There are several types of snail and slug bait products on the market. To find the name of the poison that kills the pest, look for the active ingredient in small type on the label. Metaldehyde, iron phosphate and sodium ferric EDTA are common active ingredients in snail baits. All are effective but metaldehyde has more potential to harm pets in the environment. Iron phosphate baits are safer for use around dogs, children and wildlife. Avoid products that are combined with insecticides such as carbaryl since these products are more toxic to mammals and may have a negative impact on water quality. Apply baits at times of the year when snails and slugs are active. Sprinkle or scatter bait, don't pile it up. Place baits during the late afternoon or evening in moist and protected areas where snails and slugs are active; such as near sprinklers, fences and walls, ground cover or underneath frequently attacked plants.
