village preserved by the state New Jersey was on the moon but a growing land needed better transportation in 1786 John Fitch a Trenton gunsmith sailed America's first steamboat between Burlington and Philadelphia in the 1830s two important barge canals were built the Morris Canal climbed from Jersey City to Lake apat Cong 924 feet above sea level then descended toward the coal fields of Pennsylvania to the south the Delaware and Raritan canal connected Bordentown Trenton and New Brunswick a mural in Wharton Town Hall shows how Morris canal barges were lifted over the mountains by a
