Why don't schools teach children about taxes and bills and things that they will definitely need to know as adults to get by in life?
Departments of education and school districts always have to make decisions about what to include in their curriculum. There are a lot of life skills that people need that aren't taught in school. The question is should those skills be taught in schools?I teach high school, so I'll talk about that. The typical high school curriculum is supposed to give students a broad-based education that prepares them to be citizens in a democracy and to be able to think critically. For a democracy to work, we need educated, discerning citizens with the ability to make good decisions based on evidence and objective thought. In theory, people who are well informed about history, culture, science, mathematics, etc., and are capable of critical, unbiased thinking, will have the tools to participate in a democracy and make good decisions for themselves and for society at large. In addition to that, they should be learning how to be learners, how to do effective, basic research, and collaborate with other people. If that happens, figuring out how to do procedural tasks in real life should not provide much of a challenge. We can't possibly teach every necessary life skill people need, but we can help students become better at knowing how to acquire the skills they need. Should we teach them how to change a tire when they can easily consult a book or search the internet to find step by step instructions for that? Should we teach them how to balance a check book or teach them how to think mathematically and make sense of problems so that the simple task of balancing a check book (which requires simple arithmetic and the ability to enter numbers and words in columns and rows in obvious ways) is easy for them to figure out. If we teach them to be good at critical thinking and have some problem solving skills they will be able to apply those overarching skills to all sorts of every day tasks that shouldn't be difficult for someone with decent cognitive ability to figure out. It's analogous to asking why a culinary school didn't teach its students the steps and ingredients to a specific recipe. The school taught them about more general food preparation and food science skills so that they can figure out how to make a lot of specific recipes without much trouble. They're also able to create their own recipes. So, do we want citizens with very specific skill sets that they need to get through day to day life or do we want citizens with critical thinking, problem solving, and other overarching cognitive skills that will allow them to easily acquire ANY simple, procedural skill they may come to need at any point in their lives?

How do I figure out what I want to do after high school?
My parents helped a lot. They never pushed me in one set direction, but I do remember several intense conversations about not “dying with the music still in me.” They made it clear that following my “gift” was more important than following a “dream” or just finding a way to pay the bills.Their advice narrowed the choices down a little. The problem was that there were many things in which I was keenly interested and proficient. Although I would be lying if I said that giving up the dream of being a marine biologist was easy, in the end that was the right thing to do — none of my “gifts” touched on that area at all.The closer I came to high school graduation, the more time I spent considering #1 what I enjoyed doing and #2 what I did well. Working with children was something I had always enjoyed, and I was good at it. With those two things considered I tentatively decided to study elementary education and minor in English. This is the first time that I have written this down in over 20 years, but what I wanted to do was be an English teacher in a Scandanavian country or perhaps Germany or Austria.Going to college was a “no-brainer.” After taking my ACTs I received several full and partial scholarships to major in English. I had every intention of taking advantage of one. My Mom's health wasn't the best so I settled on the full college scholarship that was close (but not too close) to my parent's home: the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). I was content with the choice — even if it wasn't my first choice: the partial scholarship to Georgetown. For several reasons my parents weren't the happiest with my choice, but this was the primary one: they didn't want me to “settle” for what was good rather than go after what was better. However, they were still a little hesitant about me going to a Catholic university (we're Independent Fundamental Baptists). Their compromise was for me to attend 1 year of Christian college, and then they would help pay what wasn't covered by the scholarship to Georgetown. It didn't really make a difference to me since most of the credits could be transferred, and I had already CLEP ped out of several freshman and sophomore courses. But of course plans are made to be broken…During the first semester of college my Mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was late returning for second semester because I stayed home over Christmas break to help her recover from surgery and chemo.During second semester I met my husband, and the rest is history.Teaching degree — checkEnglish degree — meh (sigh, no Georgetown)English teacher in Europe — nopeElementary and ESL teacher in a private school in Canada — checkAnother pro is that I'm now fluent in Spanish.A con is that my English isn't quite as sharp as it used to be.So….(drumroll)How did you figure out what to do with your life after high school?I made a plan based on my abilities and the things I enjoyed.I modified the plan as needed based on circumstances while keeping focused on the true goal.If you're good at something and you enjoy it and want to make a living from it then get further training: university, college, junior college, technical institute, apprenticeship, etc. It doesn't have to take four years — it may only take a few months. Just get out there and do it.Always be ready to roll with the punches. Or as my Mom says: “Be instant mashed potatoes” (ready at any moment). Flexibility can never be over-rated.
