It depends a lot on the question you want answered. Some statistics (and answers) need a more solid backing and a higher percentage to be valid. You should look into some basic statistics concepts like confidence intervals. It should be understandable if you've taken some college level calculus. What confidence intervals is is that based on your results, and the number of results you have, you can tell with X amount of confidence that this is the right answer. Of course it can't apply to everything, but that's the general point.

So, a job like big data where a variety of skills are needed, a certain broad skill set is needed to be even looked at, no publishing or teaching or academics is involved then you start to see an issue.Next, after we culled those who don’t have the basic skillset needed or don’t want to self-learn it; those who don’t want to work so far out of their area of expertise; those who have no CS interest; those who don’t have enough quantitative skills (even a fair amount of STEM Ph.Ds don’t and that's basically all Data Scientists except some economists that worked in mathematical econ, econometrics, theoretical microecon, game theory, or computational econ/simulation which is not many); also of course basically all masters candidates won’t be looked at which leaves us with a much, much smaller pool.Now, we need someone who has theoretical, applied and computational mathematics skills and the ability to self-expand that; someone with extensive computational statistical skills and a strong probability and mathematical/theoretical stats background that is very broad and needed areas can be quickly increased in depth; we need someone who may not be the world's best coder, but someone who can code well enough and document well enough for professional software developers (data engineers) to implement the “designs”; we need someone with bleeding CS theory and applied knowledge in AI/Machine learning/NLP/NLA/etc, Databases, Algorithms, Networks and more who can learn new skills in those areas and always stay up to date; and finally, of the top of my head we need someone willing to work with data that is not in the area of interest, research and document things that won’t be published and write it at both high levels for other data scientists and medium levels for data engineers and low levels for everyone else.Know many people like that?
