How good is the Summer Research Internship Program (SRIP) at IIT Gandhinagar?
Thanks for A2A.If you want to utilize your summer doing a research in your field of interest, under good guidance of experienced faculty, then I would suggest you to apply for SRIP, IIT Gn. I did my summer intern of 2014 in IIT Gn under SRIP. I would like to share my experiences, which might give you an insight about the program -During the time of my intern, the project I opted belongs to Computer Vision. The project deals with 3D Projective Geometry and some advanced concepts of computer vision. To a second year undergraduate all these topics are too much advanced to understand. My mentor, who is also aware of this, suggested me readings and also clarified many doubts that were raised during that time, with a lot of patience. Believe it or not! He made me sit in his cabin and explained all the fundamentals of Projective Geometry for one hour, on the white board in his office room. The temperature of Gujarat is very high during summer 40-50 C. But all the sheds(that's the place where we have our class rooms and labs) are equipped with ACs and you can utilize those resources 24x7. Beyond this, the IIT Gn also organizes a summer camp, in which it conducts professional courses related to technical and non-technical fields, which are absolutely free to attend. I learnt Machine Learning through summer camp, while doing an intern in Computer Vision! To make outsiders feel comfortable in the campus, the IIT Gn students also organize a lot of fun-filled activities to increase interaction. One more thing to be noticed about SRIP is that it is a research intern. If you utilise it to full extent, you can make a productive output such as research publications (Conference/ Journal). Not kidding! My SRIP project turned out into a research paper that got selected to an international conference (ISVC, Las Vegas, Nevada) :P , where I gave a poster presentation. This intern also helped me to get introduced to research!I hope this information is helpful for deciding to opt for SRIP! And the Applications will be starting from today, 18th Feb.,2015. Good Luck! -

Do you have any childhood experiences that you've looked back on as an adult, and just then realized how wrong/creepy/dangerous that was?
My childhood occurred in the early 80s. I think 1980’s society hadn’t learned to worry as intensely as we do now. We could ride around in the back of a pick-up truck without imagining getting ejected in a crash. Car seats? You mean the little plastic seat with the slender strap? My favorite toys were the Fisher-Price Little people, seemingly designed to perfectly fit in a trachea.Retroland.comStarting around the age of three until I was six I attended a Montessori school. I have so many great memories from this time and it’s the reason my children attend a similar program. There was real joy in learning. One day a friend was taught division before me. I was so jealous. So that five-year old friend taught me how to divide. “It’s the opposite of multiplying!” she said.We sat at little child-size tables for lunch. Each table sat four children and had a small candle lit in the center. At least we had candles for a little while. They were taken away after I discovered how delightful it was to make a sandwich bag ‘disappear’ by holding it over the flame. We would have field trips to a camp area by a lake. We would run pretty free. We would get in canoes and take them out into the lake. I mean, there were four and five-year-olds out in the middle of a lake alone. I remember a teacher popping a little kid wearing water wings down into the bottom of my canoe and letting her ride out with us.There was a great rope swing that swung out over the lake. There was a set of wooden stairs and a platform so kids could get on the swing and launch themselves into the lake. When I was four years old I got into the line for the swing. My teacher kept telling me that I was in the wrong line. I was standing with the older kids who were planning on letting go and falling into the water. The younger kids had a separate line but they would just swing out a little bit over the water and then swing back to the shore.I was adamant that I was jumping in the lake and they indulged me, assuming I’d swing right back. They were pretty shocked when I actually let go to splash into the water. They kept telling me that I had “broken a record” as the youngest person to do that. I didn’t really know what that meant. I kept picturing a literal music record broken in half.Recess at Montessori was amazing. Just lots of unstructured time and things to climb on outside. We had several large areas where we could play, but none of it was fenced in, and my school was in a pretty urban area.Actually, my school was right next-door to a factory that packaged potato chips. Nearly every recess a group of three of us would walk to the potato chip factory and bang on the door until they gave us a bag of potato chips.I would tell my mother about going to get the potato chips and for months she assumed I was just telling her about some imaginative play. Imagine her shock when she realized I was telling the truth. For most of my childhood years my mother was a working single mom. By necessity I was home by myself for hours every day after school and for entire summers. I roamed the entire mountain where we lived during the summers. I would ride my bicycle everywhere and I spent plenty of time hiking in the woods. I don’t know that my mother ever realized the extent of my travels or some of the questionable decisions I made (hiking by myself near a slippery waterfall?).In some ways I feel bad for my children because they won’t experience as much freedom and autonomy as I did at their ages. But so much of my freedom was born of necessity. There wasn’t money to send me to a summer camp, so I stayed at home and invented my fun.I am thankful for my own childhood experiences, yet I rarely let my own eight-year-old son ride his bicycle around our neighborhood alone. I tell myself it’s because some of my neighbors back out of their driveways fast and without looking or otherwise drive too fast for a neighborhood. But I wonder, has it all gotten more dangerous? Or am I just quick to see danger everywhere? The danger was there in the past as it is now. In my summers at Montessori we would walk to a place called Warner Park. They were filled in years ago, but it used to have lots of nice and large pools where we could swim. I remember a little girl jumping off the side landing on top of a little boy swimming in the water. He drowned. I remember watching the lifeguards perform CPR. I remember other children surrounding the little girl, telling her “you’re going to go to hell” for killing him. Thankfully, he was revived.I don’t know if the world is more dangerous now. I think it’s probably not. I think we’re just more afraid.I do know I’m happy that car seat technology has evolved.(Example of a 1980s car seat) -
I just got denied from the Google Engineering Practicum. What should I do next?
Let me tell you the story of how I got my foot in the door so that you can understand the true magnitude of what I am saying:I have wanted to go to summer camp my entire life. Applied for various programs several years when I could. I got ONE summer camp opportunity in the summer after my senior year- the very last possible chance I could have. That summer camp was Google CSSI. I got into it this way:1. I'm bored. I'm going to look up scholarships online2. "Generation Google Scholarship." No way will I get that, but I'm bored, so I'll apply anyway3. Get an email ,"You did not get the scholarship. But you can still apply for CSSI"4. *Shrug* Why not?5. I got inI could have not applied for that scholarship because I thought I couldn't get it. I had been applying for summer camps my whole life and didn't get one until after my senior year. But I didn't give up. And how I got my job is a similar story. I have been applying for any kind of job since I was 14, mind you. And I was applying vigorously- I'd sometimes go out on runs to shopping centers and just fill out applications for every store in the shopping center. And internships too- also ridiculously online. Anyway, getting my current job started much the same way as CSSI- I got the job last month and I am a sophomore in college. Here's how it went:1. I'm bored. I'm going to look up internships online2. "Accelerated Designs." Never heard of them, but I'm bored, so I'll apply anyway3. Get an email ,"We need to test you before we can decide"4. *Shrug* Why not?5. I got inSee a pattern? I waited FOREVER for both opportunities. And I got rejected numerous times before I was even accepted. And I didn't think I would get anything but I applied anyway because you never know. All of this to say, don't give up. You are good enough. But it will take time. And you will stumble across what gets you forward, not actively pursue it. You got rejected, and you will get rejected many, many times over. But keep your resume packed, up to date, and powerful. For a long time there was not a week where my resume wasn't edited at least a little. And look for everything you can, because even if you can't get an internship, maybe you can get one after joining a CS club at college. If you got nervous during the interviews and didn't know anything, study up! Try hard to improve yourself in every possible way. Also, focusing on one thing isn't going to help. Make some guis, some webpages, some games, some DOS window programs, whatever. Make a portfolio and put a link on your resume. A company like Google is going to look at that and say ,"This person is well rounded, and can do a lot of things. Plus they're having some fun with it. I like this kid!" Have some fun. If everything is formal, you can't be a Googler. Google goes through many, many applications, and many, many candidates. If you got rejected after the interview stage, that means your resume passed the screening, which is good. Work on your interview skills, intensify your studies of algorithms, and don't let this bring you down. I've been applying to Google programs, and haven't gotten one since CSSI. But I'm not stopping, and you shouldn't either. I wish you luck on your CS journey! DFTBA! -
How do I get recruited when on a stacked basketball team?
This situation is not uncommon. Lots of talented high school athletes who attend schools with strong sports programs end up playing second string behind superior athletes. Despite that, you still have a shot at playing college ball if it’s your goal and you have the talent. If you’re trying to get recruited to play hoops in college, you should:Join a local AAU or club team. If you’re serious about playing college ball, you should probably be doing this anyway since that’s the real hotbed for recruiting. Ideally you should find a team where you will get some playing time.Attend camps and combines. These take place throughout the year, but they’re especially common during the summer. The big ones, like the NIKE Camp, attract lots of scouts. Many colleges and universities have summer camps on their campuses, usually hosted by their coaches. At all of these events, they don’t care if you’re a starter on your high school team or not. They just care about what they see with their own eyes.Create and distribute a highlight reel. Whether it’s highlights from high school, AAU, rec league, or even street ball, put together a video that you can send to coaches and scouts. You should be aware that they don’t want to just see shooting and dunking. They need to see if you know your role in an offense; can run set plays; can involve your teammates; can create your own shot in a variety of situations; can get other measurables like rebounds, blocks, and assists; how you handle the ball in a game; etc. In addition to showing game highlights in your video, also show how you do drills. Anything that will demonstrate that you’ve mastered the fundamentals is a selling point.Self promote. Since your goal is to go D2 or D3, you’ll find that coaches on that level are a lot more receptive to athletes who promote themselves. Visit a few websites of the colleges that interest you and contact the coaches. Send emails or fill out their recruit questionnaires. This will help them find you. D2 and D3 coaches are usually quite accessible.Other than this advice, I should also mention that D2 and D3 programs typically have very open walk-on policies, so even if you’re not recruited, you could still walk onto the team. It’s much harder to walk onto or get recruited by a D-1 programs, but the other divisions are much more receptive. -
How can I apply for an internship at IIT Bombay?
Full-scale guide to internship ahead. It will take 3 minutes.During my sophomore year( 2nd Year) of studies I did a lot of research on Internships, how to secure it and how to get a sure-shot success.I have compiled all the questions and how to work on themWhy should I do an internship?Ans: No, you don’t need to do one, internship are not burden that you should do. You can go and learn to play guitar, feel free to explore yourself during vacations.Internships are not only in Education, there are a heck lot of internships for Music, NGOs, Tutors, Dance(Yeah you heard it right). Now for all those in colleges( I mean study focused minded people), internships are a must ( yeah you heard me right, it is must- A recent update in rule suggested that you must have 3 internships).P.S. I have still done only one internship and still in search for 2 more (I completed my recent internship from France, CNRS).2. What internship should I do, I am confused?Ans: First of all you need to find your field of interest, it can be anything, yeah anything you like, it doesn’t depend on your course/career but on your interest.I have interest in Machine Learning , Computer Vision and Embedded Systems and I am in Electronics Branch. So, once you know about your field of interest you are perfect to go ahead to search for an internship. How to find my field of interest? Refer here : “How do I find out what my actual area of interest is?”3. Where to search an Internship and how to proceed?Ans: GOOGLE , it’s all.Nothing can help you more than google. Let me be clear, never go for sites like Internshala,Letsintern,InternXXX (I am not devoting this site, these sites have all startups and local companies and jobs that won’t help your enrichment rather will prepare you for 9–5 jobs believe me, I have experience) before searching them on your own.4. What are per-requisites? What should I have? A good SOP? A good CV?Ans: I will focus on basic things to keep in Mind.a. A good balance between CGPA and Skills will help you a lot. Your chances increase manifold if your CGPA is >9.0 Not to lose hope if you haven’t got it. Neither did I.Showcase the major projects you have undertaken in your undergrad till date.Share links everywhere in your resume and cover letter. Links to your LinkedIn, ResearchGate, Codechef, SPOJ, Github etc are pretty useful.Upload your project reports to a cloud storage such as Google Drive and share the links in your resume. The mail you are going to write is the most critical part and is usually known as a cover letter. Professors are only going to open and see your resume only if your cover letter is strong.Talk about the technologies you’ve learned, the projects you’ve done or are doing, the collaborations you have undertaken with professors at your own college in your cover letter. This section is the one that convinces the professor of your credibility.Avoid attaching your CV in your mail.Upload your CV in Google Drive and share the links. Emails from unknown sources usually end up in Junk folder of university emails.Make sure your email stays at top.Email professors late at night such that your email will be somewhere at the top when the professor logs in into his email account in the morning.Talk about your inclination and motivation to work under a certain area/domain. Convince the professor about why you want to work in that certain field.Repeatedly spamming a professor will be of no good.Filter out the professors who match your research interest. Mailing every single professor of the entire department may result into marking your email address as a spammer by the institute email filter. An example of mail to professor can be:( Source : Rahul Goradia Answer)Subject : Regarding Internship in Embedded SystemRespected Prof.____________Sir/Madam,I am ——- from ——— pursuing ___________ and willing to do internship under ______________ posted on website for duration _____.Sir/Ma’am, You are working in ________ domain and you have carried out ______ projects. I will be available during whole internship and will be very sincere throughout internship. (You can add reference of your faculty as well.)It will be a great pleasure to work under you.Sincerely————.Now let us focus on my IIT Bombay Internship.Actually I received internship offer from IIT Bombay, IIT Gandhinagar and IIIT-Delhi in my 2nd Year.Focusing on IIT Bombay Internship. The IIT Bombay has two ways of internship1) Ekalavya Internship Program **EKALAVYA HOME Page (EKALAVYA HOME Page)2) By mailing to the professor of your field of interest.Let me describe both one by one and all things which you requireThe Ekalavy internship mentioned : Apply for the internship only if you are completing the 3rd year in April/May 2017. Students completing 2nd year, with exceptional academic performance and other achievements may also be considered. The procedure for ekalavya internship,a) Apply for the internship.b) If you get selected for the first round. Then wait my friend , there is one round more.c) The second round is an Online Test, I was guided a lot by my seniors for the test, they helped me a lot for the test preparation.d) If you clear the online test( which has medium difficulty), congo you got selected. In order to get an internship by emailing the professor, you can look on etiquettes on how to mail a prof., how to search for one, how to get in touch.I will add links to the mailing etiquettes soon.I will edit more details soon, rest you can comment on specific topics which you want to know about, I will be happy to help.I am a student majoring in Electronics and Communication branch. Also, let me add, your present college won’t stop you from getting an Intern anywhere ( A motivation for you).Edit 1:The Art of Emailing Professors to Secure a Foreign Internship ( Source : Internshala )Email is the most under-rated, under-used tool for grabbing an internship abroad. Read all about how to utilize it effectively! There are two definitive ways to bag an internship-1. Apply to various internship programs such as MITACS, DAAD-WISE, etc. Fill up your application form in the fanciest way possible and leave the rest up to fate.OR2. Write an email to a professor as a prospective intern/student.The latter might sound easier than it reads.Being resilient: Professors are busy people. Do not lose hope if your first, second or even third email goes unanswered. You have to be resilient while contacting professors.Timing matters: The time you send out your mail matters more than you think. Never email a professor during the weekends or Friday night; that might be a convenient time for you to email the professor but it is also the professor’s day off and your mail will get buried under the numerous other student’s applications. Professors tend to check their mail during their office hours thus increasing chances of a reply if sent out at such a time.Whom not to contact: It is advisable not to contact more than one professor from the same department as, if found out, it will dampen your credibility in the eyes of both professors.Be specific: I cannot stress on this point enough. In the subject heading of email, be sure to include the specific area you want to intern in. The professor shouldn’t have to scour through the email to search for what you want . If you want to do a research project under him/her, a subject line such as ‘2015 Prospective Research Intern for xyz subject area’ would be ideal.Funding: Most professors are reluctant to provide funding and understandably so; you are an unknown candidate with only words to prove your credibility. Typing out a politely worded, technical email will help your chances. Make sure there are no grammatical errors. If you are good at academia with prior work experience pertaining to their field, then getting funded becomes much easier. The email is all about you being a student that the professor absolutely HAS to offer a position. The real question you should ask yourself is: What can I do to make the professor respond to my mail instead of ten dozen others lying in his/her inbox? Here’s what-Start Early: Consider this. You contact professors in October for an internship that starts in January. Provided one responds, confirmation of a project takes time. There are official procedures to be considered, especially if it’s a funded project. Then there might be a matter of VISA which needs a few weeks at the least. In the end, you might find yourself racing against time to get the confirmation.TIP: If you want an internship offer by January of next year, you should start with your research six months ahead. Keep in mind the vacation timings for the countries you are targeting because most professors will have their automatic vacation responders on during these months. By the time they read their mail, yours will be more than twenty thousand leagues under all other emails.Target the right country: If you desire an international internship, you have to be smart while choosing universities. Some professors just don’t have the funds to admit you. So what’s the point in setting up base camp there?TIP: At the outset, select countries which are known to provide funding to students. For example, news and statistics show that of late, Canada is an emerging tycoon in the education sector and is allocating massive funds to projects. So it could very well be your next destination.Spam emails: Most emails from unknown addresses are flagged as spam and don’t even signNow the inbox. Professors also can’t be sure whether you are truly a student or a fake.TIP: One smart preventive measure would be to use your university email ID which identifies your first and last name and also has something like ‘@iitg’ or some such credible ending. This validates both points at once.Bulk emails: A lot of students have a huge list of professors and play chance with their emails. Writing a bulk email with a set format to all professors will only result in immediate deletion from inbox.TIP: Spell the professor’s name correctly. Get the honorifics right- Professors are usually ‘Dr.’. Salutations such as ‘Dear Dr.X’ or simply ‘Dr.X’ should be used. Write about what interests you in their body of work.Do your homework: Professing interest in someone’s work by saying ‘I would be really enthused to work under you’ has absolutely no bearing unless you give evidence to support it.TIP: Run through the body of work the professor has done, select one publication or project that overlaps with your interest and READ IT. Come up with some interesting insight or query about it. Don’t be vague, use technical words. Try to add your own ideas. Nothing proves your interest more than actually doing your homework.I recently bagged my Latest 2018 Summer Internship in “France- Paris ,Lille”.I will love to share it’s detail along with 30+ Internships that a “first year student too can fill and achieve”.Meanwhile, you can ping me on Facebook or ask your questions in the comment section for any help.(facebook : Animesh Srivastava ).Thanks for all the sources:https://blog.internshala.com/201...Tuhin KunduRahul GarodiaHappy to help you all ! How do universities match room mates?
Universities only match incoming freshmen room mates. After a student has enrolled, by submitting a non-refundable deposit to the college, the college asks the student to start an online account. As part of that electronic account, the student fills out information about themselves. What they may major in, what they like to do, when they like to go to sleep, when they like to get up, etc etc etc.The college takes all of that information provided by all of the students and runs a computer program to "match the students" as room mates (there is a lot of data entered by each student). Then at least a month prior to freshmen orientation, the college sends the room mate info to all of the room mates (doubles, triples, quads....) and they then contact each other and start to introduce themselves to each other electronically. Then for the later years, the students get together and sign up for dorm rooms together. There is a whole, well-publicized, process by which students get together and sign-up for rooms as a sophomore, junior or senior.Indeed, in some colleges, a student is only guaranteed a dorm room for three years, and must move off campus during senior year. That is relatively easy, as over the years you accumulate friends and decide to live together. Both my sons (graduated 2013 and 2014) had a very easy time matching up with room mates as freshmen (got along very well) and then found other friends to room with for sophomore, junior and senior years, with their senior year off campus (but not too far from campus). All real easy.If you have ever been to a summer camp, or scouts, etc. then you already have the experience of "bunking" with strangers who rapidly all become your friends.Easy and not to worry. -
How have you grown from an eighth-grader to the person you are now?
This was me dressed up for my 8th grade formal. This is me at my senior prom this past May with my girlfriend.Well hey, something changed there. In eight grade, I was starting to struggle with depression, but I didn’t know it at the time. My freshman year, I fully developed depression and anxiety, and started to self-harm. I developed an eating disorder, where I would throw up any time I ate something, despite how much I actually wanted to eat. Just in one year, I went from a mostly happy middle school kid to a super depressed high school student. At the end of my freshman year, I started to question my gender. I realized that a huge source of my depression and anxiety was being seen as a female, but I was too scared to come out.At the beginning of my sophomore year, my parents divorced. Within the next couple of months, my mom remarried, my mom got pregnant, my grandmother died, two of my great-grandmothers died, and my half-brother was still born. I was still self-harming.I started counselling and taking medication during my sophomore year, which helped immensely, and I quit self-harming during the end of my sophomore year. Halfway through my junior year, I decided to come out as FTM transgender, which helped immensely with many of my mental health issues. I started dressing masculine, and was immediately accepted by my family and close friends. My senior year was spent freaking out over graduation and issues with my girlfriend’s home life, but by some miracle I managed to graduate on time and walk at graduation and get my diploma. It’s not to say that I’m completely better. Being transgender isn’t easy, and I still have bad days where I don’t want to get up. But I’ve been off of my meds for a few months now, probably getting close to a year at this point, and my last relapse was still five months ago, although I was a month short of signNowing two years before it.I still have issues, and I’m not where I want to be in life, but I’ve grown up. I know who I want to be now, and for my last dance of high school, I wasn’t crying about my best friend going with my crush, I was laughing with my girlfriend driving through McDonald’s as our fancy post-prom meal. I wasn’t worried about whether I even wanted to wear a dress, I was confident about how good my suit looked and enjoying my last moments as a high school student. I wasn’t scared about being alone, I was excited to see one of my best friends by maid of honor with her date being the crush I had cried about years previously who was now a great friend of mine.Right now, I’m taking a gap year. I’m spending my time practicing trumpet, so that when I go to college next fall, I can be the best as a freshman, so that maybe one day I can be a professional trumpet player, although I would absolutely love to just be a high school or college band director. I’m furthering my transition with legal name changes and hormones and saving for surgeries. I’m preparing to vote in my first election. I’m already learning what it feels like to be in debt to someone, as I owe my dad around $1000 for car insurance now. I have my first job and am still learning how to save money (I like tattoos maybe too much).I’d say I’ve grown quite a bit since eighth grade.
