with a carefully-honed high-EQ; the teacher was the opposite — no empathic signature except deep, simmering, scary middle-aged white guy rage, the kind where you wouldn’t be surprised to hear that he hosed down his class this afternoon with an AR-15. So I couldn’t help but say, “How could you look across the desk and hire this guy???” The teacher looked like he’d been poked with a needle and the principal said, “OK, we’re done here.” And I walked out.My wife and daughter walked out a few minutes later, nothing having been resolved, even without my tactless presence to muddy things up.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~So far, somehow, my daughter just soldiers through his class and is getting good grades, but she won’t be happy ’til she’s left that school. He made decisions that were arbitrary, emotional and asinine. He showed very little business acumen; instead, what I saw was a con artist, repeatedly telling everybody how great he was. His hotels? The best. His products? The best. Him? The smartest businessman on earth. I’m reminded of the line from Game of Thrones: “Any man who must say, ‘I am the king’ is no true king,” and I think this applies 100% with Trump.It got worse when he publicly discussed President Obama’s birth certificate and citizenship. The racism on display was sickening, and the way he openly announced that his “experts” had proven the birth certificate(s) fake when they had no way to was just another con.During the campaign, I found myself growing to not just dislike him but to despise and hate the man. His insults and attacks against anybody who had the audacity to speak out against him? Attacking a disabled reporter? Ted Cruz’s wife? The parents of a dead soldier, not just insulting their patriotism but also insisting that the solder’s mother didn’t speak because of Trump’s racist beliefs about Muslims? I was done with him right then and there, and I no longer believed he was a harmless fool, but I realized he was a dangerous man, one who could bring about serious damage to the US.I don’t think I’m in the minority…I think many, many people have hated the man for a long, long time.
