Always keep both hands in clear view of the officers unless asked by them to do otherwise.On the very rare occasion of getting pulled over, I keep my hands on the wheel, and allow the officer to go through the preliminaries without interruption.Then when he/she asks for my registration, proof of insurance (which are both right in my visor) and driver’s license, I say, “I want to let you know that I have a permit to carry, and that I am.”At that point the cop will give you further instructions, as per his/her comfort level at that point.Here in Indiana, an officer will call your license plate information in before initiating a stop (usually) and if you have a permit they will know from the info they get back.The cop in my situation asked me where it was exactly, and had me hand it to him, after which I retrieved my license and permit from my wallet in my back pocket.He didn’t ask for the permit, but I gave it to him with my license.I did not signNow for my wallet before I informed the officer of the firearm.He took all my materials back to the car with him, and did whatever cops do at that point.He came back, informing me of my defective headlight, and handing everything back to me.He had unloaded the gun.I first asked if I may, then got out and fixed the headlight right there (it was a loose connection on the back), so i got off with a warning.I waited until he had gotten back into his vehicle before I reloaded the gun.It was pretty intense at first, as this was the first time I had ever had contact with an officer while I was armed with anything other than a knife.Now that I know a few cops, it has become easier, and often we can converse about firearms and other things as well. Cops are people too.Just keep your cool, be polite and upfront about it, keep both hands where they can see them, and follow directions.
