What is the biggest risk you have taken in life? How did it turn out and what did you learn?
At the age of 23, I moved across the world by myself to a rural town where I knew nobody and didn’t speak the language.I was about to graduate college with my Mechanical Engineering degree. I’d done the corporate internship thing and I wasn’t impressed. I had several job offers but I wanted to do something different while I was young and without obligations, something before I had to settle down, marry, and work the rest of my life.I needed funds. I decided I’d apply to grad school overseas. Honestly, I don’t even like engineering, but they offer good grad salaries. I applied to many, Kasetsart University in Bangkok, Thailand was the first to reply. I accepted right away on a scholarship of a native English speaking student. The school was located in Bangkok and had a decent sized foreign exchange student program. Seemed like I could make friends easily, Bangkok seemed like a cool city, and it would be an experience. I didn’t think any more about it until a couple days before I left.My mom wouldn’t look at me, she was devastated I was leaving. I saw my Dad cry for the first time in my life. All of my relatives called me telling me I was going to get sex trafficked if I wasn’t careful. My mom told me not to go. She said “What if something happens to you while overseas? You’ll have no one to help you! We won’t even know about it!”It was true. I was going to be completely alone. I didn’t know how to call an ambulance, I didn’t even know if they had reliable medical care. I’d be a young woman living alone 9,000 miles away from anyone I knew. I might be a target, I didn’t know how safe Thailand was. I hadn’t even rented an apartment yet.I almost backed out on multiple occasions. Somehow I made it to the airplane. But once on the airplane I started freaking out. What if Kasetsart University was a disguised sex trafficking ring? What if the people they were sending to pick me up at the airport were actually there to kidnap me? I thought about a lot of escape routes. I cried publicly in an airport for the first time in my life.I arrived. I met the people taking me to the university. They didn’t seem like kidnappers, but I was still uneasy. I got in their car. They told me it was about a 3 hour drive away.“3 hours? I thought campus was only 20 minutes from the airport.”They looked at me, confused, then replied “That’s the main campus, you applied for the Kamphaeng Saen Campus. You didn’t know that?”That’s right. I applied for the wrong campus. I was on my way to a rural town in Thailand to study for the next two years. How has it turned out so far?ConsI was completely dependent on my professor and his grad students. No one in my town speaks English besides my professor and some of the school staff. I couldn’t use public transport, order food at a restaurant, or go anywhere by myself when I first arrived. They had to help me get an apartment, get a phone plan, pay my bills, and fill out school signNowwork.I was the loneliest I’ve ever been in my life. Because no one speaks English, I couldn’t make any friends. I was silent for months because I couldn’t speak. I couldn’t ask someone in the elevator “what floor?”, I couldn’t tell someone I liked their shirt, all social interaction ceased to exist. There’s a 12 hour time difference between America and Thailand so I couldn’t call my family or friends except in small 2 hour windows in the morning and at night.I’m stared at everywhere I go. I’m a 5′11″ tall white woman in a town of 5′0″ Thai people. Everyone wonders what I’m doing there. They ask my professor and the two other grad students who I am. I’m a spectacle. When I arrived, I couldn’t travel. Online bus schedules don’t exist here. I couldn’t ask them in Thai where the bus went or what time it would leave. I couldn’t tell them where I wanted to go. I was stuck in this rural town unless someone took pity on me and escorted me.I had a lot of existential crises. I thought I made the biggest mistake of my life. I got depressed. Called my mom a lot. I was irritable and rude to people because I was so lonely and depressed at times. I didn’t know what I was doing with my life.ProsI gained a new Thai family. My professor jokingly called himself “my new Thai father”. He made sure I had every need fulfilled because he knew how helpless I was. If I wanted to go somewhere, he had a grad student escort me there (sometimes on trips up to 6 hours!). He made sure I had someone to negotiate my phone contract. He found the best apartment for me to live in. If I asked for something, he’d find a way to help me get it. Even though the grad students could barely speak English, they showed me a lot of love and supported me through all of it.I experienced a culture like I never have before. I’ve stayed in Thai people’s farm houses. I’ve been to Buddhist monk ordinations of friends. I’m experiencing Thai college life. Thai people tell me their frustrations of their own country and their hopes and dreams. I’ve experienced festivals and religious holidays as a Thai because they’ve taken me in as one of their own. Everyone treats having me around as an honor. It’s humbling and amazing.I’ve been learning a language faster than I’ve ever learned before. Desperation can make you learn something really fast. I wanted to be able to order food by myself. I wanted friends. I wanted to be able to travel Thailand while I was here. I started studying two hours every day. I’ve never been so dedicated to something in my life.I developed a lot of new hobbies and skills. When you’re trapped and alone, you think of all the things you can do to make the best of your situation. I started blogging, I started doing professional photography, I got into really good shape, and I learned robotics. Having no friends and a lot of spare time may be lonely, but you sure do develop yourself.I get to travel every weekend. Once I could speak enough Thai, I could get around. Travel is so cheap in Thailand, I get to see something new every single weekend. I get to see every part of Thailand, and I get to meet people due to my new language skills as well. What did I learn?I learned how to be content with being alone. I am still learning a new language. I learned that other parts of the world have a lot of struggles and problems I’ve never had to deal with and never even knew existed. I learned lots of new hobbies and skills. I learned that culture shock is a real thing. I learned that the path you take isn’t as important so as to how you react to it.My decision to study here didn’t make sense in an educational sense. I had better scholarships at better schools. I ended up here by accident. But the experiences and lessons I’ve learned have been invaluable and I’d do it again. I’ve learned a lot and it’s only been 5 months, I can’t wait to see what the next year and 7 months brings me.If you’d like to read the full story of me moving to Thailand, you can here. -

How do you assess the S&P 500 Index fund as an investment risk, and why is it considered a very safe index to invest in?
The S&P 500 is large cap U.S. stocks. The risk is dependent on the overall health of U.S. economy and corporate AmericaI would not say it's a safe index unless your talking over 10 years and better yet your lifetime.. It is very dependent on health of U.S. economyDiversification is safer. At the very least use Total Stock Market Index and much better is adding international and fixed income. The safest way to invest in stocks is to add fixed income in a fixed asset allocation and rebalance once a year. Rebalancing forces you to buy low and sell high -

What is the process of adjusting the status for my spouse who is currently in a B1 visa and is visiting me in the US? I am a US citizen. Can I file his green card when he is here? What are the forms that I need to fill out, and what are the risks?
Yes you can absolutely apply while he is here. The general start of the process is that you file form I-130 to apply for his permanent stay (start of the green card process), as well as form I-485 to adjust his status. The 485 will allow your spouse to stay with you in the country while he awaits a decision and still maintain a legal status. There is no risk to his legality, as long as the forms and accompanying evidence are received by USCIS before the last day that his visa allows him to be in the country.Entry stamps are usually for no more than 6 months in the country and USCIS generally takes about 2 to 3 weeks to process and send out a receipt. Subtract those days from his date to leave, and use that as your minimum safe timeline. Keep in mind that some forms may come with restrictions in travel and he may be stuck in one place for a while e.g. I-485s may take months to process and can be voided simply by leaving the country without getting special permission in advance.Note also: Messing up the timeline can mean he may have to return to the country of origin to maintain legal status and await a decision. That may literally be a separation of numerous months to several years. In some cases, visitor’s visa may be revoked or entry denied once you put in an immigrant petition for him. After you start the process, you may also have to file a myriad of other forms, including an affidavit of support, co-sponsor form, an immigrant visa application, an application for removal of conditions, unlawful presence waiver and so on, all of which come with their own fees. USCIS will usually direct you to what forms are next, once you have completed each stage of the application. The range of forms you may have to file will change depending on the specifics of your case and the complexity will vary based on a number of factors. The simplest of these are the number of years you have been married, your spouses immigration status, but may include any number of things that you have not reported in your very general question. My advice would be to seek the help of an immigration lawyer to navigate the process. It is something you could do by yourself. The process is tedious and requires attention to detail, but is manageable. However, under the latest Trump directive, immigration officers are now simply denying applications for minor errors or insufficient information. In the past, they used to request additional documentation before denying outright, but are no longer required to do so. That would mean an error would require you to resubmit an entirely new application (once allowed), and pay all the hundreds to thousands in cash again. It may even interrupt your spouses legal status and add years to the process. No petitions are guaranteed to be approved, so it is best to be thorough and careful and avoid even the appearance of impropriety. Best of luck to you both!Disclaimer: I am not even close to being an immigration lawyer. I just work with a diverse population and have helped clients navigate this process scores of times.
