A full competitive analysis (feature by feature comparison, pricing, SWOT analysis, etc) does take time - and frankly, will get you lost in the trees before you see the forest at the product concept phase.I recommend starting with a high level analysis on each company's primary positioning, target customer, and core value proposition. Make a list of the top players in the market, and spend half-a-day reading as much as you can about them. As you do that, try to figure out a framework for what the industry competes on. I tend to think visually, so I develop a few axes on which I can chart the competitive offering (price, design, target customer, style, brand, utility, platform, etc). The actual axes vary greatly by industry, so it's up to you to figure out the right ones. Sometimes a market is simple enough to chart on an XY graph, but more often you'll need a small spreadsheet to track your findings. In most industries, you'll start to see patterns and clusters pretty quickly.  The most interesting part of the process, IMO, is finding the new opportunity in the space. You'll rarely find a glaring hole in the market within the existing competitive matrix, since the established players will have taken advantage of the opening if there was actually a market opportunity there. The best new entrants flip the model and start competing on an entirely new axis or value proposition that's not part of the existing market. There is plenty of great literature on the subject. A few of my favorite books include Blue Ocean Strategy, Innovator's Dilemma, and Youngme Moon's Different.

It depends on the state, and I’m not an expert - but I wanted to share my personal experience for a couple reasons.It may surprise some people - especially non-gun ownersI feel it illustrates that gun control and gun laws are two different things and before jumping to the conclusion that we need more (or fewer) laws pertaining to guns, everyone should take a few minutes to educate themselves and use common sense (gasp)This is my first time gun buying experience from about 4–5 years ago.I’d done quite a bit of research online, pretty much settled on what I wanted and decided it was time to walk into a gun store to look and make the final decision in person. After about 15 minutes I’d settled on a gen 4 Glock 19. The store was running a special on the gen 4s and I received a free box of ammunition, as well as an extra magazine. Awesome.Next up it was time to go through the background check and pay. I had to wait, because there was an older guy and his son in front of me. He was purchasing the gun for his son (because he wasn’t 21) - apparently his son was joining a junior police academy and needed a handgun. Well, his background check came back - he had some kind of domestic abuse charge - no gun for you, no gun for your son. The owner of the gun shop chastised him for even wasting her time since he clearly knew that was on his record.My turn. They ran my details, everything came back clean and it was time to pay. Something people may not realize is that guns aren’t cheap. Mine was close to $500. That’s a decent chunk of change and puts them out of many people’s signNow economically. Of course, I’d imagine criminals acquire weapons for much less - but then again they don’t go through the proper channels.Great, background check cleared, I’ve paid and ready to go. The guy behind the counter bags things up and hands it to me - then the owner starts berating him. Apparently by putting the newly purchased gun (still in the case) and the box of ammunition, into the same bag they were setting me up to get a felony when I walked out of the store. They also gave me specific instructions about putting the gun and/or ammo in the trunk of my car - NOT the passenger compartment. Again, throwing the now two separate shopping bags into my back seat would have potentially been criminal (felony).This is where things get crazy. In Ohio, you can load up a gun - put it in a holster (on the outside of your clothes) and walk around in most public places. But, as soon as you cover up the gun - or get into a car with it - you’re breaking the law (felony) unless you’ve gotten a special license/permit. This requires more background checks, fingerprinting, attending a class, paying more money, etc.Now, let’s say you’re all about following the letter of the law and you go through all of these steps so that you can carry your gun in your car. Things don’t get easier - because each state can be different. Despite having a permit, passing the background checks, etc - if you happen to drive into Chicago you could be in a lot of trouble. Apparently, you can drive right through with no problems, but if you step foot outside of your car (even to get gas, even if you leave the gun in the car) you’re now in a world of trouble (felony). It makes you wonder why Chicago has so much gun violence when the gun laws there are so strict.The laws are very strict for gun owners, they can be very confusing, and it seems, by definition, only followed by law abiding citizens.

I’m a young person, at least for a few more years. I am 28 years old, and I’ve noticed that my peers and those younger than me are, generally, terrified of the phone. By my senior year, I knew I wanted to work.But what job can the peace and justice warrior of the Liberal Arts School expect in the 2011 job market?My now-husband was a real estate minor and member of the Real Estate Society at Villanova. One of his professors at the time made attending a networking event required, along with collecting 3 business cards and reporting back about the conversations had.The event was on campus. Most students were seniors with no jobs lined up. It was a networking event composed entirely of local real estate developers, commercial real estate brokers and the like. Could it be any more attractive?Imagine this: Most students did not attend. Those that did clustered into the corner and talked to each other. It wasn’t required for me, but I needed a job. I spent all Saturday last week applying, and I haven’t heard back from anyone.”*Thinks to myself, ‘what’s the definition of insanity again?’*I still own that cheap skirt suit. Since I’ve changed jobs, I wear a suit rarely. But it’s probably time to retire this puppy. I’m not sure $100 suit sets from Banana Republic are supposed to last you 7 years. Maybe I’ll own it for long enough that it goes out of and comes back into fashion.

A home is the most expensive thing most people will buy in their entire lives. Most people pay between 2 and 10 times their annual income for a home and spend most of their working lives paying down the mortgage. Saving the down payment for your first home is difficult. For most it requires living well below their means while they save up between 5% and 25% of the purchase price of a home as a down payment.Take a look at your current annual income. Then look at the prices for modest homes in your area. You might not be able to afford a house on a lot. You might have to settle for a small apartment. If you can’t find anything for 10 times your annual income or less, you aren’t going to be able to afford to buy a home, even If you could save up a down payment. Your only solution will be to increase your annual income.Maybe your best use of any savings you can scrape together might be more education and training that will allow you to qualify for a better paying job. If you are stuck in a low wage rut, you need to make breaking out of that your first priority. Let saving for a home come later, after you have established a better career.
