Far from it. Technology has come on leaps and bounds over the last 20 years. It’s very easy to trace a suspect’s online/electronic activity now. Even if it’s cybercrime, they are almost always found. Data Protection laws have made that even easier to police nowadays.Police must read your recite your rights if you’re arrested. Not always, depending on the circumstances and the country you’re detained in. Normally they are recited before an interrogation. They don’t always need an arrest warrant either. It’s mostly tv you see that in. It’s certainly not a requirement in this country.The well-known “free phone call”. While you are allowed one phone call only when in custody to notify loved ones where you are, it’s mainly a Hollywood elaboration now as many jurisdictions may hold you between 3–24 hours without a phone call, unless they decide to charge you. Over here, they notify your family members and permit one person only to visit you upon detention.Every police officer profiles everyone. There is a degree of truth to this, but most police officers recognise that anyone can commit a crime. They are fully aware of this, nobody is immune on account of someone’s age, sex or skin colour.The police are racist/intolerant/xenophobic/ethnophobic. Just no. Not every police officer has an ulterior motive, agenda, or a power trip. If they were, nobody would trust them, let alone cooperate with them.The police like to kill people. While some use lethal force as the first and only course of action, many more use more avenues in dealing with unruly, resistant or dangerous felons. California state has a commission called POST (Peace Officer Standards and Testing) that sets out the requirements for becoming a peace officer in the state. In addition, there are other requirements that departments add on to the testing process to better weed out candidates. Having worked in personnel and training, i’ll set out what I have seen as general practice in Southern California.The process is also complicated due to the fact that people can attend the police academy on their own without having to be hired by a police department. You can pay your own tuition and buy your own equipment and attend a full police academy to get the academy certificate which then qualifies you to become a police officer if hired by a police department. Or you can test as a new recruit and get hired and then get paid to attend the academy. The benefit of paying your own way is that you are going to be a better candidate since the department knows you have already passed the academy and they save the time and money to send you, and risk you failing out. You can be hired and put in the field immediately.Written exam (optional) - Departments do not have to give a written test, it is given in the academy and people who have taken the test in the academy usually have it waived by the department. People who have not attended an academy before will usually have to take the department written test.Oral interview (optional) - Generally, after you pass the written or have it waived, you are interviewed by a panel of other officers or higher ups to assess your fitness as an officer and as a member of the department. Most places do it because they want to see what you look like and how you talk and how you think.Background investigations (mandatory) - The state has specific requirements on what has to be looked into, such as credit history, criminal history, references, driving record, as well as verifying a whole host of documents such as birth certificate, driver’s license, social security, selective service or DD-214 for military registration and service, and academic transcripts. The investigator may also come out to your house to visit you, see how you live, and chat with your neighbors about you.Polygraph exam (optional) - Most departments do it to further flesh out parts of an applicant’s past history.Medical exam (mandatory) - Done to state standards of what they look for in a peace officer such as vision and hearing standards.Psychological exam (mandatory) - State standard psychological battery to assess fitness for the position, in CA, it consists of the MMPI along with other personality inventories which amount to over 1,100 multiple choice questions and essays, and an interview with the psychologist.The academy itself is about 6.5 months long. It is 70% academic broken down into 43 Learning Domains (LD). There are mandatory topics such as criminal procedure and optional topics such as courtroom demeanor. Every mandatory topic is tested. You can fail any test once and you get to remediate once. You fail the second time, you are out. You also have physical fitness requirements for running and pull ups and obstacle courses. There is also driving and shooting and fighting and pepper spray and taser and everything else you can imagine. Fail those and you are out.If you make it through all that, then you get to go through another 12 weeks of field training, sometimes more. You ride with a field training officer (FTO) who teach you how to be a cop and how to do things according to department rules and regulations. That is a 400 hour program which conforms to state standards as well. The FTO fills out daily reports and logs areas he covered in the report, then files it in your FTO binder. It must be signed off by the Chief at the end and the book kept in your records.Then you get to spend the rest of the year on probation. Mess up on anything substantial, and you will be fired or let go, you are at will at this point in your career.If you make probation, congratulations, you get to spend another 2 to 3 decades in the best job in the world. Hope you don’t mess up and get fired. Keep your head on straight and be safe!

The format of a search warrant is usually set by the court. In California it became a statewide thing. The front page is the actual warrant. It is a fill -in-the-blanks thing and may be available as a printed form or on the department report writing system as a Word template. In some cases but in general you have nothing to do with the “Bail” hearing or process. Most people when they get arrested go to Jail and there they see a Bail Officer (or some official not a Judge who does that job exclusively).They look at the charge, the persons criminal history and set a bail or let you go on a “Re-cog Bond” (let you go with a promise to appear).More serious offenses you sit in Jail until you can go before a Judge of Magistrate. There the Prosecution makes arguments to not let you go or a bail amount at which time the Defense agrees or makes its own arguments.My influence as a Cop is essentially the report I write which lets the Prosecutor know the seriousness of the crime. They can figure out if the person is a flight risk or has failed to appear on bond before on their own.There were one or two times I ..on lower level cases would speak to the Bail Officer at the jail or the Prosecutor (on bigger cases) and argue for harsh bail condition or no bail to keep the person locked up longer. This may let me help put a case together, gather witnesses or get time to move/protect victims.99% of the time that is between you and the State or City.

Look, I’m going to let you resign, and if you do I won’t give you a Negative F5.Here are the three separation categories:Honorably DischargedRetired, resigned, or separated from employment with or died while employed by a law enforcement agency while in good standing and not because of pending or final disciplinary actions or a documented performance problem._________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________General Discharge(A) was terminated by, retired or resigned from, or died while employed by a law enforcement agency and the separation was related to a disciplinary investigation of conduct that is not included in the definition of dishonorably discharged; or(B) was terminated by or retired or resigned from a law enforcement agency and the separation was for a documented performance problem and was not because of a reduction in workforce or an at-will employment decision.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Dishonorably Discharged(A) was terminated, by a law enforcement agency or retired or resigned in lieu of termination by the agency in relation to allegations of criminal misconduct; or(B) was terminated, by a law enforcement agency or retired or resigned in lieu of termination by the agency for insubordination or untruthfulness.I don’t know about other states. Most have something similar.

Really good data on this is hard to find.  The best data I've seen would indicate:1.  They receive guns from friends or family.  Keep in mind that those "friends" may be fellow gang members, etc.  Sometimes these are sales, sometimes gifts. Often they are to pay back some debt. Relatively few of these transactions are likely to use legal means, as the parties already know that they are breaking the law.  This also includes "straw purchases" where someone buys a firearms for someone who is prohibited.2.  They are stolen.  Or, reported stolen when what really happened was the above.3.  The "grey" market.  One survey found that a surprisingly large number of criminals obtained their guns at swap meets.  4.  Corrupt gun dealers.  Some small number of gun dealers are corrupt and will illegally sell firearms to convicted criminals and other prohibited persons. Gun shows and face to face sales between strangers are fairly rare routes for guns end up in the hands of criminals.It's been well reported that the most recent fairly complete data for this goes back to 1994, and includes substantial time before current background check requirements were law.  Various misuses of some data caused congress, at the behest of gun owners, to restrict collection and distribution of some amount of this data, and no one has taken a serious effort to do a major study in it's absence.
