How long does it usually take to do the alternative route to get a teacher certification?
As with all things education, it depends on the state. Since I teach in Arizona, I can really only speak to what it takes in Arizona. So in Arizona, you have a couple options.A post-bachelor’s degree in education is considered an alternate route. If you take that route, it can take several years (My Master’s will take me 2.5 years when all is said and done, but I’m also teaching full time while doing it, so it’s taking longer). Others might do it in less than that amount of time, others may do it in more.Arizona allows people who have a Master’s degree in a content area to bypass examination requirements for that content area. However, I don’t believe it allows them to bypass the professional knowledge exam, so there might be more to that one. With this path, it might take no time at all, if you have the Master’s in the content area, it might take very little time, only a couple months.Arizona currently allows people who have experience in a certain field to teach that subject even if they don’t have the classical teaching training that is usually required to teach. So for example, if you spend 20 years working as an economist, you can be certified to teach math and econ. If I recall, it’s a pretty small amount of experience, something like 5 years in a field. This path only applies to normally certifiable content areas that you’d take a test for, and don’t apply to areas that don’t have a test.To be certified in CTE areas (or areas that don’t have exams), you can show either 6,000 hours of experience in a field, or 24 college credits in that area. So if you wanted to teach a cooking class, you could show 6,000 hours working for a company that deals in food service (in any position [I have a coworker who was an accountant for a food service company and is able to teach a cooking class at the middle school level]) you can be certified to teach. You can also show 24 credit hours in cooking classes.I think for AZ, I got all of them. Varying amounts of time go into meeting each of these alternate paths of certification. I think the longest ones involve the dedicated Master’s degrees, which can take several years and include student teaching.
