Dr. Marguerite Ross Barnett was the first African-American and woman president of the University of Houston. In her short term, she furthered the university's ties to the Greater Houston community as a model of excellence and cooperation. Born in 1942 in Virginia, Marguerite grew up in Buffalo, New York. In 1964, she received her bachelor's in political science at Antioch College and earned her master's and doctorate at the University of Chicago, where she began her teaching career. She would go on to teach at Princeton, Howard and Columbia Universities. Barnett's book on South Asian Indian politics won top prize from the American Political Science Association. In 1983, she served as Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs at the City University of New York system. In 1986, she became the Chancellor of the University of Missouri, St Louis. She was nominated by a University of Houston presidential search committee and forwarded to the Board of Trustees. W
