rainwater that falls to the ground infiltrates the ground or evaporates however industrial activities can alter natural drainage patterns and add pollutants to rainwater and snowmelt the introduction of pollutants to stormwater most commonly occurs when industrial facilities allow operating procedures and industrial materials to become exposed to stormwater this potentially contaminated stormwater may then enter our lakes rivers streams and wetlands the best way to address this issue is through pollution prevention measures that focus on preventing the contamination of stormwater at the source which is more cost-effective and environmentally beneficial this pollution prevention concept has led to the development of the current stormwater regulations and the overall goal of the program which is to reduce the pollution entering the surface waters of michigan by implementing best management practices designed to prevent the contamination of stormwater runoff a key term to understand when considering pollution prevention measures is first flush so what does it mean well most automobile drivers are aware that roads are slick as after the first few minutes of a rainstorm it is in those first few minutes that oil grease and other pollutants that have accumulated on the pavement are picked up by water and transported to storm sewers or roadside ditches this washing action by paints use oils and solvents all can have toxic effects on aquatic life and may contaminate drinking water supplies some toxic subsys can accumulate in the food chain resulting in fish advisories and limiting the amount and type of fish we can safely eat now the following activities are sources of organic pollutants food processing composting operations failing septic systems animal waste airplane especially in areas of shallow and slow moving waters nutrients are a typical pollutant associated with stormwater runoff the addition of phosphorous to stormwater runoff from landfills sediments septic field sewage animal wastes illicit connections and over fertilization result in algal blooms and excessive plant growth the presence of pathogens and surface water can cause ear and/or intestinal problems as a result of contact which inhibits recreational uses common sources of pathogens are illicit connections sanitary sewer overflows animal waste and failing septic systems
