I've read some of these ideas on how to get the best deals or bargaining techniques when buying a car and a lot of them come with a bit of an arrogant approach.It has been a long pastime to negotiate for a car and on behalf of the good sales people out there who are doing their jobs honestly and professionally it has been ruined by the stereotypical idea that all car sales people are bad and "out to get you". There is a point to all this so please bare with me. I can tell you that there are some real cheese balls and just horrible sales people out there looking for the quick buck but the industry is turning around and many laws govern the way dealerships are able to deal with car buyers. Anymore, if a dealership or one of it's sales people crosses the line the DMV can get involved and close some doors and just one day out of business hurts immensely.So, if you really want to get a good deal on a car then do your homework. It's a bit arrogant that you walk right into a dealership and demand that someone give you their best price. Besides, it's not THEIR best price you're after it's YOU'RE best price. There is nothing wrong with a dealership asking for sticker price or even asking retail blue book for a used car providing that car is in the condition the blue book states it's in.If you walk into a dealership and sit down at their desk and tell them you'll sign the paperwork the minute they hit your target figure, you will have an extremely difficult, long and arduous car buying process. I'm sorry Jason but this is terrible advice. Here is exactly how you get the best deal on a car.1. Research the automobile you want online. The prices online usually match the prices at the dealership unless you are looking at adding some additional features and even those usually match unless they are aftermarket.NOTE: NEVER ask a dealership for their hold back fee. Be reasonable and offer them $500 over invoice unless it's a model that there are plenty of and even then it's fair to do this. Sales people are paid anywhere from 20% to 30% commission depending on the dealership. They do get a flat fee is the commission turns out to be 20% of nothing. This flat fee is anywhere from $75 to $150.Be FIRM but be RESPECTFUL.2. Know your credit rating or have a pre-approval from your local credit union or bank.Dealerships can make money on your with interest rates. If you kindly let the sales manager or internet manager on the other end of the line know your intentions and they give you any grief or fight then let them know you can call the next dealership if they aren't willing to take your offer. As a sales manager I NEVER let a client walk over price and I was never a jerk about any of it unless the client started getting offensive. 4. Make sure the car is on the lot for you to come and get.At the time of my career in the car industry, we could not take deposits over the phone so holding an automobile for anyone was impossible. Especially if it was a promotional offer. The DMV would shut doors for this. Make sure it's there by asking the sales manager (Hopefully you know his/her name by now) to go out and physically touch that car to make sure that it is the color you want and it has all of the amenities you want. Dealer trades are also possible but price could be affected depending on availability.5. Once you make an agreement with them and you have a feel good vibe.Go get your new car and enjoy. I can successfully do this at any time and get exactly what I want without be rude or making enemies. In fact, I will make a friend that can help me in the future if I should have a friend or relative who needs a car. You can even make that sales manager your go to for all your car needs. even if they don't sell the brand you or your friends want, they have friends who can help you.
