In most states, no.In many states, you’re not allowed to use a rental car for your road test. In a few, you are allowed to use a rental car, but you must get extra written permission with your rental agreement on the company’s letterhead that authorizes the vehicle to be used for a road test. In short, you can’t just show up at a rental car place, get a car, and take it to your DMV road test. Check your state road test requirements first. If you’re one of the few states that does allow rental cars, be sure you verify you’re good to go and get any written permissions needed.What about using a Zipcar?Unfortunately, you can’t use a Zip car for your road test. It explicitly states in their policy that using a Zipcar is not allowed for road tests as well as racing, towing or taxi services.What are my other options?If you don’t have friends or co-workers that can help, you can Google driving schools. They usually will help with this too. Fail? I was lucky not to get arrested!It was a week after my sixteenth birthday and I took my dad’s Ford Mustang to the Driver’s License Bureau to get my license. After waiting on line for about twelve years, an instructor walked out to the car with me and we began the ride. Everything was going well and we were just finishing up, when a patrol car pulled behind us and lit us up. I pulled over and the officer walked up to the window and said the car had been reported stolen. Apparently my mom forgot to tell my dad that I was taking the car and he freaked out and called the cops when he didn’t see it in the driveway (sixteen years of absentee parenting didn’t help him remember that he had a son approaching driving age).So we got my mom and dad on the phone and he explained things to the cop and we were just clearing everything up when a red Corvette zipped by, nearly bowling over the officer. The cop said “okay take care - gotta go!” and ran to his car to give chase, but he was flustered and stumbled as he got into his car. I thought “well I as good as have my license - time to be a good Samaritan!”I kicked the car into gear and, with the appalled instructor spitting and protesting, we took off after the red offender. He merged onto the highway and I followed behind him, pitting the muscle of Ford against General Motors. We started approaching 90 miles per hour, weaving in and out of traffic and I noticed cop cars in the rear view mirror, but their old Crown Victorias were having trouble keeping up with our speed.Having watched my share of high speed chases on TV, I felt more than confident. So I decided to do a PIT maneuver. At 105 mph, I pulled up alongside him and gently nudged his rear bumper with the front of my dad’s car.Okay, so apparently the PIT maneuver is only meant to be performed at low speed. I couldn’t believe there was no disclaimer on the news coverage of the high speed chases I watched! This was information that I needed!The result was terrifying. Both cars spun violently out of control, with the instructor whimpering like a baby beside me. But I kept my wits about me and remembered what the Missouri Driver’s Guide said: “turn into the skid”. A quick twitch of the wheel had me straightened out while the Corvette was still spinning like a top. By the time he regained control I had cut in front of him, but he swerved around me and the chase resumed.Luckily, traffic was light as we tore across the county, destroying our previous speed records. But suddenly his tire blew out and he flew off the highway, and in my inexperience I instinctively followed him over the guard rail! Luckily there was an office building right there and we both crashed through windows on the fifth floor and continued our chase, between the cubicles and out the windows on the other side. We landed on the highway exit, but the corvette’s luck had run out and it burst into flames on impact. My dad’s Mustang, however, landed like a feather. As the cops finally caught up, I executed a textbook parallel park on the side of the road, thus concluding my exam.Except: the instructor had mixed feelings. “Listen dude,” he said. “Every part of the actual test was performed according to the book, but it was reckless and irresponsible of you to just chase a bad guy. You’re underage and a civilian - we just can’t have you doing that.”But he was so impressed at how I handled the car (except the going-over-the-guardrail part) that he agreed to not put the test on my record and just said I should come back another day. Which I did. And I passed.Note: Some of the details here may differ from what actually happened. In fact, some of them might just be based on things I saw in movies and cartoons. But I’m pretty sure the part about me passing the driving test is true since I have a license in my pocket with a picture that looks like me. But who knows? Reality is a weird thing.

Don’t get in a hurry! Make sure all your shifts are good. Stay in your lane. That is the basics, but they will take you around some corners that are tight enough to see if you let the trailer go off pavement. Watch your trailer swing and if you need to stop and wait for a vehicle to go by then do so. Stop before the stop line and then if you need to pull up do so watching for pedestrians. If you miss a couple of gears just recover. No one can jump right into a new truck and make it sound like an auto unless you have a lot of experience with that setup. They are more interested in knowing your not going to run off the road and have the trailer sink in soft dirt. Also want to make sure your not going to hit anything. That includes backing. If you have to get out and look 27 times to be safe then do so. Calm down and don’t get shook. It will be fine.Before you do the evaluation do not forget to do a thorough vehicle inspection. Document any issues.

yes. as a former semi driver I know that every year there are non citizens provided a license to drive large trucks. they may not be able to read or write English but they can get a license. they get an assistant during the licensing tests to read for them and interrupt the questions and provide suggestions as to the right answer. they “cannot” fail. they are only discovered when they become lost because they can’t read or are involved in accidents.

You’re expected to follow his instructions to the letter and one slight mistake could ruin your chances of getting a licence,” he says.When it was his turn to take the wheels, Franco felt uncomfortable because he was thrust into an unfamiliar location. He trained in Deira, but the final road test was in Al Qusais. The surroundings were completely different and it was very easy to lose focus. Consequently, he committed three major mistakes, including not turning properly and failing to sound the horn at the right time.”“In my second take, everything was smooth until we drove into a residential area. I was driving at 38kp/h since the maximum speed limit was 40kp/h. The examiner said I was supposed to drive at exactly 40kp/h. I pleaded for him to reconsider because 38kp/h was still legally allowed, but he wouldn’t budge” he says.Consequently, he failed. “I was completely let down after that and thought about quitting. But several weeks later, I decided to give it another try. Luckily, I passed. The whole process was really costly and time consuming, but I guess it was all worth it. I learned my mistakes and, in some ways, I believe that experience will serve as a strong foundation for me to become a good driver,” he says.Those who wish to take a licence in the UAE will have to register with a driving institute. For light motor vehicles, students who don’t have any driving licence are considered a beginner and thus have to register for mandatory 40 classes that normally last 30 minutes. They can choose to register for either automatic or manual gear transmission.Students will have the option to choose either regular weekday classes or shift duty classes, or Friday classes or VIP classes, each is priced differently. Weekday classes are generally the least expensive. Training for manual-operated vehicles is also cheaper than automatic, but automatic licence holders are not eligible to drive a manual gear vehicle. The waiting time for classes can take days and 40 classes can last several weeks, so those who prefer the faster route may opt for VIP classes.The price and training structures may vary from one school to another, but At Emirates Driving Institute, beginners taking week day classes will pay a total of Dh5,270 for manual and Dh5,470 for automatic. I felt pretty bad tbh, my instructor was an a****t because she put on my receipt that I went over the speed limit and wasn't observing even though I was. She also started making rude and unnecessary comments. It made me not want to try anymore but after reading online on how many times people have failed the test and why, I saw that I wasn't the only one. So don't feel bad about it, not everyone gets it on their first try, just improve on the mistakes you know you made and be prepared for the next test.

She was driving a mid-nineties Buick Roadmaster eastbound at 53 mph in a 35 mph zone. I was headed westbound and locked her in on radar. I turned to follow and pulled in behind her with my lights and siren on, but she didn’t react, she was still driving at the same pace with me right behind her.After about a mile she finally pulled off on the side of the road. As I approached I noticed the telltale dents and scratches on the corners of the large Buick, indicating the elderly driver was losing the ability to regulate the car in tight spaces. She was in her early 80s, she was hostile and abrasive to deal with. She told me she wasn’t speeding, but she couldn’t tell me what the speed limit was on the road she was driving. It was a road she’d have to travel on every time she left her apartment. I gave her a speeding ticket.Later when I filed the ticket at the office I included a non-qualified driver exam report to be sent to the state. It always made me a little sad to fill out these forms because I was potentially, drastically altering someone’s life. I was asking the state to take this woman’s independence. He said his mother’s physician had told the state that his mom was no longer a safe driver, and the state had cancelled her driver’s license. Once that was done, the pastor’s sisters had been very helpful in finding a solution for his mother and helped secure a place for her at a local assisted living facility.
