Most of my “hacks” have been mentioned in other answers (that’s what happens when you have seasoned teachers like Matthew Bates and Dave Consiglio on this forum), but since Daniel Kaplan was kind enough to A2A me on this, I’ll throw in a couple of hacks that I like to use for grading writing assignments.Chunk GradingThis is especially effective for elementary and middle grade English teachers. Instead of collecting essays and grading the them in full, I grade each section independently as it is completed. For example, if we’re working on argumentative writing, I’ll give a series of lessons on writing introductions for our topics, have the students complete introductions, grade them, give feedback, and allow students to revise their introductions. Then I’ll repeat the steps with body paragraphs and conclusions.Chunk grading does two things: first, it reduces the amount of time I spend grading per sitting. Instead of spending two hours to grade half a class of full essays, I can spend those two hours grading introductions for all my classes. Second, it gives students more timely feedback on their writing and an immediate opportunity to revise and improve. By the end of the writing process, I’ll have five or six formative grades, some good data for my students, and much better final essays.Unfortunately, this grading method only really works for teachers who teach the writing process from beginning to end. In higher ed, where understanding of the writing process is assumed, it’s less effective.Partner PapersFor a couple of my essay assignments, I have the students work in pairs or groups. All members of the group are researching the same topic, but each group member focuses on a different aspect of that topic to add to the collective essay. For example, if we’re discussing World War II, one group member might be tasked with researching Hitler’s rise to power, one might research the persecution of the Jews in ghettos and concentration camps, and one might research the Nuremberg Trials. The task is then to complete independent body sections of an essay that are connected via the introduction and conclusion of the essay (which are completed collaboratively).This task reduces class grading to at least half (generally to a third) while still helping me gather relevant data about my students’ writing and collaborative efforts. It also presents opportunities for peer feedback and revision.

Trust me, I lived it, you are probably being scammed. Departments of education and school districts always have to make decisions about what to include in their curriculum.  There are a lot of life skills that people need that aren't taught in school.  The question is should those skills be taught in schools?I teach high school, so I'll talk about that.  The typical high school curriculum is supposed to give students a broad-based education that prepares them to be citizens in a democracy and to be able to think critically.  For a democracy to work, we need educated, discerning citizens with the ability to make good decisions based on evidence and objective thought.  In theory, people who are well informed about history, culture, science, mathematics, etc., and are capable of critical, unbiased thinking, will have the tools to participate in a democracy and make good decisions for themselves and for society at large.  In addition to that, they should be learning how to be learners, how to do effective, basic research, and collaborate with other people.  If that happens, figuring out how to do procedural tasks in real life should not provide much of a challenge.  We can't possibly teach every necessary life skill people need, but we can help students become better at knowing how to acquire the skills they need.  Should we teach them how to change a tire when they can easily consult a book or search the internet to find step by step instructions for that?  Should we teach them how to balance a check book or teach them how to think mathematically and make sense of problems so that the simple task of balancing a check book (which requires simple arithmetic and the ability to enter numbers and words in columns and rows in obvious ways) is easy for them to figure out.  If we teach them to be good at critical thinking and have some problem solving skills they will be able to apply those overarching skills to all sorts of every day tasks that shouldn't be difficult for someone with decent cognitive ability  to figure out.  It's analogous to asking why a culinary school didn't teach its students the steps and ingredients to a specific recipe.  The school taught them about more general food preparation and food science skills so that they can figure out how to make a lot of specific recipes without much trouble.  They're also able to create their own recipes.So, do we want citizens with very specific skill sets that they need to get through day to day life or do we want citizens with critical thinking, problem solving, and other overarching cognitive skills that will allow them to easily acquire ANY simple, procedural skill they may come to need at any point in their lives?

Sometimes.What I’m surprised to see in all these answers is one of the most basic things about that job, though- it’s their JOB to sometimes be rude, “disrespectful”, and insulting.Let’s go through a few things. If you’re arriving at a border, you’re often tired from a long flight. You’ve been packed into a sardine can, you probably have to use the bathroom, you’re hoping your luggage made it, and now you have to stand in line (those first class bastards breezed right through ahead of everyone!) and put up with someone asking you questions?You’re predisposed to see them as “rude”. They presume to question your right to be in the United States? How DARE they!There’s also a prejudice among Americans at times against governmental workers. If any of them take a superior attitude with us, when they’re supposed to be public servants, well, isn’t that disrespectful?What we’re forgetting is that they don’t owe us anything. Theoretically, they don’t serve the person standing there in front of them; they serve the public that’s at their back, inside of the safe, secure, cozy borders of the United States of America. They’re on the wall, and they’re guarding the nation from illicit entry.So when we present ourselves in front of them and ask to be let (back) in, we should probably bear in mind that from their point of view, we are NOT “their employer” or a US Citizen.We are just some schmoe claiming to BE an American citizen, and the burden of proof is not on them to keep someone out; it’s on the person asking to be let in to prove that they’re legit.Finally, insulting. Believe it or not, but they are trained to not be all friendly, buddy-buddy and to provide smiling service. They are trained to be unsmiling, threatening, scary-looking people. They don’t want to chit-chat; they want to put the person standing there (asking to be let into the nation) on edge.They *want* us to be a little nervous. The people who are up to no good and have a guilty conscience will feel the pressure, will feel that disapproval, and often they’ll show it by acting guilty. Sometimes they just LOOK guilty.So if we bear these things in mind- that we’re often in a bad state of mind when we walk up to the counter, that the job of the border crossing guard is to keep people out and it’s up to us to prove we can be admitted, and that they’re often trained or work in a culture that encourages them to be rude and nasty.(Whether actually BEING rude and nasty works or not is up for debate; I’ve gone across national borders dozens of times in South America, Asia, and Europe, as well as in/out of the USA and our border officers are definitely some of the grumpier of the lot. Some places they are very friendly and even chit-chat a bit if the lines are moving well. But the point is that the US ones are trained and encouraged to be mean.)

Years ago I worked at document management company.  There is cool software that can automate aspects of hand-written forms.  We had an airport as a customer - they scanned plenty and (as I said before) this was several years ago...On your airport customs forms, the "boxes" that you 'need' to write on - are basically invisible to the scanner - but are used because then us humans will tend to write neater and clearer which make sit easier to recognize with a computer.  Any characters with less than X% accuracy based on a recognition engine are flagged and shown as an image zoomed into the particular character so a human operator can then say "that is an "A".   This way, you can rapidly go through most forms and output it to say - an SQL database, complete with link to original image of the form you filled in.If you see "black boxes" at three corners of the document - it is likely set up for scanning (they help to identify and orient the page digitally).  If there is a unique barcode on the document somewhere I would theorize there is an even higher likelihood of it being scanned - the document is of enough value to be printed individually which costs more, which means it is likely going to be used on the capture side.   (I've noticed in the past in Bahamas and some other Caribbean islands they use these sorts of capture mechanisms, but they have far fewer people entering than the US does everyday)The real answer is: it depends.  Depending on each country and its policies and procedures.  Generally I would be surprised if they scanned and held onto the paper.   In the US, they proably file those for a set period of time then destroy them, perhaps mining them for some data about travellers. In the end,  I suspect the "paper-to-data capture" likelihood of customs forms ranges somewhere on a spectrum like this:Third world Customs Guy has paper to show he did his job, paper gets thrown out at end of shift. ------>  We keep all the papers! everything is scanned as you pass by customs and unique barcodes identify which flight/gate/area the form was handed out at, so we co-ordinate with cameras in the airport and have captured your image.  We also know exactly how much vodka you brought into the country. :)

If the treatment is simple counselling in my office, all I have to do is type my note, then I bill automatically through my electronic health record. So all codes for diagnosis and type of exam are preprogrammed into the system. Treatment has occurred. No trees were injured.If the treatment requires a prescription, then I can write the prescription in my Electronic health Record (EHR) and efax to pharmacy. Or I print it out, sign it. The patient takes it to a pharmacy where his or her insurance is checked, information is added to her computerized record and the medication is dispensed. If I made an error or pharmacist has a question, then they contact me and we fix it. Sometimes a medication is covered only under specific circumstances, so I may have to fill out an online form that gets efaxed to government requesting approval. (Examples might be a cholinesterase inhibitor for dementia, or a specific expensive treatment for Attention Deficit Disorder…). Minimal paperwork for treatment.It’s more complicated if I refer to a specialist. Depending on the specialty, there are a variety of ways to refer. Some go to a centralized booking Center, some are given to the patient who then has to call and make appointment, sometimes it goes to a team that has a specific referral form (pain clinic, head trauma….). In some cases I phone a specialist to find out how to get a patient in for rapid diagnosis in cancer care. Sometimes they’ll see the patient the next day. Only paperwork was a printed out referral with a copy of the X-ray.I have very little paperwork in general for treatment to occur (which is what you asked in your question).When I do have paperwork, it’s usually for insurance companies for short or long term disability, life insurance, workman’s compensation, road insurance for someone injured in a vehicle accident, fitness to drive forms….,The other administrative stuff I have to do involves looking up the patient results for all the tests I do. I try to minimize the testing I do, for example I do not send every cough for a chest x Ray or every case of dizziness for a brain scan. But even so, most of my patients come in with an illness that does require testing and I have to look through the results, file them or act upon them.
