Detailed Application Form (DAF) is filled after clearing preliminary stage of Civil Services Exam.I was clueless about how to go around filling it, and had effectively no one to turn to. Thankfully there were tons of pointers and actual DAFs available on Quora. Hope this helps anyone else stumbling their way through the process :)This is two page summary that is usually with the board. The service preferences were asked for after mains result, as an addendum.These major subheadings that you need to fill in can possibly determine your interview in entirety. If you read my interview transcript here, 90% of my questions originated from DAF. I could have anticipated and prepared for most of such questions.These are broadly what is important in DAF:Prizes, Medals, ScholarshipsSports/NCCPositions of LeadershipExtracurricular activities, interests and hobbiesEducational detailsEmployment detailsAll of these holistically come together to define you for the board. It is therefore important to put the best version of yourself you can, on paper. Some pointers:Do not to lie on the DAF. It’s easier to figure out than you think.Prizes, sports and leadership positions are to be filled in for college/university level only. Do not put class 10th chess championship here :)Leave the space blank if you didn’t do anything in that particular field (prizes, sports, leadership). Have a reasonable answer to why you did that. The board might not even care to ask.Important: write things in a way that the board WANTS to question you on them. Give them SOMETHING to go on. Leave out a trail of crumbs and hope they follow it. You will then pre-empt a large part of your interview.Re: interests and hobbies. Do not put open-ended ones. Be specific and prepare them thoroughly. For example, one of the interests I had put in was swimming. I was prepared to answer how many individual gold medals Michael Phelps had won in Olympics or 100m freestyle record held by an Indian.Everyone has something that they like doing, if not studying. Drill down to it and write it in way that attracts some questioning. If I were out of ideas, I might have just put - watching animated movies/tv - and then justified as a form of art with an ode to John Lasseter, if questioned.Do not put too much information (I felt I did, after clearing mains and re-looking at my DAF). Put 3 interests max. Try to have a common thread running through your DAF that can define you as a person (I couldn’t as I have done diverse things, smh).Prepare well for every word you have written on the DAF. Obviously, home state, meaning of name, graduation subjects, work experience, et al HAVE to be prepared thoroughly. The board might or might not ask these fairly obvious questions.Double check, then triple check what you have written. You won’t get to make changes if you make a mistake.Circulate it to your friends (non-CSE aspirants will be even better) and ask if they find anything odd. Do this over 3–4 times before you lock down your DAF.Go to the interview with an open mind. Despite what UPSC says, the board can and will judge you on knowledge, especially if it should be something you should have known based on what you have written in DAF (not on bouncer questions, do not be afraid of them).Finally, the personality test is a conversation, at the end of which you will be judged for what you spoke and how you spoke it. Be confident, be polite, be considerate, and above all, be rational.

I was selected for a summer internship 2016.I tried to be very open while filling the preference form: I choose many products as my favorite products and I said I'm open about the team I want to join.I even was very open in the  location and start date to get host matching interviews (I negotiated the start date in the interview until both me and my host were happy.) You could ask your recruiter to review your form (there are very cool and could help you a lot since they have a bigger experience).Do a search on the potential team.Before the interviews,  try to find smart question that you are going to ask for the potential host (do a search on the team  to find nice and deep questions to impress your host). Prepare well your resume.You are very likely not going to get algorithm/data structure questions like in the first round. It's going to be just some friendly chat if you are lucky. If your potential team is working on something like machine learning, expect that  they are going to ask you questions about machine learning, courses related to machine learning you have and relevant experience (projects, internship). Of course you have to study that before the interview. Take as long time as you need if you feel rusty. It takes some time to get ready for the host matching (it's less than the technical interview)  but it's worth it of course.

Depends how specific you want.  I know several small farmers who claim that they now have to spend 2-3 hours a day, every day, collating the data to fill in forms, and filling in forms to confirm that they are conforming to EU standards in relation to animal welfare, food standards etc.   Apparently the EU Nitrates Directive is particularly onerous, but apparently there are hundreds.  None of them sell their goods into the EU.Being Brits, they are meticulous in ensuring that they have the correct data, fill in the forms and submit them on time.  They all say the most exasperating thing is that the exercise is completely pointless.  Nobody ever comes from the EU to check that they are telling the truth.  If they wanted to they could literally invent all of the information they file, and it would make no difference to anyone.My experience running a financial services firm was very similar.  When I worked in that world, I had to spend about 5 days a month with my compliance officer filling out forms or collating data to ensure that our funds all met European guidelines under UCITs 3 and then UCITs 4.  The thing was , we had no European clients.  Not one.  Nor did we want any, or market into Europe.   We could in theory have created funds that were NURs (fall outside of UCITS), but most of our clients had worldwide rules in place that they could only invest in UCITs.  That's not the fault of the legislation per se, but where the legislation almost always goes wrong is that it does not take into account the practical impact of its creation.  I think many Brits find it hard to understand why there isn't more opposition to EU red tape from within the EU.  It may be that there is a huge cultural difference in assumptions of what is reasonable in terms of bureaucracy between the common law based UK (where all things are legal unless specifically illegal) and roman/napoleonic law Europe (where the law defines what is allowed).  It may be that European's simply ignore the rules, or their national governments don't actually implement European directives.  It's a mystery to us.ADDENDUM (I went quite specific in a follow up question, so I've added it to the main answer)Is the paperwork mostly for when things go wrong? Answer: No. Most European regulation is procedure based rather than outcome based.  In other words it focuses on requiring you to define how you operate, and requires you to document your operations thoroughly, rather than focusing on punishing you when your failure to follow procedure leads to a bad outcome.  It is usually the case that the penalties for failing to document how you supposedly operate are greater than the penalties for failing to operate properly. Sounds bonkers?  Yes it is.  This oddity seems to occur because the exercise is essentially bureaucratic.  It is more concerned with covering the back of the civil servant in charge of your area of regulation than protecting the public.  Or to draw a scenario.Minister of energy: "How was I supposed to know the nuclear reactor was unsafe?  Look, the operators filled out 50,000 pages signNowing that their operating procedures were reasonable. It's not my fault it blew up."Moving to your second question, you've actually hit the nail on the head.  Lets take UCITS as an example, as its an example i'm deeply familiar with. Ucits stands for Undertakings for Collective Investments in Transferable Securities.  UCITS 3 and 4 is the European legislation that covers anything a UK punter would recognise as a "Fund" or a US punter would call a "mutual fund".The deal with UCITS is that all funds sold in Europe must comply with it.  All of them.  Irrespective of where or to who they are sold (i.e. a fund sold to a london based client, with london cased customers may still count as European if somewhere in their ownership structure lies a european subsidiary) .  It requires a ton of ongoing paperwork, which in no way actually protects investors from sharks or frauds.  The supposed quid pro-quo for the paperwork is that in theory it passports you so that you can sell your fund into Europe.  In theory this sounds like a sensible compromise.  In practice it is useless and horrific.  Why?In most of Europe people buy investment funds through their bank.  In the UK almost all customers buy funds from small independent fund managers. So a UK manager has almost no practical access to European markets. In addition all continental European countries have passed local legislation that requires native language documentation and the hiring and appointing of local fund representatives if you want to sell your funds there. So the situation you end up with is that ALL funds sold in the UK, even if they are only sold to UK customers, and the firm in question engages in no European activity must comply with the very onerous paperwork demanded by UCITS.  At the same time in practice UCITs does not actually provide a passport, because access to the local markets is both practically and technically impossible.From what I have heard, in my various conversations with farmers, and the many small manufacturers I interviewed in my previous career, the issues that UCITs present in finance are replicated in their industries.EU legislation tends to be a minor inconvenience for huge corporations.  For them hiring 20 compliance staff to fill out some forms is a financial irrelevance.  For the small businesses that face exactly the same regulatory and filing requirements as their behemoth rivals, it is an absolute nightmare.The grievances of people who moan about EU red tape are very real.

Selling your records online takes minimal effort, and I make substantially more money vs taking it to a record store or putting it on Craigslist.Everyone shops online now. People don’t browse record stores like they used to. People want to buy from the comfort of home and not make the trek to and pay more at a record store vs the web. So when you take your records there to sell, you’re going to get a fraction of what they’re worth vs online. I’d do this only if you have no interest in the legwork and just want to liquidate them.I probably spend 5–8 hours a week listing items, taking pictures, and packing orders. That little amount of time generally pays my phone and grocery bills; it makes for decent supplemental income. I pay $10 a month to print my own postage, and just drop of my orders in a USPS bluebox down the street to avoid having to make a trek to the post office.I can get packing tape, bubble wrap and packing paper from a Staples and that’ll run me maybe $40 every other month, depending on volume of sales. I also break down cardboard and cut it to make own free vinyl mailers.Vinyl can be shipped USPS Media Mail - which will run you about $3 per record shipped within the US. With packing, each record is around 1LB. The price goes up about 50¢ for every additional LB, the maximum being 70LBS.Here’s where you should sell your vinyl onlineAmazon handles roughly 50% of all e-commerce transactions, of any kind. It’s the price you pay for selling on Amazon, but the sales generally outweigh that setback.Pricing is more competitive on this site - if you list a record for $5.99, other accounts that have the same item sometimes have computer generated program that continuously lower there item 1¢ to yours, you may have to continuously lower your prices over a period of time. Because of this, you may see some records priced for 1¢. These are generally high-volume sellers who make a small profit from shipping on each transaction.Not as good for rarer vinyl- you’re restricted to only what can be found in Amazon’s database - so if you have some rare LP or an import, it may not be on Amazon, and you don’t have the ability to create a listing from scratch. If you do have an upgraded Seller Account, and only if the record has a Barcode, you might be able to add the item to their database. A lot of red tape.You may not be able to list some items in the database - some titles are restricted to premium seller accounts, which can be expensive and very difficult to get approval for.Similar items may sell quicker on eBay vs Amazon.Payment turnaround is about a week.If you use a Tax ID on your seller account, you have to pay/claim taxes on in-state orders.——————————————————————————————————-eBay can be equally profitable depending on what you have.Tip: Fill all 79 characters of your eBay listing titles with as much info as possible. Each word in your title is a search keyword. Try to include catalog number and genre. If you run out of characters, omit punctuation, your the’s & ands’s, or prepositions - to, with, in, on, at… the word vinyl can be redundant and unnecessary because it’s already listed in the vinyl category. Example:OK: Alice Cooper ‎– Love It To Death Vinyl RecordWay Better: Alice Cooper ‎Love It To Death LP Straight WS 1883 Rock 1971 Exposed ThumbPros:Pricing things cheap on eBay will often move product much quicker than on Amazon.Ability to create your own listings - this is great if you have something rare or an import.Auctions are great for rare or desired records. You might get people in a bidding war and will drive up the final sale price. I sold David Bowie’s first album for about $250 as an auction on eBay.Payment is instant if you have your items as a Buy-It-Now.Selling lots - Instead of listing a bunch of $5 records, do lots of 5 for $25, or an auction. If you curate the lots, they will sell. Don’t do a bunch of random records, that doesn’t work. Make lots of Jazz, Rock, Metal, Folk, or by Decade, Record Label.Customer service is a little better than Amazon, and it’s not as easy to lose your account, and it’s easier to get a suspended account reinstated.You don’t have to provide a SS# or Tax ID to be a seller on eBay.Cons:More fees vs Amazon - eBay will generally give you about 100 free listings a month, but after that, listing each record, regardless if it sells or not, will cost you 35¢. Ebay does email promotions once a month offer additional free listings.Transactions are done through Paypal, which is a bit of a restriction.Selling limits - depending on whether or not your account is brand new or if you’re an established seller, you get a finite amount of listings per month. For myself, I can only list 270 vinyl per month or - a few thousand dollars in sales - whatever comes first. With Amazon, your potential is limitless.Bargain mentality - people will more often want to haggle on eBay because that’s sort of the culture of that website. No one ever contacted me on Amazon and made an offer on my listings. You’ll get a lot of lowball offers from potential buyers on eBay. If you select the Best Offer option, you’ll see what I mean. I personally do not use it.Takes longer to list an item - where it might take 60 seconds on Amazon, it’ll take few minutes per item on eBay. I have to write the title, take and upload photos and click on a bunch of other presets vs listing on Amazon where it’s way more streamlined.—————————————————————————————————Discogs is also a great website to sell records - it caters more to audiophiles and serious collectors.Tip: Look for rare vinyl or local music vinyl releases that might end up at a Goodwill or estate sale, and add them to the Discogs database. Someone out there may be constantly visiting Discogs looking for that odd record some local band put out 20 years ago and only made 100 copies and was never professionally distributed. These can go for a high price.Pros:Ability to create new releases - this is great if I have something rare. Chances are it already exists in the Discogs database, which is far more comprehensive that Amazon or eBay. I regularly add rare titles to Discogs and sell them, vs trying it on eBay. People spend more time looking for specific versions of albums on Discogs, and the layout leads people to those specific versions much better that other websites.High priced sales for rare items - on average rarer tapes sell faster and for a higher value on Discogs compared to Amazon/eBayAbility to accept payments like Check or Cash - while that may not be a plus for everyone, I do get a number of Discogs orders where someone just mails me cash or a money order. Cash is risky for the buyer though, they have no way to track if it ever arrives to a seller if they just use a stamped envelope.The commission fees are lower on Discogs than than Amazon/eBayCons:Not the best website for common vinyl titles. Your Bruce Springsteens, Barbara Streisands and Toni Braxtons aren’t going to sell nearly as well vs Amazon / eBay - those sorts of records sell at a slower pace on Discogs.Less site-traffic - Discogs doesn’t get nearly as many visitors as Amazon or eBay, but it still substantial.===========================================================Other Tips:Craiglist is good if you have cheap records, or a huge lot you wanna get rid of. Don’t waste your time trying to list single records. Or use it if you strictly wanna deal in cash transactions and not deal with shipping. Most people will wanna haggle the price. If you wanted to sell 50 records for like $20 - give it a shot.Free webshops like Storenvy are an option for selling your vinyl but these search results appear further down on Google, so they substantially get less site traffic. I would not advise paying for a monthly website to sell your vinyl, you’re just competing with the other websites who carry the same items and get more visitors.Record stores are resellers who have to make money too are going to pay you nothing-$5 depending on title and condition. $5’s gonna be for the rare stuff. Most of what you bring in won’t fetch more than $1 per title. There are a few extenuating circumstances.Half-Price Books also buys/sells vinyl. They pay even less than most record stores. I only sell worthless records to them, if I want to get a few bucks I can use to buy something in the store. Generally I’ll take in a box of like 20 records, and I’ll get an offer like $4, if it’s all run-of-the-mill stuff. Unless you ask, they will keep all the records they didn’t want to buy from you, and offer you an amount on only what they wanted to pay for, and just throw those other items in their clearance section.Facebook Marketplace may be an option to sell vinyl - depending on where you are located.Don’t try to sell records that are heavily scratched, especially if you aren’t test playing them before trying to sell them. Since people can’t see/feel/hear the vinyl, you’re going to get a lot of returns & complaints. Indicating that your records have been tested, and mentioning surface noise and other minutiae will help thin out potential problems. The more you communicate and describe the item, the more money you’ll make. A good template would be something like:Used 12” vinyl record in Good condition - some minor scratches on record, test played, playback not affected. Jacket has minor wear.Always grade your used records lower than they actually are. Even if you’re properly trained to evaluate the condition of vinyl - everyone else has an opinion, and someone out there will complain on the most minuscule of imperfections; better to exceed one’s expectations.Record Swap Meets happen all over the country, these can be a lot of fun if you set up a table, you might make a little money for the weekend, or trade for stuff you want. Same applies to Flea Markets, Sunday Markets or Garage Sales.
