employee Awards pyramid how and why to develop a tiered award structure with Mike Byam Mike is the author behind the book the Wow workplace and managing partner of the Terry berry company Terry berry is an organization that develops employee recognition programs for more than 25 thousand employers worldwide Mike what is the best way for businesses to appropriately reward and recognize the good better and best accomplishments of their employees well that's a great question Jenny and a terry berry the best practice that we use when it comes to employee awards for going above and beyond or peer to peer recognition is to take advantage of the tiered award strategy and we recommend approaching award levels in a pyramid structure and in this example on the screen at the base of the pyramid is the high five award an employee in the organization can give a high-five to any other employee there's no limit to the number of high-fives that can be given there's no management approval or review that's needed or required for this process and so you know it's pretty instantaneous the other aspect of that is there's no monetary cost or tangible award associated with this base level we use the term high-five but you can call it whatever you want and so what's the value of the high five award it's that it's allowing any co-worker to post their praise for an individual and for others to see and the largest percentage of your employee nominations are gonna fall into this category now as we slide up the pyramid the next tier in this example is how we're gonna call the WoW award and this award comes from a peer nomination but it requires a manager's review in order to bump into this nomination class and what you'll find is twenty twenty-five percent of all the nominations is what we're gonna shoot for buying this this level now a tangible award is going to be given to the individuals who are the WoW Award recipients so you can see it's a little bit higher level than the high five now the top tier in this structure is a real exclusive award and in this example we're going to call it the ACE award the company's leadership is going to select five to ten percent of all the nominations to receive this level again a tangible award is given the value of that tangible award is higher than the level at the Wow of the wild level and this is really this is the pinnacle that's the best of the best and this type of award structure allows for a couple different things since there's no management or processing associated with a base level recognition and feedback to the recipient happens instantaneous it's transparent and that immediate positive feedback aspect to the program is really key in developing and maintaining the ongoing culture recognition in your business now the higher level Awards allow for leadership to give an extra level of support reinforcement and kudos to those higher level contributions now keeping the best of the best in your organization engaged and then modeling those behaviors to others in the businesses is a real important step an important aspect of how you want to set this structure up like what's the best way to keep awards exciting for an employee who might be recognized multiple times within the program well great question and what we recommended Terry berry is implementing a different award methodology for each of the different award categories and this reinforces that differentiation between achievement levels it keeps the program exciting to employees as they move through the different levels of the program as they achieve higher levels and so what we've listed here are some of the popular award methodologies that people are using in today's business world for these different types of achievements an maybe in the fall it's a stadium kit or something of that nature and this helps keep the program fresh and exciting for recipients who are earning multiple awards over time because at the end of the day we want to have people qualified more than once you don't want to be a one-time Wow Award recipient you want to be a multiple time winner and when we talk about the best of the best let's look at the highest award level and that we're gonna designate that differently as well we're gonna use a signature award that's it exclusive to that level of achievement and that's going to be something special something symbolic something that incorporates that achievement into into the award some way shape or form and it's going to be memorable for that employee and others who see what they've
