If you are an American citizen, and are applying to a college in the USA, you Should apply as an US national (citizen), as that is what you are.Some US private colleges place a quota on how many international students they will take, and the acceptance rate is typically lower.   Therefore, stick with US citizen for all colleges that you apply to in the USA.The only question comes to financial aid.   If you don't need any, there are no problems and Tell the college that.   Very few colleges are need blind.  Letting them know you can pay it all is leverage at some colleges.However, if you do need financial aid, here is the "twist".If you apply to any Public colleges (state universities), they will only offer you Non-state resident tuition and fees which is always higher.  However, unless you lived in an US state until recently, it is unlikely that any US state college will allow you to pay "in-state" tuition.   Additionally, many state colleges are expected to take a certain percentage of state residents.  Therefore, if you apply to a very good public college, you will pay more and may be slightly limited as not being a resident of that state.However, the Private colleges (as well as the public colleges) will Require you to file a FAFSA     FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid    The FAFSA requires income information from your parents.  If they do not pay US income taxes, then the verification of your family's income will be an issue when the college looks to award you financial aid.   They will not have a good idea of what your Expect Family Contribution should be.    I believe, depending on the country that you live in, there are in-country methods to verify your family's income, but you will need to contact each college and see what they accept.All the best.

The FAFSA is simply the most commonly used application form for student aid applications GENERALLY, and almost every college and university asks for it rather than go to the trouble of inventing their own - even though, in fact, many of them DO have their own application, and STILL want to see a FAFSA.What you actually should do, is go to the website OF THE COLLEGES you are interested in, and check the parts where financial aid is discussed, and see what they want to see.Probably 90% or more will want a FAFSA, maybe 10% will want their own form IN ADDITION to the FAFSA, and a certain number will also want to see the CSS profile.So fill out the FAFSA online. There is part of it which asks for the codes (every college has one) for the colleges you want to have them send the form to.
