Frequently asked questions
How do i add an electronic signature to a word document?
When a client enters information (such as a password) into the online form on , the information is encrypted so the client cannot see it. An authorized representative for the client, called a "Doe Representative," must enter the information into the "Signature" field to complete the signature.
How to sign pdf file with certificate?
I am working on the installation of a website which requires a valid SSL certificate. I need to have that certificate signed by a CA, because the server uses self-signed certificates for its certificates. I have done the following on my Windows machine:
Open Certificates MMC - right click on CA Certificate (or whatever). Select New Certificate Signing Request. Enter the hostname, the subject, the issuer, and the serial number on a separate line, then click Next. Enter the certificate store path, and click Next. Enter the name of the CA certificate in the Certificate store location of your choice, and click Next.
The certificate request window appears, and you may also configure the client computer to trust the signed request, by right clicking on a blank space in the request, and selecting Trust this certificate request from a list.
After the signing request is signed and sent to the certificate authority, you should see the signature on your server computer:
I need to do some research on the topic of signing files using certificates, so I created a simple Windows application which performs the same task, and sends the signed requests to a CA. It can be installed as a service, or even a DLL. You can run it with the command line arguments:
.\Certificate Signing -r "C:\Users\User\Documents\Certificate Signing " -s -n -e
The certificate signing request is sent to the CA with the subject, issuer, and serial number, and is signed using the CA's private key. The certif...
How do you do an electronic signature?
A-1-6-1-8-1-3-3.
That's right, it's a 3-digit signature, which means it looks like this:
3 2 1
The number of a signature is a secret, but it's generally used as a way to keep secret messages from prying eyes. A message would require at least 3 signatures in order to be sent to the recipient, so we have to make sure that at least one party is going to sign it.
A-2-1-10-1-4-1-3-1, so you can easily remember it:
A2A-2 A2A-2A A2A-2 A2A-2 B2A-2-1-B-2 A2A-2-1-A-B-B
What I like to call the A-0-10 system. It's not technically correct, because if you add "A-0" in between, it becomes A-1-0, but I'm sure it's just easier to remember.
And that's how we can sign a document that we want to send to the recipient using only our own signatures!
A-1-6-1-8-1-3-3, a-0-10-0-4-4-0-1-3-1 =
A-1-6-1-8-1-3-3 A-0-10-0-4-4-0-2-3-1
And that's it. We've sent the document and we're set!
Note: The system I'm using here doesn't use any secret information or secret passwords for sending and receiving email, only the signatures themselves. For more detailed explanations, check out our guide on using OTR to send and receive email using PGP.
