In August 2016 we had a two week long family holiday in Majorca, flying from East Midlands Airport to Palma with Ryanair. When we checked in for the flight home to East Midlands Airport with Ryanair, we found that one of our cases was slightly overweight, but by no more than 3kg, but we still had to pay a penalty charge of 45 Euros. In front of us in the queue were a number of young people, all with small cases that looked as though they would even fit in the aircraft cabin, who had a smooth and quick check in, but behind us was another family group who later told us that they too had to pay this 45 Euro penalty charge for excess baggage weight.I should mention here that my friend who strongly advised and even insisted that I fly with Ryanir is single and retired with a partner from the Czech Republic and so the couple divide their time between living in the U.K. and the Czech Republic. Ryanair really suits them, because they can book some very cheap flights (often at even £10) between their two countries and also take frequent short holidays no more than a week long, out of season, to other less popular and mainly Eastern European destinations, having no luggage that needs to go in the aircraft hold but just small cases that easily fit into the overhead cupboards in the cabin.By contrast, we are a family who could travel only in the school holidays and have a lot of luggage, as families do, and our flights with Ryanair for this holiday in Majorca had cost a total of almost £1,000. Ryanair therefore offered no benefit to us in terms of cheap fares but also had the disadvantage of a not too user friendly web site when I tried to check in for a holiday of more than one week duration and with luggage to go in the aircraft cargo hold. However some passengers with Ryanair who are flying on trips longer than a week and have luggage for the aircraft hold find on arrival at their airport for their outbound flight that they have not completed their on line check in properly and so are subject to punitive additional charges by the airline over either or both of these issues.I could not help thinking that by heeding my friend’s advice and choosing Ryanair like we did, our high fares and penalty charges were really only subsidising the cheap flights of my friend and his partner (not to mention the British stag party holiday market in Eastern Europe, of course !). All of this explains of course why Ryanair is branded the “Marmite of airlines” which is praised and reviled in equal measure, for the way that some of its customers (like my friend) are winners and others (like our family flying to Majorca) are losers.My advice to families who going on their summer holidays to the popular resorts in the Mediterranean would be to shop around to try and find the best deal among the grossly inflated peak holiday prices, which I know is not easy, and above all choose an airline that has a generous luggage weight allowance. To be honest, Ryanair is not the airline that I would recommend for them, and contrary to that misplaced advice of my friend I would not use Ryanair for a family holiday in future myself either.
