Gridlock. Most urban motorists are all too familiar with the delays and frustration of stop-and-go, bumper-to-bumper traffic. But congestion has other negative effects besides headaches for commuters and urban planners: increased pollution, a greater likelihood of crashes, interference with emergency services, and delays and disruptions that have a real impact on the economy. A partnership made up of University of Minnesota researchers and local, state, and federal government agencies hopes to tackle the congestion challenge by implementing cutting-edge technologies along the first bus rapid-transit corridor in the Twin Cities metro area. On freeways between Apple Valley and downtown Minneapolis, new express lanes, electronic signage, and 10 futuristic buses are being tested to improve transit times and traffic flow.
