Long-term, the customers were generally happy by our visible effort to try to fix mismatched expectations.Over the next couple years, I shuttled between BD and consulting as required by the business. I had to resist urge to over-promise because I knew I might be the one stuck delivering on those promises long after the salesperson had cashed the commission check.Now I’m a semi-independent consultant. EVERY project is a balance of making aggressive promises and defending my reputation on delivering on what was promised. I’ve had to leave in place awful code done by a previous consultant because it was outside the scope of the task.Other times I would do a “rip and replace” when I realize that the new functionality cannot live with the existing structure. I had one project recently where I ripped out a 10,000-line interface package, replacing it with 2,000 lines that did everything the old code did plus all the functions the customer had asked for. In the real-time code was checking to make sure core tables and their column data types hadn’t changed. Whaaaa? Those sorts of checks already happened in the batch code. After I was finished, the code ran much faster and did exactly what was needed—nothing more.I try to write for the long-game. But I can do just so much with time and budget constraints.
