You can represent yourself. Each form is different per state or county but generally an answer is simply a written document which presents a synopsis of your story to the court. The answer is not your defense, just written notice to the court that you intend to contest the suit. Limiting oneself to just ABA-accredited schools, bar pass rates for first-time test-takers range from 60 percent (California, which is low for numerous reasons beyond just its being a difficult exam) to the upper-80s (numerous states).  So every year, you have 10-40% of test-takers failing the bar on their first try, depending on jurisdiction.  Within this group, anywhere from 30-70% pass on the second try.  Those who fail a second time face real difficulty, because while it is true that anyone can fail the bar exam once (e.g., you had a difficult personal/family issue right before the exam, you didn't spend enough time studying, you obsessed over a question and failed to manage your time properly, etc.), failing a second time means that you likely don't know how to prepare for/take these types of tests.  While one occasionally reads about people passing the bar on the 5th or 15th try, it's more common for people to try 3 or 4 times and then give up.I don't know that the bar exam is a perfect, or even good, indicator of one's ability to practice law.  It more or less amounts to a test of one's ability to memorize numerous rules, and also to regurgitate and apply those rules in a (barely) coherent manner on various essay questions.  In other words, it's more accurate to say that the bar exam is a test of preparation/memorization, with only some testing of legal reasoning.  Some of what is on the exam is applicable to what we do for a living (I routinely have to identify and apply applicable law on the fly or on very short schedules), but for most lawyers--especially non-litigators--it's not a particularly good approximation of real practice.  Accordingly, there are doubtlessly people out there who fail the bar exam yet have the capacity to be good attorneys, just as there are unfortunately people who pass the bar yet in spite of having limited practical legal abilities.But that being said, while the bar exam is high stakes (it's a barrier to entry in the profession, after all), it is not anywhere near as difficult as some lawyers make it out to be.  Because of the amount of preparation/stress involved, and perhaps also for ego reasons, many lawyers like to tell fish tales about how awful the bar is to non-lawyer friends/family, but the reality doesn't live up to the hype.  Most people take the bar in late July following graduation from law school in early-mid May.  This means that you have more than two months to prepare for a test of memorization and limited application of memorized rules whose contents are fairly consistent year-to-year.  While, again, it's quite possible that anyone could have a bad day and fail once, if you can't pass the bar after multiple attempts, you really have no business complaining about being locked out of the practice of law, because the actual practice of law is much more difficult than any bar exam, and provides far less preparation time.  If anything, the bar exam is too easy, as evidenced by the not-insubstantial percentage of lawyers who pass the bar yet are unable to practice competently.  So is the bar exam a perfect test?  Absolutely not.  Does it serve a purpose to keep people who fail to demonstrate minimum levels of preparation/competency in legal reasoning away from the public at large?  Absolutely.
