I’m not an attorney or at all familiar with employment laws in Illinois, so my answer is more a comment than a direct answer to the question.At the federal level, the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commmission had the following to say on the subject.[1]An employer may not ask a job applicant, for example, if he or she has a disability (or about the nature of an obvious disability). An employer also may not ask a job applicant to answer medical questions or take a medical exam before making a job offer.An employer may ask a job applicant whether they can perform the job and how they would perform the job. The law allows an employer to condition a job offer on the applicant answering certain medical questions or successfully passing a medical exam, but only if all new employees in the same job have to answer the questions or take the exam.Once a person is hired and has started work, an employer generally can only ask medical questions or require a medical exam if the employer needs medical documentation to support an employee’s request for an accommodation or if the employer has reason to believe an employee would not be able to perform a job successfully or safely because of a medical condition.There appears to be a line on exactly what type of medical related questions can or cannot be asked, but I can’t comment on permissible or forbidden questions with any authority.Footnotes[1] Pre-Employment Inquiries and Medical Questions & Examinations

I was a newly divorced, 21-year-old, single mom and college student. I moved back home with my parents. They were indeed, the best free daycare for my baby girl while I attended college and cleaned houses in the afternoon. I still had to pay for diapers, food, fuel, medical insurance and car insurance.I was poor, desperate and wanted to get my own apartment. One day, my economics professor came up to me asked if I saw the ad in the school paper. I hadn’t, so I asked him what it was about.He stared at me intently and asked, “Have you ever thought about selling your eggs?”“Why no,” I exclaimed. “Isn’t that a sin?”Dr. Gholami, the economics professor, said that it depended on how I viewed it. He suggested that I could be helping couples with my fertile eggs who can’t have children. He told me that he and his wife had been trying to conceive a baby for years. He admitted that my Northern European features and light blue eyes were what he was looking for and that if I was interested, he would personally pay me $2500.I thought about it. I thought that I could never do that. I thought about it some more. That was a lot of money for a girl like me.So I went into the fertility clinic and filled out a questionnaire regarding my health history and basic genetic information. They drew some blood.I told the fertility clinic that my information was solely for Dr. Gholami and left my home phone number. (I couldn’t afford a cell phone back in 1995.)The next day, I casually discussed it with a male college friend who happened to be gay. He squealed and instructed, “Take no less than 10 grand for your eggs… You’re beautiful!”“Really?” I surprisingly asked.“Really!”Soon Dr. Gholami and his wife called and met me at the clinic. There was no convincing required. They happily agreed to pay me $10,000. and any expenses for my eggs. I even brought my bouncing, blue-eyed toddler with me! The Gholami’s fell in love.Strangely, I felt proud, not ashamed to give a cycle of my eggs.I felt like God had chosen me to help this couple. And they were helping me. I just thought, “What a blessing!”Receiving the money was sure an ego-boost after being repeatedly cheated on by my ex-husband the year prior.I actually didn’t use the money for bills. I went to a children’s store called Gymboree at the mall, and bought my gorgeous little girl some cute outfits. I also used the money to pay for my masters degree, as tuition and books were expensive.I soon graduated and began a fantastic career. My daughter has always been well-cared for and recently graduated from college herself.What a blessing!

Why do we need nearly closed borders now?”Prior to 1924, we had no social welfare programs.You were free to come to this country… and if you couldn’t support yourself, you were free to starve.Now, we have extensive social welfare programs, so letting people in without restriction would mean accepting an unlimited number of potential welfare recipients.Now, I’m not saying that (legal) immigrants now are disproportionately likely to be on government assistance. But if we did just throw open the gates and say, “Anyone and everyone, come on in!” then only an idiot wouldn’t come to America if he or she were poor and destitute in the mother country—they’d see it (not unreasonably) as, “America—Land of Free Stuff!”Second, prior to the turn of the century, there was little to no danger that anyone would attempt to enter America with the intention of murdering massive numbers of Americans.Then, in the early 1900’s, there was a presidential assassination by a radical, a series of terrorist bombings, and one of America’s first “headline trials” of Sacco and Vanzetti, a pair of anarchists.The need for security was in sharp relief. We could no longer let just anyone in—any one of those foreigners might be a Bolshevik!Fast forward—9/11 happened. And that was the final nail in the coffin of open borders.Imagine if we rolled out the welcome mat—the border States would become war zones, as terrorists of all stripes would just… stroll right across the border with suicide vests, or worse.Terrorism per se just wasn’t a “thing” prior to the turn of the century. Now, there’s no putting that genie back in the bottle.

You know what? I wonder that every day. It seems to be full of patients who aren’t familiar with their own medical history or what medications they take (and why), don’t seem to be familiar in the slightest with basic self care or basics of personal health, seem to have no inkling at all about what constitutes an emergency or even how to treat others with a modicum of respect. I mean, you get so many odd people coming to the ER for really minor issues and it’s like it never occurred to them to try taking some cold medicine for their cold. It’s rather overwhelming to see the ER filling up with people like this day in and day out. Why don’t more people find it important to be familiar with their own health issues? Why don’t people understand what an emergency is? Why did so many people fail the lessons from preschool about how to speak to other people? Especially people you’re asking to take care of you!When will the incompetence end?!?

Small anecdote.When I worked in USA, I fell and broke my jaw. I could not go straight to the ER because I was leading an expedition along part of the AT.I went to the ER when I got back, I presented them with my insurance card, and they took x rays, and provided care.Then, I found out that my insurance would not cover this, because my injury was one covered by “workers comp” which is when your employer is liable for the cost of medical treatment based on their insurance for employees injuries at work.THEN I found out that I couldn’t claim on workers comp because you have to report the incident within 12 hrs. Which is not possible if you are trekking through wilderness with no means of communicating (this was pre mobile phones)After a YEAR of discussion and disagreement, I wound up having to pay for the treatment myself. Out of pocket. Despite having several million dollars worth of cover on my insurance. Despite not having done anything negligent.Several years later, I had occasion to claim on my medical insurance in the USA again. Again, I presented my insurance card, and received treatment. AGAIN I ended up having to have extended discussions with my insurer, who, in this instance EVENTUALLY covered the expense.When I am in the UK, however, I simply arrive at a hospital, get treatment, and go home, safe in the knowledge that, unless I need further treatment, which I also won’t have to worry about the cost of, I need never worry about it again.I mean, OK the staff in USA were usually NICER to me (NOT always, I have received some amazingly kind and warm care in UK, even just as the visitor of a patient), but, the statistical outcomes in USA are actually worse, the faff to get anything covered even if you ARE insured, and the fact that unless you can afford health care in the USA you are deemed not to deserve any, means that no, I would much rather the UK system.

I’ve never been involved in a category that is growing so quickly and has such tremendous potential to advance the core value proposition through powerful network effects.  What really excites me about the future is that we are only in the very early stages of this new area of human knowledge.  As our genetic network grows to ten million or even one hundred million members, we are going to be able to tell people amazing things that could redefine how we all think about identity and relatedness.That’s an important point about this market. While a lot of people think about health when they think about DNA, that’s only one facet of what it can tell. Many others offer DNA tests that can tell you about some individual health risks and genetic predispositions, but we also think that our idea of a massive relatedness graph might be able to unlock important health insights for us all.There is a good reason that filling out a family health history is the first thing we’re often asked to do when we visit a doctor.  Imagine how beneficial it could be some day to be able to see an aggregated picture of some of the health conditions and risks compiled from a massive graph of your closest 10,000 cousins!  The future is going to bring some pretty amazing things in this space.

(I'm going to describe going to a normal, legal massage therapy business in the US.)Generally, you will walk in to the shop and check-in at a desk.  You might be asked to fill out a form listing your health history (injuries, serious illness, pregnancy, and allergies) and personal preferences (like not working on your feet, scalp, or whatever, only seeing a therapist of the same gender, or using light pressure).Your therapist will greet you and escort you to a private treatment room.  The room usually has a flat padded table covered in clean sheets, a chair/stool for the masseuse, and maybe some cabinets and bottles of lotions and oils.  The therapist will ask you some questions about what kind of treatment you want, and ask if you have any questions.Then, the therapist will instruct you how to undress (usually, you can leave underpants on if you like), where to leave your belongings, and how to lie on the bed (faceup/facedown) and cover yourself with the sheets.  They will leave the room for a few minutes to give you privacy.When the therapist returns, they will knock on the down before entering.  There are lots of particulars to the massage treatment, but a few basic rules apply:Most important: Let your therapist know if you experience any discomfort or need to stop for any reason.  Hot, cold, ticklish, itchy, sore, anxious, need to pee-- anything.It doesn't matter if you close your eyes or not, talk or not, etc.  Do whatever feels comfortable for you.The therapist will keep you modestly covered at all times.  Only the parts that they are working on will be exposed.  They will never touch you in an intimate area.Relax, you don't have to be embarrassed about your body-- the therapist has seen thousands of them, he/she won't be judging yours.  They just want you to feel better.After your time is up (anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours), the therapist will leave the room so that you can get dressed.  When you have dressed and left the room, you will walk out to the reception desk where you will pay for the service.  Most of the time, you need to add a cash tip for your massage therapist.  The suggested rate is 15-25% of the normal price.  If you received a discount, you should still tip based off of the normal treatment price.

I’m a straight A’s student who likes her phone, sugar, watching movies, skipping class, talking in class, partying late on school nights/into the mornings on school mornings. My room is a mess, and I’m scared to open my locker for fear of what’s in there, yet I’m still a straight A student in AP, honors, and college classes. My GPA is 4.48.Woo-freaking-hoo.Would you be surprised if I told you I don’t try very hard?I listen to music while studying or doing homework, but only a certain genre per subject:Math=JazzEnglish=Six, Hamilton, BMC, etc.Science= K-Pop (this is a recent development)History=Piano/InstrumentalBeing my teacher’s friend has never once hurt me, but it has saved me when I’m confused on something and I need help. I’ll shamelessly admit that I’ve had some teachers just bump up my grade as needed so I could continue my straight A’s streak. Just be nice to your teachers, treat them like real people, talk to them, and remember everyone deserves a bit of kindness. Maybe you’ll even gain a friend or ally.Study guides. Fill out the damn study guides. Do not throw them away or shove them in the bottom of your locker, or I will find you and edjamicate you.Take mental health days if you need them. I would have burned out a long time ago if I didn’t start realizing that I needed breaks. Some days, I would take a health day and study and other days I’d go on a run, bake brownies, and take a long bath. It’s all about taking stepping back and looking at the bigger picture.“Meditation” is very helpful to me, and by meditation, I mean Kailie-time. On every day except Saturday, I give myself an hour free time. This is non-negotiable. I lock myself in my room, shut off my phone and laptop, and think. I think about things I’ve learned, people I’ve met, and what I want to do the next day. It’s a great destressor.I skip class. I don’t do it for sport, but if I have something important due in 2nd period or an exam in 3rd, I’m skipping the classes before it. At my school, it’s pretty easy to skip class by hiding out in the library, which is great for studying.I take classes that I care about/that interest me. I see so many kids taking they deem boring, and then they get uninterested and start falling behind. Take a class you want to take! If you want to learn it, you’ll be more prone to staying alert and attentive.That’s all I can think of for now.-Kailie Marie
