greetings I'd like to spend a few minutes here talking about crime scenes in in serial murder cases and in on sexual violent cases as well basically your author points out that we will find crime scene signatures which your author defines as a unique and integral part of an offender's behavior that exceeds the actions needed to commit the offense so here we see basically what would be considered to be part of the offender's fantasies and scripts related to those fantasies and desires now remember the mode of operation basically would be the techniques that are needed to carry out the crime that are often learned from others or from reading and watching movies and I would like and these may change over time while the signatures or as I mentioned the behaviors are actions beyond those needed to commit the crime often have some consistency and may even have kind of a compulsion basis in that regard and your author points out that there are various types of signatures ah that may include for example verbalizations and we may find this in written statements by the offender or in recordings by the offender or reports by victims who were not killed by the offender and we'll also see this something that we see emerging now our statements made on the social media environment postings on facebook on youtube on on tumblr work on Twitter and the like so we begin to see some of those as well we may see sexual signatures for example opposing the victim in particularly sexually suggestive ways or inserting objects into their genitals or cutting their their genitals we may also see the the physical which would include torture and bondage and other methods of going beyond the killing that are primarily due to fuel the offenders fantasies and then psychological for example creating a great amount of fear in the victim and the offender trying to show that they're in control and have a great deal of of power some of the signature behaviors that have been found in serial murder investigations are for example a bizarre sexual behaviors attacking and destroying the face of the victim the way that the body is disposed of sometimes we see cannibalism or we see dismemberment of body parts or mutilation sometimes they're situations where offenders engage in necrophilia or they engage in sexual acts with the corpse we may also see that they get aroused by multiple stabbings of the victim we may see the use of trophies or restraints souvenirs that sometimes body parts are missing we different we've seen cases where I nipples are cut off or fingers are cut off or eyes are removed we may also see that the offender eeks photographs we may find that later and of course there is some you know excellent evidence in a trial if you have you know photographs or videos but also they may take clothing or jewelry or other items of that they may use in their fantasies where they recreate and and re fantasize about the murder so these are important features to take into consideration and it's also very important to differentiate when you have signature behaviors from Sarah murdering where you have behaviors that would not indicate serial murder or some type of violent crime there can be confusion in many respects regarding this you know for example if someone removes the fingers we might say well maybe they have some very deviant sexual fantasy about removing fingers or having those fingers for some type of sexual act others might say that they remove the fingers to on remove any chance of conducting fingerprint analysis and so again we want to take a close look at the signature behaviors but then try to I'll go back to see how the mode of operation the signatures the motivation the fantasy the entire script how we put that together and try to recreate how that offender put that script together in their own head and in their actions uh we don't get into the head of the offender no we don't we don't do that but what we do is we try to understand how the offender creates those scripts and then acts out on them and this wraps up this video thank you
