hi we're red riding hood i'm hannah and i'll be presenting alongside andrea today so the food pantry's current situation is that they have an opportunity to officially update the operations after this initial adaptation where they kind of had to scurry um because of the coveted outbreak and with food pantries the demand for the food doesn't just drop off in fact there's been a sharp increase in demand regular volunteers are at a higher risk of getting covered so food pantries are focusing on meeting this higher demand with these newer volunteers the factors and trends that influence pantries are on a larger scale macroeconomic forces during this whole pandemic e-commerce mobile apps and i.t are thriving industries in this time additionally a report published on siva found that one-fifth of indianapolis lives in a food desert as of november in 2019 some more specific forces to food pantries are that food banks receive most of their resources like both food and monetary through donors and specifically for food pantries there's been such an increase in demand in fact gleaners has seen and this april they've seen over a double increase in demand than they saw in the april of last year so now let's talk a little bit about gleaners some of the pains that they've experienced include the doubling of demand um recruiting and training new volunteers as well as pivoting to pre-packaged emergency bags removing the option of choice that customers usually would have so some gains that we wanted to try to create for them were to streamline their operations and pass out food more quickly so they can pass out even more nutritious meals all while protecting their volunteers and we wanted to back their motto that everyone deserves to live a hunger free life what they're currently doing because of this cova 19 pandemic and the enormous increase in food insecurity in indiana and across the country these food banks have experienced fewer volunteers compounded with this crazy growth in demand they have really needed to change their daily operations and food banks are currently facing multiple crises which severely impact their ability to meet their community's needs so what they're currently doing at gleaners is they've set up a drive-through process where they have asked cars to not idle for very long and just try to quickly go through the line and they have volunteers come out and deliver these pre-packaged bags of food and now andrea's going to talk about what they could be doing so to remedy the multiple crises that food banks are facing they must be able to adapt quickly and effectively to meet the increasing demand and new challenges posed by this new covenanting crisis and this could be accomplished by offloading as much logistical and other work as possible from the volunteers whose numbers have been reduced and also streamlining the process of food selection and delivery while also ensuring the highest standards of safety for both volunteers and customers this is where red riding hood comes in red riding hood is an app that's designed to help food banks and pantries respond efficiently and effectively to the chrome 19 crisis by streamlining the process of food selection and delivery and also by helping food banks reduce the logistical work required for them to remain in operation with the red riding hood app customers may select one of many predefined food bag types which also provides additional options for customers to choose a bag that they like or that fits their dietary restrictions and these bags are also dependent on availability at their preferred food pantry um they may also select a preferred pickup time and a date at their local food bank additionally volunteers have the option to view all existing orders in a single place and also to track existing orders and inventory all through the app which connects to a database backend that stores all necessary information in an easily accessible and scalable manner so some of the value that the app provides red riding hood is a phone app which allows updates to the software of the app as functionality is tested in the real world and as feedback is gathered from both customers and volunteers food banks the app relieves some of the pain and stress that is currently faced by food banks by streamlining the process from order to delivery um and it's also a low-cost software that allows volunteers to safely serve as many people as possible so a few more specifics the red riding hood app is currently available on android devices and will be soon available on the google play store for download the app uses a firebase firestore backend to store all data and to provide user authentication for the service the product is coded entirely in java and xml through android studio and it is based on the model view view model architecture or mvpm which separates the display database connectivity and business logic of the app this makes the app more scalable and maintainable in the long run all right so now we will switch over to a demonstration so this is the red riding hood app um the initial screen allows um for either a customer sign-in or a volunteer sign-in option so we're gonna go through the customer side first so on the customer sign-in customers have the option to sign in with either email or through a gmail account so i'm going to go ahead and sign in with email and i have an existing account so i'm just going to go ahead and sign in all right okay so this first page here um is food bank selection so as soon as a user logs in as a customer um they can select which food bank they want to pick up their food so i'm going to go ahead and select gleaners and you can see that the address pops up here as well which is very convenient for navigation cleaners and then the next page will let me choose a type of bag that i want so all of these bags are specific to each food bank each food bank can choose which types of bags they have available and put those bags in the backend database firebase so that customers can then select from them so all of these bag types are pulled down from that backend database so i'm going to go ahead and pick say nut free bag and you can see there's a description of the what the contents of the bag are down here i'm gonna go ahead and select that bag all right so then customers can select a date and time to pick up their bag and one important feature of this is that um based on the food bank you select um the date and time pickers will only allow customers to select dates and times when their selected food bank is open so for example uh the available days here as listed at the top are tuesday wednesday thursday and saturday so if i were to pick for example tuesday the 28th um that would be a valid pickup date but for example if i wanted to try pick up on monday then the app would um would not let me select that date because the food bank i chose which is gleaners is not open on that day i'm going to go ahead go ahead and select that um i'll go ahead and select pick up time all right so then we arrive at the confirmation page and this is where customers can confirm the details of their order before the full order details are stored in the database um so this is what i wanted i wanted to pick up at cleaners with a nut free bag and go ahead and confirm that okay so uh the final page is a window page which is um so essentially customers would display this page on their phone when they're going to actually pick up their bag um they would hold it in the window of their car the volunteers would be able to see the color and the name on their phone and then they would be able to get the correct type of bag all right so i'm going to go ahead and use this as a volunteer all right so as a volunteer um i'm going to select which food bank i'm volunteering with so i'll go ahead and select cleaners all right so on the volunteer side um it comes up with a list of active orders at that food bank it also lists their status what time they are going to be picked up and what type of bag and there's also the ability to sort bags based on different criteria so you can sort by date bag type name or progress and progress it just indicates whether it's been delivered whether the order has been made whether it's been not started yet things like that which would be helpful in terms of preparing bags in time so i'll go ahead and try sorting by date and that's just going to sort by the pickup date so that is all for the app demo and i'll hand it back over to hannah so now that we've seen the technical side probably thinking okay how is this business going to plan out so we have a target customer segment of food pantries in the indianapolis area but more specifically we're targeting gleaners um this is because glutenous has their own food pantry but they're also partnered with several different food pantries around the indianapolis and indiana areas and so one of our key partners is going to be gleaners and they're going to help with our key activities such as marketing and sales because they'll be helping with word-of-mouth marketing and connecting or recommending food pantries to connect with our sales team which will help them complete the sale and get set up with the system additionally after that process is completed team that is going to be there to help with any other issues that may come up after the setup process and so some resources that we're going to need would be just the human capital for the system set setup and support so now how are we going to be making money with this app we are intentionally implementing a low-cost business model so that we can keep this usage fee low because we want to have a high accessibility for all food pantries in the city and state so we're gonna have an annual usage fee with a 30-day free trial and we've implemented the free trial because we believe that even if the pandemic is solved within the next 30 days this app still provides value past the pandemic this is just a great time to be implementing an app like this so for this annual usage fee these food pantries can request funds to cover this cost from many different funds that exist but one that we recommend is united way's technology fund which has been created specifically to help non-profits implement technology and their own businesses for advanced growth so why now why implement this app at this time exactly and the answer is just because food pantries have already experienced this initial shakeup um with adapting to the pandemic and changing the new processes and training new volunteers and now is a good time for this app to come in and help them show and help show them how they can efficiently um be serving more and more people and satisfy this increasing demand and so now is a good time for them to adopt this app and solidify these new processes with an increased deficiency and so if they can be serving more people my question would be why wait to meet this increased demand of those who need food right now thank you for your time
