um well let me begin my uh homage to uh Michael with with uh this print this is a uh early 20th century Temperance print uh that I use in in many of my talks for very different things and and to uh first of all describe my my my career and and how I'm W wound up uh being here um in my uh dissertation in the 70s uh I worked on the question of what do we know about deterrence and that was back at a time uh when I had a lot more hair and my colleague uh Phil cook we were both assistant professors at Duke uh Phil has kept all his hair but it's all turned white uh uh in in the meantime and so uh for the the early part of my career uh the focus of my work was on deterrence um and then um I I became interested in the question uh mostly because of the work of David Fairington who unfortunately uh can't be with us about the question of why it is that people commit crimes in the first place and understanding the developmental course of crimes and why is that some people follow this life course v
