[Music] the majority of interpreters in the United States are freelance interpreters that work for agencies and clients as independent contractors now there are several distinctions that differentiate in an independent contractor with an employee but the one we're addressing today is that independent contractors are free at their discretion to accept or decline assignments from their agencies or customers very quickly in this video we are going to address four reasons why you would want to decline an assignment and frankly why your agency would want you to decline an assignment the first consideration is your time constraints don't accept an assignment if you cannot dedicate the proper amount of time needed for example you may have a 4:00 p.m. appointment or obligation don't accept a doctor's visit at 3:00 p.m. even if you think the doctor's visit will be very short maybe 30 minutes it's not worth the risk accepting assignments close together may result in shortchanging one client or arriving late for another make sure to communicate with your agency about your time constraints and decline any appointments that may have the risk of conflicting the second reason you may want to decline an assignment is due to skill level you may be a great consecutive interpreter but when it comes to simultaneous conference interpreting you may need to decline if the assignment is one that you know you can't do well then don't accept it it may be tempting to take an assignment for the money even though it's over your head however in doing so you could damage your reputation as an interpreter and actually hurt your chances for future work the next reason you may want to decline an assignment is for a moral or religious reason first of all if you take an assignment that you have a fundamental moral objection to then you are setting yourself up to be tempted to deviate from the transparent interpreter role you may even be tempted to compromise your word choice while interpreting second you shouldn't have to compromise your convictions engage your freedom to choose assignments that don't violate your core beliefs the last reason that you should decline an assignment would be because of a conflict of interest if you know the client on a personal level or you have interpreted for them in a different setting it may be best to decline the assignment at the very least you should discuss any potential conflict of interest with your agency or customer and decide together what the best course of action would be ultimately you want to say yes to as many appointments as possible so that your agency and customer will want to continue giving you priority when jobs come available however as mentioned in this video there are times you should decline being transparent about the reason you're declining is not necessary but can be helpful for your agency to understand where you're coming from in fact demonstrating the professionalism it takes...
