[Music] all right foreign [Music] there was nothing happening in America that had to do with the advancement the struggle for equality of black people where Mary McLeod Bethune was not there Mary Jane MacLeod the 15th of Sam and Patsy McLeod's 17 children was born in her family's Log Cabin near Maysville South Carolina in 1875 Ten Years After slavery ended Maysville is sort of a small Hamlet it is in one of the areas of the Cotton Belt of South Carolina her family worked for the same family that owned them earlier she was the first child born out of slavery that gave her a different outlook on life than all of her brothers and sisters and her parents who knew slavery her parents realized that she was destined for something bigger and her grandmother she said was Royal African blood her mother and her grandmother set the tone for her they inculcated in her the sense of pride self-knowledge in order to be a leader you have to really understand yourself and who you are and where you came
