Many years ago I was in business development. However, after several sales calls, the prospects turned into customers. I went from being the sales engineer to being the implementation consultant. It was a bit awkward trying to deliver what had been promised in the sales calls the year before. Several times we had to give away consulting hours to put in perceived existing features before the development team could roll out tested, packaged code. For the short-term, it was a money losing strategy. Long-term, the customers were generally happy by our visible effort to try to fix mismatched expectations.Over the next couple years, I shuttled between BD and consulting as required by the business. I had to resist urge to over-promise because I knew I might be the one stuck delivering on those promises long after the salesperson had cashed the commission check.Now I’m a semi-independent consultant. EVERY project is a balance of making aggressive promises and defending my reputation on delivering on what was promised. I’ve had to leave in place awful code done by a previous consultant because it was outside the scope of the task.Other times I would do a “rip and replace” when I realize that the new functionality cannot live with the existing structure. I had one project recently where I ripped out a 10,000-line interface package, replacing it with 2,000 lines that did everything the old code did plus all the functions the customer had asked for. In the real-time code was checking to make sure core tables and their column data types hadn’t changed. Whaaaa? Those sorts of checks already happened in the batch code. After I was finished, the code ran much faster and did exactly what was needed—nothing more.I try to write for the long-game. But I can do just so much with time and budget constraints.

How can one become a soft skill trainer without any certification in India?As the famous old saying goes, “The proof of the pudding is in the eating”, and not on its labels.Likewise, even though a certification in training might help you in getting assignments initially, in due course, it is your inherent worth as a powerful trainer that is going to get you further and long term engagements.Preferably first you must associate yourself with some reputed training institute or academy which is offering soft skill training to individuals and corporate employees, and establish your reputation as an efficient trainer during your tenure there . This will help you gain a lot of self confidence as well as market recognition.You must select the Soft Skills which are most needed in the market today and equip yourself with enough resources to effectively deliver training sessions in these topics.To get a really worth while in-depth knowledge in many of these Soft Skills you may have to read at least 3 to 4 really good books in each of these topics written by SME’s (Subject Matter Experts) in their respective domains, not to mention about the valuable Practical Experience you must gain before you can confidently share your valuable resource in these subjects with your candidates.
