What respect are you referring to?My career stretched from the end of Vietnam to the mid 90s and during the bulk of that time, I was aware of damn little respect for the military.That was ok.  We weren't in it for the respect.But everyone 'knew' that Military service was a refuge for the kids not smart enough for college and not motivated enough for a 'real job'.  Whenever I traveled in uniform I had older vets from WWII telling me all about how the modern service was soft compared to their day, and that none of us would have lasted in 'their' Navy/Army/Corps.Those older gentlemen tended to get upset with me when I asked if they volunteered or if they were drafted...Towns around bases were full of used car lots that advertised that they financed 'E-1 and up' at predatory rates and this was ok by laws passed expressly enable them to do so by the state legislatures.  People would build their new homes near airbases and complain about the jet noise.But, again, that was all ok.  We weren't in it for the respect.Then 9/11 happened.  Suddenly everyone loves the military.Oh, the car lots still finance 'E-1 and up' at predatory rates, but major chains offer 'Military discounts' and advertise to make sure everyone knows about it.  People recite 'thank you for your service' to any vet they meet, sort of like a sales clerk will suggest that you have a nice day.The VA is still underfunded.  Veteran's programs are still used as political footballs.  Politicians (who oddly, never served) will announce that some veteran program is 'too expensive' and that the nation 'cannot afford it' while voting for (and demanding) yet another war.  And our troops are still deployed in warzones for another Thanksgiving, while the bulk of our population won't give them a single thought...What 'respect' were you referring to again?

“8.30am - 5.15pm are the timings” is what the Vice President told me before I joined.I was to work in Mumbai. Since the weekends were off, I could come to my home-town which was just 4 hours away by train, to spend the Saturdays and Sundays with my family.The first day of the job, they handed me 10 Case Studies —deals they had previously closed—to read and understand the work flow.My colleague said “the first month's going to be a honeymoon period” for me since I was a fresher. All I had to do was read the case studies and just get a hang of things. “Chill for the month, bro”.The Vice President came in at around 4pm and gave me all the documents he had just received from a prospective client. He asked me to scrutinize them and chalk out pointers that would be either in favour or against closing the deal. (He gave me two days to finish the work).The second day, sometime around 3pm the Chairman called me to his cabin and handed over a client's annual reports to prepare a Financial Model on a fresh deal whose mandate had just come in. He wanted it before I left. (A Financial Model takes 3 days to fully build, fyi)The next day, the AVP, my immediate boss, wanted me to get myself hands-on with the deal she was working on which was nearing closure. She had two other deals in the pipeline and wanted me to start reading about them too.So…I never came home any of the weekends (but once, when I had to sit for an exam).I never went to my flat at 5.15pm. Ever.The minimum time recorded on my timesheet was 11 hours. ( The support staff had to rush home early that day so I had to checkout too).I spent most Fridays and Saturdays working well into the next morning. (Sometimes even till 3am. All because deadlines were tight. Besides, Sunday would follow and I could grab some sleep then).I lost around 3.5 kilos in 45 days. (I'm 5′10, lean and weighed 73.5kgs when I joined).Some more things happened too:I finished reading all the 10 Case Studies the very first day.I completed the framework of the model by 8pm that second day, and asked permission to fill in the Data by the following noon.I scrutinized all the legal documents of that prospective client and came up with 3 very crucial pointers that would go completely against the deal.I got so adept at making models, it took me less than 5 hours to finish it. From scratch.The Chairman, 20 days into my joining, took me to a client meet to record the MoMs. (For the first time in my life I saw what HNI meets are like). I developed an MoM that became the standard format, next day onwards.A month into the job, I got my own private International phone line. (From backend I had moved into the mid-end now. I was suppose to start personally interacting with clients for follow-up data retrieval).35 days in, I made a suggestion which was incorporated into the deal that improved proposal approval to almost surety and was also critically acclaimed before the entire office in the Monthly Review.45 days into the job, I was advicing a client on the structuring of his provisional statements to better suit the proposal.50 days into the job, I spent an entire day at the lender's, handling a RAM rating model.60 days into it, I submitted my resignation. (My Final Year Undergraduate Exams and Charter final dates came in).When I applied, I was in my 2nd year of UG. I got rejected straight away. I reapplied in the same Investment Bank 6 months later. I was in my Final Year now. I was applying for an internship; a Trainee title. I got rejected (again but this time) because the Bank decided against offering a higher stipend than the one they paid to other interns, disregarding the fact that I had to relocate. A month later, the VP impressed by my “aggressive attitude” during the interview showed some pity and offered to give me a model to prepare in exchange for a certification that would help me get an internship at any damn IB I applied to because it would have their attestation. (This IB is indeed extremely respected in the industry). He briefed for 15 mins and gave me a 48 hour deadline to submit it. It was 4pm, I immediately slept for 4 hours, woke up at 8pm and went all hell-loose on MS Excel. 20 hours of punching the keyboard later, I sat back, scrolling through what I had just created. I hit the send button and went to sleep. A week later, I got a call from the VP offering the role of a full-time Analyst with a 67% hike in stipend. When I joined, the first thing my colleague asked me was if I would teach her to make such models. I asked her how she knew about the model. She said, “oh the entire office does!” I don't want to sound boastful, but it was indeed a work of art.The two months I worked as an Investment Banking Analyst, I too could have asked the same question on the hours to clock, but I chose to bust my ass, instead. Never once did I complain about working longer hours, not being paid overtime, not being able to go home on the weekends, not getting enough sleep. Every single moment while I was there, I chose to slog it out harder than ever.There's something very important I've learnt about life: it is indeed a rat race. And as long as it is, I want to be the fastest one around.

In California, it is “actionable” to be required to do that on your _own_ time.In short, if a company requires work that’s unpaid and you’re not on salary (are an hourly employee, but not being paid that hourly rate for said work), then you could sue them and/or bring it up to your state’s labor board as a potential violation.Meaning, any company that requires this sort of work to be done without payment as such would do well to review that policy with legal counsel.Note: We (SwiftCloud ) have legal staffing firm clients and attorney clients, but are not an attorney. Yes and no. The internet is full of unscrupulous people who will get you to write their RFP for them. If you write a beautiful proposal to a company it’s not at all unheard of for them to turn your proposal into an RFP for that scope of work and shop around for someone else to do it cheaper. You’ve taken the time and effort to do an analysis of their needs and write a detailed scope of work and now they’re using your labor and effort for free.If your client is someone you’ve met face to face I would NOT give them a detailed proposal in digital format. Instead add the entire scope of work to your contract and and give them a hard copy of the contract face to face when you close the deal. It’s a lot more work and obviously theft of IP if they start retyping your document and many people will hesitate at this point and possibly give you the project. If you’re too accommodating you’ll definitely get ripped off in this business. I spent about $4–5,000 in wages putting together an analysis and scope of work for a massive project that I had been assured was mine (about a $4–500k project). They took my RFP broke down into stages and hired a much less capable company to do the first stage of the work. Eventually the project stalled and they had to do something else, but I had already lost the contract and the money spent putting together the analysis. I should have charged them for the analysis but I was operating under the assumption the project was mine (because I had been verbally assured this was the case). Never again.If you’re meeting them only online, ask them to tell you what they want (you answer their RFP) or pay you to do an analysis of their needs. Otherwise they’ll just pick your brain and take your ideas for free.

Yes, it's a play in the arsenal of every NFL and major-college team. It is almost done on a long field-goal attempt - "long" depending on the team's kicker. On almost every NFL team and many college teams, the kicker is the back-up punter, so they have at least some skill at the job.(I believe that, at the moment, every NFL team has their kicker as their back-up punter.
