this is mrs webbington and i am going to talk to you about one of my most favorite topics in social studies and that is north carolina industries so let's get started north carolina's top producing industry is agriculture agriculture is the growing of crops it is the raising of cattle livestock for food use and also aquaculture which we'll learn about in just a minute so agriculture north carolina is the top national producer of tobacco in the next few weeks or so i'm going to talk to you about the rise and fall of big tobacco i'm going to talk to you about how north carolina is once again a top producer of tobacco i'm going to talk to you about the tobacco's tobacco growers buyout that happened in the um mid to late 1990s and that kind of goes along with our textiles which is which used to be a major industry in north carolina however due to nafta which was the north american free trade agreement the textile industry was mostly decimated in north carolina however it is on the rebound as well and we'll also talk about how the golden leaf foundation had a lot to do with rebuilding these industries that will come after all of this none of the regrowth of the tobacco markets and the textile industry none of that will be on the quiz tomorrow i just need you to know what the top producing industries of north carolina are so not to get them ahead of myself because i could talk about the resurgence of textiles and tobacco for a good long while so moving along um north carolina is also the national top producer of sweet potato soybeans as well we're in the top five this for this year i'm not sure if we are actually number one or not but we are always in the top five producers of soybean corns um but we predominantly produce sweet potatoes tobacco where i am from that's the region the coastal plain region that is where coastal plain like nearing the piedmont sorry that is where you will see the most sweet potatoes and tobacco grown it's grown around here too but not to the extent is up there north carolina is also the second largest national producer of christmas trees specifically ash county which is in the mountains um here's some pictures of our of the christmas trees you'll see them growing up the mountain and the next time we're up there i plan on taking some videos and pictures and stuff like that for you because it's beautiful north carolina's top grossing crops are greenhouse and nursery crops and by that top grossing means top money making and basically these are just crops that are grown in a greenhouse or a nursery first and then um taken out of the greenhouse nursery and sold to various uh walmart uh like newborn farm and garden places like that garden shops um anywhere that you would go to buy your crops lows stuff like that the top 10 grossing crops in north carolina and year to year these may fluctuate and we may be first in one thing whereas we were second in that thing the year before but overall our top grossing crops are tobacco soybeans corn cotton sweet potatoes wheat peanuts blueberries potatoes tomatoes um for what it's worth blueberries are grown in the sand hills i mean you can grow them elsewhere but there's like a huge blueberry uh market in the sandhills livestock oh sorry livestock which is hogs poultry chicken and turkey cattle beef and dairy um you will see livestock all around especially as you get closer to the piedmont in the mountains you'll see lots of livestock in the mountains there's a lot of what they do up there dairy farming as well aquaculture which is um definitely specific to our area here in the tidewater sub-region of the coastal plains aquaculture culture is just the uh either farming like raising and um they have these really big like pools they're almost like vats where they grow where they raise fish so you can have it done at a farm or it can just be wild caught naturally like in the ocean or the river places like that and forestry getting back to the christmas trees and also logging that is a really important industry particularly particularly around here where you have international paper which used to be warehouser forestry is a big deal with that thank you baby sorry i had an m m delivery all right so aerospace and defense let's talk about that aerospace and defense as most of you are probably aware we have the third largest military population in the united states with um cherry point being right here in havelock um we also have hondajet utc aerospace system we used to have lockheed martin which is a company that builds the fighter jets and stuff like that however i think they moved to south carolina so where i didn't leave that one on the list and we're also known for the wright brothers first flight at kitty hawk um oh well we've got some storms coming sorry i got distracted excuse me and we are home to mcas cherry point camp lejeune mcas new river seymour johnson air force base in goldsboro and fort bragg in fayetteville tourism tourism is a huge industry in north carolina particularly where we live over here by the beach and also out in the mountains tourism makes up a large part of our economy so tourism provides over 200 000 north carolina jobs i think that number is more like 225 000 now um and here is my source i'll make that prettier later north carolina ranks sixth nationally in tourism profits so think about all the places that you could go in the united states and all that there is to offer we have so much to offer in north carolina that we are the sixth natural nationally ranked state with the highest tourism profits so we have the sixth highest tourism profits and the sub industries within tourism that are most are the most profit producing are food service lodging and there are other tourism sectors such as automotive transportation public transportation retail and recreation and sorry tourism by region coastal plain like i was saying we have our beaches we have fishing tournaments like big rock i'll say this is probably maybe not a well-known fact but we have such good fishing here that we have people that come in from other states by fishing license here just for the purpose of fishing our rivers and oceans and our area tourism in the piedmont we have professional sports such as the carolina hurricanes carolina panthers and are they the hornets again i'm sorry i don't follow basketball so sorry but whatever the basketball team is now i guess hornets and we also have we did have a major league soccer team and raleigh not a huge soccer fan so but i think it was there we also have the museum of art in raleigh state capital carowinds amusement park which is actually in charlotte actually carolyn's amusement park one of the cool things about that it splits the state line so there's a place in carowinds that you could like walk up and like you and your friend could be standing there and like your friend could be in south carolina and you'd be in north carolina so there's that tourism by region in the mountains beech mountain resort it's great for skiing appalachian trail which actually runs from georgia up to new york i think um no maine actually either way i've not walked the appalachian trail i don't know that i have it in me to do that but those people that do good for them they're doing something we also have the blue ridge parkway and biltmore estate in the mountains amongst many many many other things it's a really cool place to go and by sub-region i'm like really hitting hard on the tidewater and the sand hills um tourism is the most profitable industry within the su within the tidewater sub-region we have our beaches like outer banks crystal coast or fishing tournaments like big rock and then down here um in the sub-region of the sand hills it's known for golf and the u.s open was played in pinehurst in 2014 also in 1999 and 2005. so what i need you to do is take a screenshot to show me that you have watched this video
