I was surprised when my straight arrow boss, non-drinker and non-smoker, took out a sample-sized pack of cigarettes at the Denver Airport and started chain-smoking as he sipped his Manhattan at the airport bar. We were headed for a week-long exposition in Toronto and I was chosen to travel with the EVP. A few people had smiled when I told them of the upcoming junket.We stayed in separate rooms, thankfully, but the rest of the time we traveled together. Are you sure that the NRA is the problem?Oh, I know that the media and the talking heads are all making them out to be some 500 lb gorilla and the reason psychos shoot up school yards, but have you ever bothered to look into the matter beyond the headlines?I’ll give you an example. In 2017, the push was for a “Universal Background Check”. The idea was to be sure that people buying guns were not criminals. Believe it or not, the NRA wholly supports this and in fact was involved with creating the current NICS (National Instant Check System) that is used.But the bill that was proposed was not what you heard in the media. First, it would not plug any “Gunshow Loophole” because there is no such thing. The only sales at a gun show that the bill covered was private sales. Of course, private sales can occur anywhere, not just gun shows.But the bill didn’t make the NICS easier for private sales. They just required all private sales to be conducted through a licensed dealer. Had this actually passed, a gun show would be an ideal location for such sales as there would be access to many dealer. In effect, you would greatly increase the number of private sales at a gun show by this law.So, what is involved with a sale through a dealer? Well, the dealer would have to do the following:1) Record the transfer in their bound book. This is a book where all the transactions of a firearm is recorded via that dealer. The book is auditable by the BATF and many dealers have faced fines for poorly kept records, so many dealers go to great pains to keep their book neat and accurate.2) Fill out the federal form 4473. This is required by all dealer sales of both new and used guns. It asks for the buyer’s name, address, the make and model of the gun, serial number, and then asks a bunch of questions. The dealer can get fined if the person fills out the form wrong. For example, answering a question with “Y” or “N” instead of “Yes” or “No” is a BATF violation. So the dealer has to carefully examine the form for errors and have the person fill out another if errors are found.3) The dealer then calls into the NICS. NICS can come back with a “Proceed”, “Denied” or “Delay”. A delay can take up to 3 days. Typically this is a name that appears similar to a Prohibited Person and requires some research. If this happens, the transfer is on hold. The dealer has no idea when the result of the research is likely to finish. If you are at a gun show, the show could be over before the approval is made.4) All this paperwork, verification, etc takes time. Time is money. So dealers charge for this service. It is typical for a dealer to charge $25-$40 per gun, but sometimes multiple guns get a discount because the dealer can process up to 4 on a single form, but when more than one gun is transferred, the dealer has to fill out Form 3310 which is supposed to help with gun trafficking.All of this is well and good if you are buying a gun from someone you don’t know and many people will require sales be conducted at a dealer for the piece of mind such protections provide. But friends and family typically do not bother with the hassle and expense.One thing you need to realize is that to get a gun dealer license is not an easy process. Since the federal government cracked down on so called “kitchen table” dealers back in the 1980’s, you now must show a commercially zoned storefront with posted business hours to qualify. Many communities don’t want gun shops, and use zoning laws to make them difficult or unattractive. For example the city of Boston does not have any dealers. In fact, the nearest dealer is 3 towns away. Many rural areas don’t have the traffic to keep a dealer in business and you’ll find they are typically only open in the evening or on a Saturday as they work another full time job. Keep this in mind as we get into the next issue.But the bill didn’t stop at sales. It stated that ALL transfers had to be done in this manner. No exceptions. So, two friends out on a hunt would need to go through the whole process listed above just to swap guns for the afternoon. Oh, and they would have to do it all again to give the gun back. It is very common on a range to try out other people’s guns - such a thing would also require the full transfer and back process. Demo guns at a national event by manufacturers? Same thing.Basically any time a gun were to swap hands, the law would apply. There are private shooting clubs where guns are treated like library books and members take whatever they want. Families regularly swap guns. Heck, some shooting courses provide guns for students to use. All of these events would have been impacted by these new transfer requirements.The NRA balked at this. Essentially the rule would curtail many of the traditions and practices that are very common and virtually never result in any kind of criminal activity. In essence it would criminalize things that simply are not crimes.Not only would it create criminals where no criminal intent existed, but the cost to manage the volume of temporary transfers, the staffing needed to take the calls and do the checks would have cost millions each year. All money that would not go toward actually dealing with criminals.When the issue was brought up, many members of Congress agreed the requirements were too restrictive and the whole bill failed to pass. The supporters of the bill did not even attempt to listen to the complaints and work out a manageable fix.Did you hear any of that in the media?But what about catching criminals?Well, the bill didn’t change anything in regards to enforcing the rules to make sure the people who should not own guns were properly entered into NICS. In fact, other than maybe getting fired, there is NO PENALTY for failing to report a person. We have laws that will jail a teacher or coach that fail to report bullies. We have laws that put priests in prison who fail to report potential inappropriate behaviors in other clergy. But we do not have any laws that punish law enforcement agents that fail to do their job and make sure that dangerous people are reported to the background system. And this bill made no effort to change that.NICS is not open to anyone but federally licensed gun dealers. The left are so worried that the system might be used to check people for things other than guns that they refuse to create a means to allow people to verify someone they are selling a gun to. It would be easy to create an app that takes a photo of the buyer and seller’s ID (or just their faces and type in some data) and then return a simple “Proceed” or “Deny” with no other details. You’d have plenty of information to audit for illegal use. And if someone didn’t have an ID, they could then use a dealer. Heck, you can’t file taxes on-line without submitting some kind of ID, so this isn’t anything unique.And yet, the bill did nothing to address the issue of accessing the NICS for easier private sales.Here is the thing. We have 20,000 gun laws in this country. On the federal side, a prohibited person touching a gun could see them in prison for a minimum of 5 years. And yet, we still see cities with high violent crime rates that have virtually no federal cases. Why isn’t law enforcement using those stiff federal laws to get the violent people off the streets? Such a program called “Project Exile” worked wonders in Richmond, VA to reduce violent crime dramatically.OK, back to the “Universal Background Check” bill.I spent a lot of words above explaining what the bill would have required of people and why the situation would have been a nightmare. You never saw any of this in the news and the media pretty much ignored the issue.When the bill was defeated, it was never reported that a “terrible bill that would have cost millions and made criminals out of the innocent was defeated”, instead, all you ever heard was“The NRA used its influence to defeat the Universal Background Check bill that would have closed the gunshow loophole”Almost everything about that statement is false.So, be careful what you want to “Fight Against”. I suspect that most of what you think about the NRA is highly biased due to the way the organization is treated in the media. When you look at the actual facts, many times their concerns are quite valid. And, they have a lot of rank and file law enforcement on their side which helps them represent real world situations. I’ve found their positions in many cases very well presented. Most of the arguments you get on TV news are highly edited and taken out of context to promote an agenda, not facilitate a debate.Make sure you know what you are fighting for. You might be surprised.

I'm one of Jehovah's Witnesses (JWs) and have been affiliated as one for the past 10 years or so. Five of those years have been spent serving as a “Regular Pioneer” (RP), which basically means, on average, I was devoting 70 hours a month psignNowing from door-to-door (well, door-to-door is just one of the many ways). And no! JWs don’t get paid for that. “Say WHAT?!!” Yep, you heard me, I kid you not, it’s all volunteer work (which is why it amuses somewhat, every time I hear that some hotshot celebrity got 'punished' with, I don't know, 100 hours of community service, which they have to complete in the next, say, 6 months or whatever. That's 'punishment' ? Anyways... I digress). But honestly, and personally speaking, those have been some of the ‘richest’ years of my life. So, what's it like proselytizing from door-to-door? Depends. I’ve psignNowed in various neighbourhoods in South Africa, from the affluent suburban doors of Northcliff where householders snack on cheese and wine, to the most indigent doors of Vrededorp where abject poverty is the staple; from the spectrum of those who can distinguish a bottle of 'Château Haut-Brion' Cabernet Sauvignon from a bottle of Merlot, all the way to those whose circumstances in life don’t allow them to care to know the difference in taste between a cup of tea and a cup of coffee.I’ve spoken to vagrants, big businessmen, university professors, priests, most of the popular Christian denominations, charismatic churches, Mormons, Seventh Day Adventists, Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus, Atheists, Agnostics, Sangomas (Spirit Healers), Philosophers, Addicts, Gangstas, and the list goes on. If I could arrange a casual sitting with the Pope, the Dalai Lama, Barack Obama, Will Smith, Bill Gates or the Queen of England, I would; but, alas! that's not likely to happen. A [wo]man can dream. AnywaysThis one time we were psignNowing in business territory, my partner that day was a Greek woman old enough to be my mother. Being the intrepid psignNower that I am, we walked into a small Hustler store (my partner being oblivious to this). We got in, spoke to the young[ish] Afrikaans lady behind the counter, I doing most of the talking. At some point during the conversation, my partner got this “OMG” look on her face, I knew then that the penny had dropped. She had suddenly become aware of her surrounding! I could have dropped in laughter right there and then, but I postponed it for later. I suppose there’s this fear/concern that, you know, “What are people gonna think?” Well, Jesus spoke to all kinds of people. What is more, we had a rather pleasant bible discussion with the woman behind the counter, she mentioned that she’s a Christian herself and goes to the 'NG Kerk' (church). There you are, leave no stone unturned. Don’t write people off. Door-to-door. Store-to-store. That being said, some people greet you with the most sincere beatific smile and welcome you in for some tea and biscuits (albeit very rare these days …VERY rare …the tea and biscuits that is) while, on the other hand, some reject and vilify you with a passion akin to the KKK, which, in the beginning, can really hurt (and understandably so), but with time, such flagrant rejection becomes… tolerable, even a source of private amusement (beats being morose, I guess. You gotta be positive. Forge ahead. I’m laughing even as I write this). There's never a shortage of interlocutors though. For those who have indulged me in conversation, we’ve had some pretty interesting dialogues. From my personal experience, if I were to sum up five of the most favourite (and controversial) topics people initiate with JWs (let’s call them the 'Big Five' since we're in Africa), they would be: 1. “You guys predicted the end of the world in [1914] [1925] [1975] etc.”2. “You don’t accept Blood Transfusions.”3. “You don’t believe in the Trinity.”4. “You believe only a 144 000 go to heaven.”5. “You guys have your own bible.” (And with the latest 2013 revision of the New World Translation [NWT], I anticipate to hear more ‘symphony’ on this) I won’t endeavor to go into these at this time, it's beyond the scope of this reply (but feel free to ask the next JW that pays you a visit or otherwise visit Jehovah’s Witnesses—Official Website: jw.org). However, what I’ve noticed very often is that those who initiate these questions aren’t really looking for answers, they’ve already made up their minds, all they seem to want is to berate and impeach you.  The bible is kinda like an atom or a car, and, depending on who wields it, it can either be a fabulous thing or a formidable object. In the same way, really, that a man’s command of a specific language can make him as charming as Shakespeare or as devastating as Hitler. I suppose I know my bible well enough to ‘weaponise’ it, but I try my utmost not to get into futile arguments with people. It just ain’t cool fighting about the bible. Better to take one’s leave. Respect is paramount. Although I must confess, sometimes, sometimes, the way some people talk, the utter belligerence, and antagonism, you almost want to ‘whack’ them with scriptures (metaphorically speaking) and read them the bible from Genesis to Revelation. Thankfully, though, common sense prevails. Having said that, if genuine disinterest is (politely) articulated, JWs have no qualms going about their business. So simply put, psignNowing from door-to-door has its ups and down (like most things in life).  You never really know what inspires people to do the things that they do. We cannot read hearts. That is the shortcoming of men. Thus, over the years, I’ve learnt the gift of taking it easy. Why? Because...

Sometimes a vendor will acquire reprint rights.  If you know the name of the report and search on line, then sometimes you will find it on a vendor website.  You will need to fill out a form giving your name and contact info.  Vendors collect this information so they can do a follow up sales call.  The big downside to this approach is that you will not have access to the analysts who authored the report.  There is no way to get the full context of the report without talking to the analyst.  Anyone who automatically short lists magic quadrant leaders is making a big mistake.  Often one of the other vendors, or even a vendor that is not even evaluated in the magic quadrant, may be a better choice for you -- due to geography, industry, budget, or special characteristics that are particular to your implementation and unique capabilities of the vendor.  You'll waste a lot of time and money finding this out the hard way unless you talk to the analyst.

I know 7 metrics that are really important for email marketing. And I want to share some tips on what useful information you can get from these indicators and how to optimize them.1. Openings (Open Rate)How many people viewed or opened a particular message. Most people open the letter in the first two days, while the other clients can read it after a week or even longer. This is probably one of the first indicators that you are viewing when sending emails. In fact, it is "inaccurate" indicator showing the ratio of opened letters to delivered ones. The letter is opened if the image is loaded. But the fact that the letter is loaded does not mean that you read it, but were just quickly deleting everything. On the other hand, the fact that the picture is not loaded does not mean that the letter was not read. Although in general, this indicator can be trusted.What will the % of openings tell you:What email topics are interesting to your subscribers. You can even hold a special experiment in our system specifying several themes.What weekdays and what time are the letters best opened? It is already a cliché that a letter should be sent on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. But it is better to not believe it and to experiment all the time. Imagine if all companies sent emails only on Tuesday at 12:00. Then the client would receive all emails in one day and spend a week to sort them out, but probably he would delete it :)What percentage of clients on average does respond to your messages?How recognizable is a sender? Add company name/brand in the "From" field for easy recognition of your email by client.The frequency of sending. Perhaps the reader simply does not have time to browse all your emails, especially if you write a lot and it is a longread.What is a good email open rate? The % of openings depends on the scope of the company, but most of all the openability is influenced by the time, sender field and the subject line. There is no clear, no permanent figure, but on average it is 20%. Even if the open-rate will be lower, it does not mean that it is time to panic and tear your hair out. Please look what next figures will tell you about the letter in the first place.The percentage is also good because it makes it easy to compare the two campaigns with different number of contacts. But we should always remember that you can not compare the incomparable. For example, the percentage of trigger letters and regular mailing, or the open rate of campaign to a list of 100 people and a list of 10 000 people, or the percentage of openings by active users and those who have not read your emails for a long time. You had better not pay too much attention to percentage since it is a measure that is important in dynamics, for example, the last time was better, or in general, it is always better, but now the whole month is going down!The percentage of email openability is the transition option for sales. In order to bring customer to a purchase - there must be both interesting content and vivid CTA to make clients want to follow the links and buy goods.The alternative of the percentage is a «Total open» indicator - the absolute number of those who opened the letter. Sometimes it is more important than the open rate.2. Passing on the linksHere everything is much easier than with the openability: if somebody has already clicked - he/she clicked. Sometimes it is said that the purpose of the letter is not to get a sell but a click. If in your case this is true, of course, this figure is one of the most important. First of all, it will point you on how the audience is interested in your letters. This figure includes the effectiveness of advertising campaigns and individual elements: the theme, the text, the interest of subscribers to your brand, your credibility. The rate for this indicator is about 4%.3. Readers who «pushed the button» (CTR)This figure tells you the ratio of clicks on links to openings. The median is 15%, which demonstrates the effectiveness of your text. CTR will tell you how much your email meets the expectations of subscribers and proves to be interested to them. If your readers do not go to the links on your site, then you should try to work on this indicator.What should I do to increase conversions:Promising something subscribers in the subject line, it is important to disclose the intrigue in the text. When your theme is bright and attractive but does not apply to the letter - the credibility of these letters is lost, and you can’t expect any clicks .The more often you update the contact list with new email addresses, the higher your chances are to increase CTR, so it does not “burn out”. Recently added contacts are often more active than the "mailing veterans." A small contact base which is always ready to listen to you is far better than big but passive one.Probably, you write about what is interesting to you, not your clients: commercial offers, your news and updates, promotions, which the client does not need at all. Think about how you can improve writing and then send only that content , which will allow the client to solve the urgent problems, get answers to questions, to see something from a new perspective, etc.Try to write short letters, as close as possible and useful to your audience. Motivate them to follow the link. Perhaps it will be a very short letter with the results of the contest, links to directories, article or previously unavailable materials, a limited time offer also works well. Note: letter should be read without scrolling, and the content has to be simple and easy to scan.Agree that not all users read a letter to the end, so add the important links higher to achieve the goal.Make sure that the CTA button is visible and attractive, even if the images turned off in their email client. Run experiments with CTA button using different colors, shapes, and positioning of the text.Segment your lists based on customer profile, geography, interests, and position in the sales funnel. Set up email by these criteria, since personal letters are always interesting.It is hard to underestimate this figure because the topic is already interesting, person spent time and opened the letter, but did not find anything useful. However, it happens sometimes, that an interesting topic was found, but the person did not follow the link and simply thought "I will read this later," and then, of course, he/she has never returned to this letter again. Sometimes it makes sense to make an offer again but to formulate it a little differently.4. Marked as spamUnfortunately, the complaints will always be, and it is inevitable. Perhaps you are not to blame, the client simply had a bad day, or he got millions of messages, and to click "Spam" button is faster than unsubscribe. It is always important to try to understand why this happens but you should pay attention if this percentage is too high, and there are many angry comments. There are several ways to prevent such a situation:Use the subscription confirmation, so the client would not forget that he had signed and once again confirmed his/her intention. It will reduce the number of people receiving the letter against their will.Do not use a "clever" subscription methods as an imperceptible tick when ordering or after a comment left on the blog. Probably, so you can collect a base faster, but to get people to stay with you will be much more difficult, especially because such methods may increase the number of complaints, especially if you have no any confirmation and the client does not even know that has become your subscriber.Do not overwhelm the client with letters. The fact that you have the permission from the client does not mean that you have to attack him with a few letters a day. If you are on good terms with the neighbors, you do not go to them for no reason every two hours. Right? Write only what's important and useful to the client and not to irritate him.Sometimes people click on "Spam" because they have forgotten about you. So do not delay with the next letter.5. UnsubscriptionUnsubscription points to the falling interest of the reader to your messages. The acceptable percentage is 1-2%. If there is a sudden surge, try to find out the reason for this, in order not to repeat the mistake in future campaigns. Why it may happen:A client stays with you for a long time and has already stopped reading. For example, when the sent information was needed for work, but the client has quit.Readers are tired of your letters, and there is no use for them. Consider a new email campaign with a new message format, and possibly with a new template.You write too often. Try to send emails less frequently.You have not justified expectations of the client. You promised newsletter about beauty and health, but instead, you send the gossip about the stars.The reader has subscribed only to get bonuses. To get the client interested in receiving your emails further, send them a welcome letter and set expectations that will continue to be even more interesting. Tell them about what you write and how often.6. Returns (errors and bounce rate)Returns show the number of undeliverable messages to the recipient. Acceptable % of returns for a regular campaign - 0.5%. Sending messages, once a month or less, it may be 4.4%. Here are some tips to bring the number of returns to the minimum:Do not buy lists. A black contact base is a dead graveyard of addresses that can potentially be blacklisted.Grow lists. It is time-consuming but worth doing.Do not start your newsletter for a year or two. Periodic mailing enables gradually to clean the base.Keep your base clean. Painlessly remove inactive addresses, in order not to spoil your email reputation.Adjust the data input check in the form of registration/subscription, to avoid typos.Adjust the address confirmation email in the first letter. Thus, you can weed out the bots and the "fake" addresses.7. Conversion rateHow many subscribers have bought your products/services, after clicking on the link? Conversion rate depends not only on emails, and also on how comfortable and simple your site is for the client to navigate. This number may be difficult to track because conversion occurs over a long period. But the goal of all marketing activities, including effective email marketing is more sales, so you have to work hard. The email services do not have this indicator, so to track it, you need to integrate with analytical tool. Alternatively, you can put UTM-tags in the letters, so later you could track clients in Google Analytics.This is our version of the seven basic metrics of any letter. After all the key figures are carefully checked, all other email campaign metrics might be selected individually, depending on your goals. For example, you can view what postal service is used by clients (Gmail, Yahoo, etc.); what kind of devices they use (mobile, desktop); what domains the readability is higher on, etc. These figures allow you to please clients and decide in which direction to move forward.

Make the copy a bit long and describe in details all of the benefits and the features. Most importantly, the pain points it seeks to resolve. If you don’t have an exact pricing, mention that would be a premium product. Otherwise, let the readers know what your pricing plan is. What you experience as a teller seems to vary on not only the bank you work for, but the branch you work in. For instance, my experience as a teller is probably very different than those in a lot of other bank branches because I work at a branch that has a lot of higher end clientele. We do a lot more catering and hand-holding than other branches do, and sometimes have to bend the rules a little to get things done.My day starts with me putting up my stuff in a secure area in the break room. If I’m opening, I disarm the alarms and do the morning walk-through with another teller. Then we deal with all the daily duties like getting the work together from earlier that week to send to the main office, putting together the sell for the armored truck, or auditing one of the many machines or vaults we have.I get out my drawer, boot everything up, finish putting the Nightdrops in the system, and then I wait. The morning is usually slow, so we spend a lot of time talking and trying to entertain ourselves… or trying not to fall asleep. Businesses show up a little later in the morning usually or throughout the day. And from there its an array of change orders, trying to sort out the mass of bills and checks sometimes neatly put together and sometimes crammed in a bag with such little care that it could take you 5–10 mins just to sort into some sort of order. But you get through all that and then you wait some more… and you wait some more…. and you wait some more… Given, a lot of branches are actually busy, so there is very little waiting involved, and much more trying not to lose your mind. But this is my branch.There’s a lot of checks being cashed, checks and bills being deposited, and people asking what their balance is. You get the occasional person bringing in their change to cash out. Or you get to let someone into their safe deposit box. That’s all the easy part of being a teller.The hard part is the questions you have to answer and the regulations that you have to follow. Telling people “I’m sorry I can’t do that,” and then having to try and explain why, because they don’t understand. It’s a lot of filling out forms. If I had a dollar for every slip I’ve had to fill out for someone I would’ve nearly doubled my paycheck every month. All of that is monotonous, though. And it can drive you crazy after a while. But the part of my job I really enjoy are those rare instances when I feel like I can actually really help someone. To put in the extra mile and teach someone who’s concerned about counterfeit 20s in her yard sale how to tell the difference between what’s real and what’s fake. To teach someone who doesn’t know English very well how to write out English numbers on his checks so he can pay his employees. It’s painstakingly going through every transaction with someone on their banking statement and showing them the result until they’re satisfied. It’s teaching high school kids how to fill out their first bank deposit form. It’s letting someone know their driver’s license is about to expire. It’s always been the small things that really make the job worth doing to me.But in between all of that, there are the vast arrays of paperwork that have to be done every day. Phone calls for all the check, debit card, and foreign currency orders. Followed by writing out hold logs. Trying to fill private banking’s little tasks. Occasional product phone calls can be assigned, which can take anywhere from one minute to an hour and thirty depending on the number of calls and the type. There’s filling out the occasional credit card application for a customer or a direct deposit request form. Then there’s the federal reporting forms that have to be filled out occasionally depending on the circumstance. In our branch, we also get a large amount of loan work that gets sent our way, so that takes up some time as well—completing their transactions and being essentially front-line secretaries. There are of course sales goals to fill, but at least in my bank, my job doesn’t rely on me signNowing my goal.Even with all that seriousness, some of it can be very funny. Like the truck who ran over lane 4. Or the fact that our ATM is constantly on the fritz and has a taste for eating people’s checks. Or when we’ve accidentally sent two tubes to the same lane. Or that guy who came in wanting to withdrawal $2000 in 1s for a wedding… or someone who chose to deposit an entire tub full of coin. There are days when I go home wanting to scream, and then there are days when I smile from ear to ear, but in the end, I love my job. It may not be an end game for me, but I have very few complaints. I work for a good company, and for now, that’s good enough for me.As for advice… the only thing I can tell you is… try to find joy in the small things. Be kind and people will often be kind to you.
