Can a power of attorney be digitallly signed?
can a power of attorney be digitallly signed? The unhelpful but realistic answer is it depends on your country.Brazil and Indonesia are countries that allow, and there must be more. But if you ask any lawyer, chances are you’ll be told to physically sign it instead. And that is why the UK has shelved its plans for digital/electronic powers of attorney in 2014 (see “Digital plan for powers of attorney shelved,” The Law Society Gazette, 21 Aug 2014).So the UK isn’t one that you could digitally sign a POA (at least probably not from a legally valid angle).(The rest of the answer is just for interest.)The leading advantageWe are living in th... -
Given that a direct correlation has been found between being hard of hearing and developing Alzheimer’s dementia, will wearing hearing aids reduce or eliminate that relationship?
This is an excellent question. I wrote about this issue in a book of mine (about hearing loss - “I See What You’re Saying”) but the research documents this relationship in numerous places. I never thought much about it (I’m 63 yrs old) until I had to put my brother in an assisted-living facility several years ago because he had dementia. Although his hearing is ok (mine isn’t), I began to wonder about the potential causes of dementia because I did not want to turn out like my brother. I’ve changed my diet, get plenty of sleep, take certain supplements, etc., but I was blown away by the research that had been done to support the claim that untreated hearing loss was also a culprit that could lead to dementia.I’ve cut-and-pasted an edited section from my previous research:“Several major studies in recent years have shown a stronger connection between adults with hearing loss and dementia / Alzheimer’s Disease compared to adults with normal hearing. The risk increases as the person’s hearing gets worse. Those with mild hearing impairment are nearly twice as likely to develop dementia compared to those with normal hearing. The risk increases three-fold for those with moderate hearing loss, and five-fold for those with severe impairment.Frank Lin, M.D., Ph.D., an Otologist and Epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, is the author (with the help of several esteemed colleagues) of several recent studies pointing to a link between hearing loss and cognitive problems ranging from mild impairment to dementia. One of the most frequently referenced studies connecting hearing loss and cognitive impairment is called “Hearing Loss and Incident Dementia”.Lin and his colleagues found accelerated rates of brain atrophy in people with impaired hearing compared with those who had normal hearing. They also linked hearing loss to "deep episodes of stress, depression, or bad mood," an increased risk of hospitalization, and an increase in the risk of falls. The link between hearing loss and dementia is supported by other researchers. Dr. Richard Gurgel, Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at University of Utah Health Care, studied more than 4,400 men and women 65 and older. Those with hearing loss at the beginning of the study (published in 2014) developed dementia at a higher rate and earlier than those without hearing loss.Dr. Gurgel has reviewed and praised Dr. Lin’s efforts. "His research has been fantastic," Gurgel said of Lin's work. "It's energized our field and brought this issue to the forefront. He's been a real pioneer in this area."Gurgel, Lin, and others are now focused on finding out whether hearing loss causes dementia or is related to dementia. "Dementia has so many causes. I think hearing loss could be a very important component, but there are certainly a lot of factors that play into dementia," Gurgel said.Others compliment Dr. Lin’s work. "Those data (from Lin's studies) are very, very solid," said Dr. Arthur Wingfield, Professor of Neuroscience at Brandeis University. That structures responsible for sound and speech are affected in those with hearing loss wasn't a surprise, says Lin - shrinkage in those areas might simply be a consequence of an "impoverished" auditory cortex, which could become atrophied from lack of stimulation. However, he adds, these structures don't work in isolation, and their responsibilities don't end at sorting out sounds and language. The middle and inferior temporal gyri, for example, also play roles in memory and sensory integration and have been shown to be involved in the early stages of mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease.A recent study, led by Isabelle Mosnier of Assistance Publique-Hopitaux de Paris in France, offers more hope. Mosnier studied a group of 94 people ages 65 to 85 with profound deafness in at least one ear. Each received a cochlear implant followed by twice-weekly auditory rehabilitation. More than 80 percent of those with the lowest cognitive scores showed airSlate SignNow improvement one year after implantation, according to the study published in the journal JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery. The implications of the study have global relevance: “Our study demonstrated that hearing rehabilitation using cochlear implants in the elderly is associated with improvements in impaired cognitive function,” Mosnier wrote.P. Murali Doraiswamy, M.D., a Professor of Psychiatry and Medicine at Duke University School of Medicine and coauthor of “The Alzheimer's Action Plan”, says that although the study had some shortcomings, "the improvement in cognition was huge — about double that seen with any of the current U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) drugs for treating Alzheimer's" . He adds that the findings about hearing loss affecting cognitive tests probably also apply to other senses such as vision, smell, and touch. "Studies have shown that uncorrected vision problems raise the risk for dementia," he says.Brandeis University Professor of Neuroscience, Dr. Arthur Wingfield, has been studying cognitive aging and the relationship between memory and hearing acuity. He says unaddressed hearing loss not only affects the listener’s ability to “hear” the sound accurately, but it also affects higher-level cognitive function. Specifically, it interferes with the listener’s ability to accurately process the auditory information and make sense of it.An August 31, 2011, news release by the Penn Medicine News addressed a study by researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. The study revealed that declines in hearing ability may accelerate gray matter atrophy in auditory areas of the brain and increase the listening effort necessary for older adults to successfully comprehend speech.Studies by M. Kathleen Pichora-Fuller, a Psychologist from the University of Toronto, conducted research to test the hypothesis that treating hearing loss in those with dementia will help to optimize communication. "I have no doubt that if a CI [cochlear implant] makes it easier for a person to listen, then they will be able to spend more of their power to do other cognitively demanding tasks."Now, the summary :Three Ways Hearing Loss Leads to Dementia1 Cognitive LoadThe first theory is cognitive load. This is the result of the brain constantly coping with poor and degraded sounds due to poor hearing, forcing the brain to constantly struggle to process those sounds. The brain tires from the strain of trying to comprehend these sounds, depleting the brain’s energy in other activities such as memory and thinking.2 Brain AtrophyThe second theory involves brain atrophy. Hearing impairment may directly contribute to accelerated rates of atrophy in parts of the brain that process sound. Hearing loss causes the brain to lose part of its density in the auditory section.3. Social IsolationThe third theory is social isolation. People who have a hard time hearing often withdraw from social contact because it's so difficult to communicate with others. Numerous studies have found that a loss of engagement and loneliness are risk factors for cognitive decline.People tend to become isolated from others when they have an unaddressed HOH problem. Social isolation has long been recognized as a risk factor for cognitive decline and dementia.Again, excellent question - it only took me 63 years to think of the same question…. -

Q. What are the features of hepatic amyloidosis on abdominal ultrasound test?A. TL:DR. Ultrasound findings of liver involvement in amyloidosis tend to be non-specific, including hepatomegaly with diffuse decreased and coarse heterogeneous echogenicity and a reported characteristic hepatic contour (asymmetric and triangular hepatomegaly with the apex at the falciform ligament), a result of mild atrophic change of lateral border of both hepatic lobes, in spite of hepatic enlargement. More recently reported is stiffness median value of 99.1 kPa (range 25.7–188.9 kPa) signNowly higher than ...

Frequently asked questions
How do I add an electronic signature to a Word document?
You can add electronic signatures to a Word document using the Drawing tool. According to US law, every eSignature you add in Word is recognized as an official electronic signature. Still, this method won't be suitable for many industries that include sensitive data or complex signature workflows. To keep your documents secure and avoid possible problems, consider uploading a Word document for signing to airSlate SignNow and use its tools for a much more secure and trustworthy signing experience.
What is an electronic and digital signature?
To understand the difference between a signature stamp and electronic signature, let’s consider what electronic signatures and signature stamps are. An electronic signature is a digital analogy to a handwritten signature, while a signature stamp is created using a method called hashing to formulate a unique private and public key. Both are legally binding. However, electronic signatures are much more convenient from an ease-of-use point of view because signature stamps require several keys and a digital certification for each signature (e-stamp) applied.
