How does WBJEE counselling work?
WBJEE counselling procedure is very much similar to the counselling procedure adopted in JEE MAINS. After obtaining a rank in the exam interested candidates will be required to generate username and password and will have to pay the registration fee. This registration fee will be non-refundable,which is around 500. After registration candidates will be required to fill their choices online through the website. After declaration of round 1 result a candidate will be left with 3 choices. 1- accept the seat and take admission in the allocated seat.2- consider the candidate for up-gradation to higher filled choices.3- surrender the seat and pull out yourself from the counselling procedure.candidates will have to report to the reporting center within the specified period of time and will have to submit their choices failing to do so in round 1 will automatically remove you from further consideration and you will loose your seat. For choices 1 & 2, candidates will have to pay seat acceptance fee which will be returned in further rounds if you opt for choice 3( but will have to report to the reporting center, otherwise the candidate will not be able to claim it). This procedure will be repeated for three rounds and extra rounds can be introduced if the counselling team feels the necessity of it.In last round you will be forced to either accept the allocated seat or surrender your seat.

Technology: What are the best loopholes you have come across?
I came across a loophole in the library where I studied by pure accident. I used to go there to study and to also print out the lecture notes which were on average 40 pages long and the print was .10$ for each page. So basically i paid 4$ for each lecture i printed. This was a costly exercise for me and i spent on average 30$ each week for printing. The way it worked was, I had a library card and I recharged it as needed using the recharge machine. The recharge machine was about 5 feet tall and 2 feet wide. You had to insert the card, it would read it and then prompt you to insert the cash you wanted to recharge. Once that was done, you went to the print station, swiped your card on the card reader and then selected your file to print. Pretty basic stuff. One day I gave a few print jobs to the printer and went to the print station and swiped my card. I had to print 2 files of around 30 pages each. I had a credit of 3.70$ on my card. So I decided to print one file and then proceeded to the signNowarge machine to recharge the card while my file was printing. Keep in mind that the recharge machine and the print station were next to each other. Since my file was printing, I inserted my card into the recharge machine, it read my card and gave an error saying that the card is locked. I realized immediately that my card is currently being used by the printer and thus I am unable to use the card at 2 places at once. So I waited for the print to complete and then recharged my card to a value of 5$. So keep in mind I had 3.70$ initially, I printed 30 Pages, My credit should have dropped to .70$ and then recharged 5$ bringing the total to 5.70$. I did all the maths myself before proceeding to the print station and swiping my card. As I swiped my card, it showed me the current balance as 8.70$ instead of 5.70$ meaning I was not charged for the 30 pages i just printed. I quickly noticed and realized the error i got on the recharge machine while printing. I had another job to print, I gave the command to print and again inserted my card into the recharge machine and got the same error as card is currently blocked. I checked and was not charged again. And thats how I have been printing for a while now and my current balance is still 8.70$.I will notify the library eventually of the error and donate a certain amount. But for now, I am a student and its hard to make ends meet.

How do US military people ask for leave?
With a form. In the Army, it's the Department of Army Form 31. Leadership often asks that it is accompanied by a variety of additional paperwork. It is never fun requesting leave. If you are driving to you destination, you frequently have to fill out a form called TRIPs. This is an application that asks you how many miles you are driving, how often you plan to rest, if you are taking another driver, etc. Your supervisor checks your results and you travel plan. Also if you are driving you also have to fill out a vehicle maintenance check sheet. An NCO or officer will stand there and check that you have tire pressure, oil, lights, windshield wipers are not worn, etc. They'll even make sure you have a clean car.You have to fill out a mental health check sheet. This looks at major stressors in your life, like divorce or a death in the family. If you score too high you’ll still likely get to go on leave, but not before seeing a chaplain or mental health professional.A leave and earning statement is almost always required. This proves that you have the leave days accrued. Service members gain leave at 2.5 days a month (if I remember correctly). If you are flying, an itenerary is necessary. A strange requirement given that leave hasn't been appproved yet.Another form that shows you know the phone numbers of your leadership and your company/battalion phone numbers. You will definitely need a vacation after filling out the paperwork. Now, while a service member may technically take leave all year round, there are often block periods to which your leadership will confine your leave days. These days are normally sometime in the summer and always during Xmas. Taking two weeks at random, during the spring, for instance, generally requires special circumstances. The higher ranking the requester, the more likely these off-days will be approved.

What is it like to clear GATE and do your master in an IIT or IISc?
I did my master in Mechanical Engg from IISc (2014–2016) and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.I wrote GATE 2013 and ended up with 99.98 percentile (Yes, in GATE we don’t get percentile but i know how to calculate one :) ). I had filled forms of three Maharatna PSUs, IISc Bangalore Mechanical Engg, IIT Bombay Design Engg, IIT Madras Mechanical Engg for Masters. And, what is the result? Got offers from all three PSUs, accepted at IIT Bombay as well as IIT Madras. No admission granted at IISc Bangalore :(. Such was the competition.I was very upset. I didn’t know what to do next. There was no plan B.During my Bachelors, one of our seniors has visited the HOD to meet him. The senior was doing his master at IISc so the HOD asked him to give a talk to our batch and motivate us for higher studies. He did a tremendous job by showing us few clips of research works going on at IISc. Since then I had become obsessed with IISc and though I got admission in IITB and IITM, I decided i will give another try although it was a big risk.I had job offers from NTPC, IOCL and GAIL. NTPC and IOCL offers were having bonds whereas GAIL’s offer was not having any bond so i decided to join GAIL. I worked there for one year but everyday I used to think whether I have done the right thing or not. Finally, the applications for 2014 were up and I applied. One hot afternoon of May 2014. There is an e-mail in my inbox and it said Congratulations!!!!. I was on cloud nine and was so happy that I almost tripped the million dollars Gas Turbine by bumping my fist just next to the manual trip button at GAIL’s Compressor Station.I told my parents who obviously told my relatives. I started getting numerous calls from my relatives telling me the pros of government job and advising me not to resign. So, I heard their points and then I talked to my parents who apparently were completely OK with whatever decision I take. They were unaware of the phone calls I have been receiving. So, I resigned and joined my dream college for masters .And, Oh Boy! what a place IISc was!! Lush green campus, amazing atmosphere, people discussing science while eating, walking and chatting. It had that charm of a world class graduate school but at the same time it was not a nerdy or geeky kind of place. For two years I studied there and they have been the best two years of my life so far. Lab night outs for experiments, chilling with friends, those heated discussions over science and many more. No one bunked classes at IISc because classes there were damn interesting. I learned something new every single day. In the classes, the obvious was never obvious and that what was not obvious was apparently too interesting to handle without opening the mouth in awe. In lab, you were responsible for costly machinery and equipment while doing awesome experiments. The assignments were as hard a possible but what they taught was far more superior than many many books. The faculty was world class. All of them were masters of their field and it was always a great experience listening to them during their classes and talks.I never regretted my decision of leaving a government job, not even for one day. My masters at IISc helped me become a lot better engineer. It was a great personal and professional experience for me and an honor.

If India is so good, why do Indians leave India?
I would answer that using two words -”MOUKA” (Opportunities) and “THAPPA” (Seal of approval). But wait! There is more.Apart from obvious reasons of high-pay and opportunities, let me add a few more points, quoting examples of people who actually migrated from India.Who is he? - Venkatraman ramakrishnanWhat did he accomplish? - Awarded Nobel Prize in Chemistry for “studies of the structure and function of the ribosome.”What would he be doing had he stayed in India? - Would have probably become a researcher in a central institute, but would never have got his research funded “because he is a chemist and ribosome is a topic of biology.”Who is he? - V S NaipaulWhat did he accomplish? - Awarded Nobel Prize in literature. What would he be doing had he stayed in India? - Struggling to get his work published. Probably also being ridiculed behind the back for claiming that his works far far supersedes those of the Chetan Bhagat.Who is he? - Dr. Har Gobind Khorana:What did he accomplish? - Awarded Nobel Prize in medicine for “Interpretation of the genetic code and its function in protein synthesis”What would he be doing had he stayed in India? - Probably a professor in one of our universities, checking practical copies and complaining about “the system” for not giving sufficient funds for a project.Who is he? - Amartya SenWhat did he accomplish? - Awarded Nobel Prize in Economics for “his contributions to welfare economics.”What would he be doing had he stayed in India? - Would have made his parents proud for working in a “stable, well-paying government job” as an accountant in a bank.Who is he? - S ChandrasekharWhat did he accomplish? - Awarded Nobel Prize in Physics "For his theoretical studies of the physical processes of importance to the structure and evolution of the stars”What would he be doing had he stayed in India - A professor in a university, perhaps a popular one because he could not only solve each and every numerical but could tell exactly which book it was from, which chapter and even page number. In short, we don’t get the opportunities, the infrastructure and the flexibility in India as compared to west.I never mean any disrespect to any of the laureates or to my country, what I want to say is that there are perhaps hundreds of Amartya Sen and S Chandrasekhar out there, who are forced everyday to kill their dreams and get settled.Once you go to west, you can’t be pressurized to follow the beaten path. You are ENCOURAGED to look at things from a different perspective. And a “stable, secure life” is NOT encouraged. Risk takers are NOT frowned upon. But apart from the obvious I would put one more reason - RECOGNITION.Yes, at times that “THAPPA” from the west creates more impact than all your qualities, your dedication and your good nature put together, even to your closest ones.Remember this man?Of course you do.Did you know him before 2014 when he got that “THAPPA” of Nobel?Wasn’t he working already?Aren’t we supposed to know him because he lives among us ?WhyArre THAPPA yaar THAPPAPerhaps this is why “NRI Ladka” is such a fad among upper middle class fathers looking for bridegrooms for their daughters.Forget Mr. Satyarthi, do you know this man?Whenever I talk to someone about Swami Vivekananda, the first thing people mention is his Chicago Address.Seriously? Among all his contribution to philosophy, the only thing people find worthwhile is an address to Americans.I am sure it was phenomenal, but see, even Swami Vivekananda’s biggest accomplishment is his “THAPPA” from west.Forget even him, remember this man?One of the greatest man to walk on the Earth.Do you know that his methods were unique and he was the one who made our freedom struggle mass-based and not limited to elites. But do you know one of the reasons he was able to gain such a wide popularity in congress ranks, so soon after his return from Africa in 1915, was “his contribution and works in Africa.”I am sure Mahatma Gandhi would have been a great figure even without those credentials. He would have eventually achieved the respect and recognition he deserved. But even for him the “THAPPA” acted as a launch pad, even if it was not from west.Need I say more?Edit 1: BTW this was Saurabh Kumar RoyI am sure you will find my other answers insightful as well.Saurabh Kumar Roy's answer to Why is Narendra Modi making more foreign visits?

What capabilities does High intelligence give that are absent or minimal in those of average IQ?
100 IQ - Can engage in casual conversation with most, if not all other people (except those who are particularly dull - less than 85 IQ). Can memorize and repeat information effectively, without necessarily understanding what they are saying. This is why actors can play particularly intelligent characters, without being highly intelligent themselves. People at this level of intelligence are basically memorizers, who can learn and carry out a set of instructions, and even repeat them to others. This is not to say they are totally incapable of critical or original thought (that would put them at about 85 IQ if that were true), but the level of depth at which they can analyze and synthesize is not impressive, nor underwhelming.120 IQ - Again, conversing with others on casual topics is no issue, but every now and then they might make a baffling comment about a show or sport that leaves others trying to understand what they mean, or how they possibly came up with it. Pretty much have an advanced ability when it comes to analyzing, understanding and interpreting information, when compared to averaged intellects. Synthesizing material may not be their forte, but is still slightly better than 100 IQ. Due to their increased processing, understanding and retention of information, these individuals will likely have a higher level of formal education and income when compared to those in the average bracket. Most (I’ve talked to) agree that this range of intelligence is a pleasant niche to fill, as it doesn’t leave you disassociated socially and allows for a challenge and drive in education.130 IQ, and where I’m going to end the bracket as my personal experience ends here -This next paragraph comes from personal experience so please excuse any cynicism.Casual conversations are beginning to become dull at this range. Probably depends on how willing/interested you are in trivial topics like pop-culture and movies. But most intelligent people I know suck at talking about anything other than topics perceived as meaningful and engaging to them, and due to the nature of what is engaging to these individuals, casual conversation is rarely a comfortable place for them. Analyzing information is breezy, but only if we’re given the foundational knowledge that allows us to make the links, otherwise we either become stubborn and don’t want to hear any more, or we absolutely have to find out every single linking detail for ourselves, thus making learning a fairly tangential process. Processing is also fairly quick, which is a given. Synthesis of information is where differences from average intelligence become obvious here. An individual with 130 IQ should be able to learn something, and theorize effectively about its worldly influences, or form bonds between multiple sets of ideas which are logical and accurate, which others couldn’t even see being possible. Despite this ability to synthesize their own theories about subjects, they still can’t test their theory mentally like those who are smarter can. An individual with 130 IQ will have to test a theory in order to prove it, whereas an individual even smarter will be able to accept or dismiss it based purely on logical applications made mentally. Which brings me to application - no one below 150 IQ can conduct mental experiments. Everyone below 150 IQ sucks at the application of complex real-world theories mentally.I hope this gave you a general idea. Cheers!EDIT: Thankyou to Peer Landa for the edits, although I do tend to prefer the British ‘Memorise’ and ‘Theorise’ to the American alternatives, as I am Australian and speak in the archaic lexicon.

How did your UPSC CSE DAF look like?
Detailed Application Form (DAF) is filled after clearing preliminary stage of Civil Services Exam.I was clueless about how to go around filling it, and had effectively no one to turn to. Thankfully there were tons of pointers and actual DAFs available on Quora. Hope this helps anyone else stumbling their way through the process :)This is two page summary that is usually with the board. The service preferences were asked for after mains result, as an addendum. These major subheadings that you need to fill in can possibly determine your interview in entirety. If you read my interview transcript here, 90% of my questions originated from DAF. I could have anticipated and prepared for most of such questions. These are broadly what is important in DAF:Prizes, Medals, ScholarshipsSports/NCCPositions of LeadershipExtracurricular activities, interests and hobbiesEducational detailsEmployment detailsAll of these holistically come together to define you for the board. It is therefore important to put the best version of yourself you can, on paper. Some pointers:Do not to lie on the DAF. It’s easier to figure out than you think.Prizes, sports and leadership positions are to be filled in for college/university level only. Do not put class 10th chess championship here :)Leave the space blank if you didn’t do anything in that particular field (prizes, sports, leadership). Have a reasonable answer to why you did that. The board might not even care to ask.Important: write things in a way that the board WANTS to question you on them. Give them SOMETHING to go on. Leave out a trail of crumbs and hope they follow it. You will then pre-empt a large part of your interview.Re: interests and hobbies. Do not put open-ended ones. Be specific and prepare them thoroughly. For example, one of the interests I had put in was swimming. I was prepared to answer how many individual gold medals Michael Phelps had won in Olympics or 100m freestyle record held by an Indian.Everyone has something that they like doing, if not studying. Drill down to it and write it in way that attracts some questioning. If I were out of ideas, I might have just put - watching animated movies/tv - and then justified as a form of art with an ode to John Lasseter, if questioned.Do not put too much information (I felt I did, after clearing mains and re-looking at my DAF). Put 3 interests max. Try to have a common thread running through your DAF that can define you as a person (I couldn’t as I have done diverse things, smh).Prepare well for every word you have written on the DAF. Obviously, home state, meaning of name, graduation subjects, work experience, et al HAVE to be prepared thoroughly. The board might or might not ask these fairly obvious questions.Double check, then triple check what you have written. You won’t get to make changes if you make a mistake.Circulate it to your friends (non-CSE aspirants will be even better) and ask if they find anything odd. Do this over 3–4 times before you lock down your DAF.Go to the interview with an open mind. Despite what UPSC says, the board can and will judge you on knowledge, especially if it should be something you should have known based on what you have written in DAF (not on bouncer questions, do not be afraid of them). Finally, the personality test is a conversation, at the end of which you will be judged for what you spoke and how you spoke it. Be confident, be polite, be considerate, and above all, be rational.
