Firstly, I’d like to remind everyone that DV is not limited to women. Many men suffer also.With that done I’ll offer you an example of a couple I know personally. I hope it’ll show you just how easy it is to fall into the pattern of abuse.The man in the relationship grew up seeing his mum get the odd backhander from his dad. She was never bruised per-se and she didn’t complain so he accepted it as normal.The woman in the relationship grew up being hit with either a hand or a belt as a means of discipline by her parents.Several months into their relationship he hit her for the first time. It was light and he was very very upset. It didn’t hurt her so she let it go. She knew she was in the wrong, so she just accepted it.Over the course of the next few years she was wrong more and more. The hitting became harder, the insults became more personal. Due to her nature though, she hit back. She thought of it as a fight. All couples fight don’t they?She never thought of herself as a victim. Aside from her parents she’d never seen the inner workings of a marriage. She had no point of reference.She began to spend time with friends from work. Friends who were also in a relationship. She noted that none of them had the same sort of relationship as she did. She began to do some research.Her research led her to understand that her relationship was considered abusive. She began to plan to leave. She also began martial arts training.He found out. That night he raped her. Several times. She was black and blue and for the first time had marks on her face.She left the next morning. Taking a few bags and getting a lift from a family friend as she hadn’t yet learned to drive.She never looked back and became an advocate for DV survivors.She’s me.Many many of the survivors I’ve worked with in the past have walked a very similar path.

Also I'm unsure of whether the children are considered minors so I will try to answer for both situations.If the children are minors - What I would do is call the police or children's aid society or equivalent. In Ontario where I live you are able to report anonymously to children's aid and they will jointly investigate. Keep in mind that you might want to use a phone that will not be traced back to you in case you're forced into testifying. Perhaps a payphone if you can find one.If that doesn't work and they demand your identity try to see if the police will allow you to anonymously give them a tip. Most of the time they will want to know who is telling them since it will help to have your testimony in court. Often police are very concerned with making sure they will have a solid case in court.If the children are adults - you will have to rely on contacting the police with the above advice. First call to see how much you can disclose without your identity and how far they can take this.If I knew what area you lived in I could try to offer support centers that might be able to provide your specific areas laws, rights and legal ramifications. It's never easy and yes disrupts everyone and there is an immense amount of upheaval that leads to uncertainty. Safest bet is to approach an Emergency Department of a hospital as they should be aware of what resources are available. The police is another good avenue but they often lack the knowledge of what to do after. Most have victim services departments but depending where you are there might be better resources after the perpetrator has been arrested. Often hospitals can facilitate bringing the police in to do statements.It also depends if you're reporting for yourself or someone else. Often if it's concern for someone else you might meet some brick walls.Where I live the hospital is the best bet (Ontario Canada) as we have teams to deal with everything in the comfort of settings that feel comfortable like a living room. Statements and photographs/records of injuries can be done there. The police can meet the victim there and do their thing plus we can establish safety plans.But please don't hesitate to report. Statistically things only escalate and if there's children involved it's especially important.Hospitals can also be a good place for someone to document injuries if they aren't ready to involve the police. So that there's a good amount of evidence ready when that decision is made. Just know that hospitals, doctors and nurses have a duty to report to the police if a child is harmed or violence takes place with a child living in the home.I hope that's useful. It is my understanding that the AMA (American Medical Association has made it part of their policy to suggest that the physician isn't made mandatory to report the domestic violence, like they are mandated to report the domestic violence abuse to the authorities, unless the victim does wish for the police to be called.  They are mandated to inform the domestic violence victim about the resources available to them, including providing them the number to the National Domestic Violence Hotline -  1-800-799-SAFE.I believe that this is following the principle that only the victim may know when it is truly safe for them to leave.  Leaving, too, can be an even more volatile event than staying sometimes.I believe that some hospitals choose to have policies that may be different than the guidelines set for the physicians by the AMA.

Trust me, I lived it, you are probably being scammed.
