hello i'm dr beth b associate professor and director of undergraduate studies at ecu's department of geography planning and environment today i'd like to talk a little bit about what geography is and what it has to offer some of our more interested and motivated students many of our students have never taken a geography class and a lot of people in our communities don't really know what contemporary geography is we see it as the study of the interaction of all physical and human phenomena at individual places and how interactions among places form patterns in organized space in other words geography is more about just memorizing names and locations of places and features of the earth it's really about understanding how the human and physical aspects of our world interact with and influence each other so geography is diverse and it's an interdisciplinary field which allows students to combine their interests in multiple things for example geographers study and work in areas relevant to managing the impact and recovery of disasters like hurricane maria and puerto rico this may involve planning more sustainable communities that are resilient to environmental hazards forecasting and tracking those hazards understanding more explicitly how they develop so that we can better prepare developing sound environmental conservation practices to protect the natural resources that aid us in our recovery and last but not least addressing social justice issues that create both sustainable and equitable solutions for all of us and of course many of us also use geographic information science and technologies to capture represent process and analyze the geographic information that we're able to capture to be able to visualize also some of the issues that we are studying in the department we have several undergraduate degrees and several options to choose from of course we have the bachelors of science and geography which include the possibility to concentrate on either geographic and environmental systems if you're interested in utilizing and developing your skills in geographic information science technologies and also focusing a little bit more on the physical world we also have a concentration in global environment and development if you're perhaps more interested in social issues but how social issues and environmental issues interact and you're interested in perhaps working or traveling doing research abroad we also have a bachelor's of science in applied atmospheric science many of our students go on to master's degrees in media meteorology or they end up in careers in the meteorological sciences atmospheric sciences we have a bachelor's of science of course in geographic information science and technology or gist last but not least we also offer a bachelor of science in community and regional planning with of course several minors we can always minor in atmospheric science geography and we have a certificate in geographic information science and technology as well as environmental planning environmental and community planning our students are involved in hands-on activities both inside and outside the classroom many of our students have been able to travel with us as we've done research both with around north carolina the united states and also abroad for example kaylee adams traveled with us to do some historical and terrestrial laser scanning digital mapping in petra jordan we also have important alumni within our own community so bianca schonemann for example is the current ceo of uptown greenville and is leading the charge to develop a more sustainable and vibrant downtown community kelsey mulder for example took a position to work in london in the uk with risk management solutions this particular agency works on issues of insurance and assessing risk management around issues of natural hazards and of course many of our atmospheric scientist students take internships and later on also become part of television and also radio and online weather stations and organizations such as megan lindsey who was previously employed at wnct-9 here in greenville and jessalyn france at wect 6 in wilmington north carolina several of our students have also been highlighted for their academic endeavors across the campus as their private profiles reflect last but not least here just a sampling of a few the interesting places that our students have gone on to seek gainful employment thanks so much for watching this video and please don't hesitate to reach out again i'm dr beth b associate professor and director of undergraduate studies and i would love to hear from you shoot me an email or feel free to call my office thank you
