How did your UPSC CSE DAF look like?
Detailed Application Form (DAF) is filled after clearing preliminary stage of Civil Services Exam.I was clueless about how to go around filling it, and had effectively no one to turn to. Thankfully there were tons of pointers and actual DAFs available on Quora. Hope this helps anyone else stumbling their way through the process :)This is two page summary that is usually with the board. The service preferences were asked for after mains result, as an addendum. These major subheadings that you need to fill in can possibly determine your interview in entirety. If you read my interview transcript here, 90% of my questions originated from DAF. I could have anticipated and prepared for most of such questions. These are broadly what is important in DAF:Prizes, Medals, ScholarshipsSports/NCCPositions of LeadershipExtracurricular activities, interests and hobbiesEducational detailsEmployment detailsAll of these holistically come together to define you for the board. It is therefore important to put the best version of yourself you can, on paper. Some pointers:Do not to lie on the DAF. It’s easier to figure out than you think.Prizes, sports and leadership positions are to be filled in for college/university level only. Do not put class 10th chess championship here :)Leave the space blank if you didn’t do anything in that particular field (prizes, sports, leadership). Have a reasonable answer to why you did that. The board might not even care to ask.Important: write things in a way that the board WANTS to question you on them. Give them SOMETHING to go on. Leave out a trail of crumbs and hope they follow it. You will then pre-empt a large part of your interview.Re: interests and hobbies. Do not put open-ended ones. Be specific and prepare them thoroughly. For example, one of the interests I had put in was swimming. I was prepared to answer how many individual gold medals Michael Phelps had won in Olympics or 100m freestyle record held by an Indian.Everyone has something that they like doing, if not studying. Drill down to it and write it in way that attracts some questioning. If I were out of ideas, I might have just put - watching animated movies/tv - and then justified as a form of art with an ode to John Lasseter, if questioned.Do not put too much information (I felt I did, after clearing mains and re-looking at my DAF). Put 3 interests max. Try to have a common thread running through your DAF that can define you as a person (I couldn’t as I have done diverse things, smh).Prepare well for every word you have written on the DAF. Obviously, home state, meaning of name, graduation subjects, work experience, et al HAVE to be prepared thoroughly. The board might or might not ask these fairly obvious questions.Double check, then triple check what you have written. You won’t get to make changes if you make a mistake.Circulate it to your friends (non-CSE aspirants will be even better) and ask if they find anything odd. Do this over 3–4 times before you lock down your DAF.Go to the interview with an open mind. Despite what UPSC says, the board can and will judge you on knowledge, especially if it should be something you should have known based on what you have written in DAF (not on bouncer questions, do not be afraid of them). Finally, the personality test is a conversation, at the end of which you will be judged for what you spoke and how you spoke it. Be confident, be polite, be considerate, and above all, be rational.

If you had an infinite amount of money to build an ideal high school, how would you build it?
I have been waiting for this question for so long. You all think far too small.Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Michael Faraday Academy of Science! The Faraday Academy is an elite private boarding school for dreamers, intellectuals, and world-changers. It is located high in the mountains of Italy. Our proud motto: sic itur ad astra. In English, “thus one journeys to the stars”.CurriculumAt the Faraday Academy, we do not conform to the regressive standards set by bureaucratic politicians. Our teachers are renowned professors from around the world, teaching academic-level material. While the Faraday Academy is intended for high-school-aged students, we do not teach high-school material. Rather, we teach for degree credit. Some students complete their bachelors degree while still in high school, others have a head start when they go off to college and university. All our programs are original academic courses created by professors specifically for the Faraday Academy.Daily StructureStudents may choose as many courses as they think they can complete, though there is a minimum amount one must choose.Hours are determined by the courses one chooses.Campus BuildingsThe Freeman Dyson School of Physics - Here, the greatest minds in the world have come to teach the next generation about the fundamental laws of our universe. The Wolfgang Pauli Linear Accelerator - A top-notch atom smasher built by some of the greatest nuclear engineers on the planet. Part of the Dyson School. The Robert Lanza Biological Laboratory - Named after Robert Lanza the scientist, not Adam Lanza the serial killer! Features cutting-edge gene splicing tools and equipment. Possibly the source of the glow-in-the-dark squirrels that roam the school grounds. The Antoine Lavoisier Center for Chemistry - Run by a legendary Nobel Laureate, this institution is recognized as having some of the best teachers in the world. The Fritz Zwicky Astronomical Observatory - Featuring one of the largest telescopes in Europe. The Emmy Noether School of Mathematical Sciences - For those of us for whom math is not a chore but a passion. Students here have already discovered several important new theorems. The Marvin Minsky Center for Computer Science and Robotics - Featuring “Turing’s Ghost”, the most powerful supercomputer outside of the US or China, and a robotics laboratory which does not pursue competitions such as FIRST, but rather focuses on machine learning and kinematics. The Gustav Eiffel Engineering Facility - From rockets to buildings, anything is possible here. The Spinoza Philosophical School - Ethics, religion, morality, science, knowledge, and everything in between.SpaceportThe Michael Collins International Spaceport is regarded by many as one of the highlights of the school. Every student is guaranteed a personal suborbital spaceflight aboard an XCOR Lynx (with an experiment of his choice) at least once during his time at the school.Dormitory and AmentiesThe school has several world-class restaurants, with food from all over the globe. We also have a library, theatre, art gallery, and concert hall. There is a pluralistic temple as well, for religious students. The dormitories are beautiful and clean. Each student has a personal room, with a comfortable bed, a bathroom and shower, a work-desk, and a high-end computer setup.ArchitectureThe Michael Faraday Academy of Science was designed by the greatest architects available. We blend a variety of styles, including:Gothic RevivalNeo-FuturisticIndustrialAdmissions and RecruitmentOur school teaches students aged 14–18.Here at the Michael Faraday Academy, we have three criteria for acceptance:Intelligence: We want only the brightest. For this, we have devised the Faraday Mind Metric, a unique test designed to isolate those who have potential but have not necessarily achieved it. This helps assess students from impoverished countries, or students who are unable, for one reason or another, to express themselves intellectually.Passionate Optimism: A love of the future, progress, and human advancement, and a tangible desire to work hard to ensure a better future for humanity.Achievement: This can be in the form of excellent grades, self-studying, prior acceptance into exclusive programs, a dedication to scientific hobbies, exceptional knowledge of certain topics, etc. An applicant must choose only one of these, though.Additionally, we search for the following personality traits in our prospective students:Appreciation for history, culture, fine art, and music.Desire to put intellectual pursuits ahead of materialistic or hedonistic desires.Politeness, courteousness, and graciousness.Revolutionary thinking beyond limits, far ahead of the curve, with no respect for the established status quo. While students from wealthy countries can usually apply and go through a straightforward admission process, we also have recruitment offices, where dedicated educators search for students in war-torn, ravaged, and poor countries who have the potential to positively affect the human future.RulesWe do not permit wild parties, raucous music, or generally unprofessional behavior. All students must either wear dress clothing (suits or buttoned shirts), work clothing (lab coats, engineer aprons), or the school uniform within the main school buildings. Free dress is permitted within the dormitories and around the general grounds. The school uniform has been crafted by top fashion designers from around the world.CostsAll fees, including tuition, spaceflight, food, and dorms are free for the students, and completely covered by the Infinity Fund, part of the nonprofit organization that established the school.

I was accepted to an Ivy League university. How do I pay for it?
Let's take a step back. First, congratulations on your acceptance! I am positive that you and your parents must be very, very proud of your achievement, and your acceptance into an Ivy League institution is indicative that you have accomplished quite a bit. Let's dive into the economics and sociocultural aspects of college to understand its cost, what offsets it, and how to actually afford it. College is expensive, yes, but often we do not pay sticker price. As others have noted before me, scholarships, both need based and merit based are abound. Counter to what one poster has noted, if you only incur about $35,000 from attending an Ivy League institution throughout your four years, I would suggest you dive right in and never look back. Attending college, though much more so at some (the Ivy Leagues as well as most Top 25 schools are in this first category) than others (mostly private universities that are small, unknown, have limited networking potential, or are for profit) reaps immense rewards. Do not fool yourself that anyone can be "above" this invaluable learning experience, or that you are necessarily wasting your time there. In college, you learn more about yourself, grow up faster, and form more meaningful relationships than you will at any other point in your life. People that try to convince you otherwise because they personally did not see the value in it were, in my opinion, too blindly arrogant to see the value of the experience, or chose a poor fitting college or university to apply to. For some, they may have failed to gain acceptance into a prominent college where these boons are present. You are not in this category, and their perspective is of limited value to you because they were not, and never were, in your position to consider such a valuable opportunity. That being said, college is about fit, and while not every college fits every person, that is not a valid reason to skip college altogether. In the Top 25 alone, I would argue at least one of those schools are a wonderful match for you, in terms of culture, aspirations, and what you want to do in the future. Being accepted into an Ivy League school implies that you have been accepted to other non Ivy League schools as well. Check some of them out personally, and see if the fit is there. Having recently graduated from the University of Southern California, largely regarded as one of the most expensive universities in the nation after taking into consideration room and board costs, I could safely say that even had I graduated with signNowly more debt, it was worth it. The lessons learned, relationships made, and opportunities afforded to me by the university's status and prestige (which attracted employers and recruiters) are immensely valuable, and is arguably worth the roughly $240,000 sticker price that some paid. After all, where else could I buy all of that in a four year period? The university is a centralized hotspot of learning, education, and experiences. Learn to thrive in it, not stride from it. With regards to the economics, simply know that you can expect to be worth monumentally more with a bachelors qualification than without. I would estimate you to be worth at least three times more, with USC Marshall School of Business graduates earning a median of roughly $60k after graduation, compared to roughly $20k of most unskilled jobs. That's not to say that you're doomed to doing an unskilled job without a college credential, but you will be at an immense disadvantage compared to the established network, accredited, and university backed graduates that are coming out. In the same period of four years, it would be very difficult, though not impossible, to replicate what you would be able to achieve with four years at an Ivy League, but again it's a matter of fit even before we get to the cost-benefit analysis. Let's think of it one last way. Time is money, right? How long would you think it would take for you to, independently of college, attain what a four year college graduate would be capable of achieving? Six years? Eight? Ten? How much money is that difference in time worth to you?To me, even two years, with four years of amazing experiences and personal development in a nurtured environment is easily worth the price tag.

How can I become a Rhodes scholar?
Very, very difficult. You need to have a 4.0 grade average, or some very good reasons why you fell short with a B or two along the line. You need to be an outstanding person outside of classes, Generally that starts with championship-level excellence in some sport. Usually it requires that you were team captain, or the leading scorer. You also need to show excellence and leadership in other areas, such as music (not rock), debate, theater, writing, journalism, Scouts, public service, and so on.Your school counselor can provide you access to the application forms and procedures for the Rhodes scholarship, if you have the above level of qualifications, and your counselor will help you fill out the application forms.
