People pay into this system all their lives, when they need it most, someone on the economic far right gets elected and cuts the program.Why? “fiscal conservatism”. Except we cut taxes for billionaires who are prospering, while we’re at war, while the budget is not balanced, while we’re not in a depression, while the economy is growing, while the DOW has never been higher, and unemployment is moderately low. That’s not fiscal conservatism, that is radical extremism and crony capitalism.There’s no need. It’s pure greed. These are not sane and rational and reasonable principles at work here. This is a travesty.Not to mention, I can find countries with far more robust and comprehensive welfare systems (like Norway) whose budget is balanced, whose economy is strong, whose unemployment is lower than ours, workforce participation is higher than ours. They can easily afford those programs, and so can Canada, the UK, Australia, Spain, New Zealand, France, Denmark, Italy, Sweden, Finland…I can prove we don’t need to cut these programs at all, in fact we can and should expand them, and we would still have a better economy than we do now, and a better budget than we do now.It’s a false choice that we must cut these vital programs that help millions of people, or we’ll never have growth. Those other even more left wing countries have growth, in fact, better growth. Why can’t “USA number one” do what these poorer countries do?Meanwhile, we make tanks we don’t even use, we just put in a surplus yard. If you wanted to cut programs, why would you start with the most vital? And why should we be cutting programs, when we’ve been lowering taxes for 40 years to “stimulate growth”, leading to multiple recessions and spikes in unemployment because people relied on government spending and government jobs and those things were cut?Why not just put taxes back where they were when we could afford these programs, and cut unnecessary spending until the budget is balanced? Leave spending for the very poorest alone.Why not stop giving tax breaks to oil companies and giving federal subsidies to profitable industries? Why not raise the minimum wage, so fewer working poor don’t need to also collect welfare while they work 40 hours a week just to pay the bare minimum in rent and food? Stop subsidizing cheap labor, make their employers pay them what it costs to have a worker in that area.Stop giving corporate welfare to employers who just use it to line their pockets. Instead, only spend money on the people who need it the most, the people left behind by the market, and let the market take care of the rest like it is supposed to.No tax breaks for billionaires, no subsidies to profitable businesses, no corporate welfare, no bailouts for the super rich.
