There's an agreed upon global strategy to stop TB. It's been called in the past the DOTS strategy and basically it aims to find people with TB and cure them. Since 1995 when this strategy was rolled out, more than 46 millin persons have been cured, and about 6 million lives have been saved. But we still have a lot more to do. We still have 9 million persons every year suffering with tuberculosis and about 2 million deaths every year. That's 2 million deaths too many that could be stopped if we sustain the efforts in the strategy against TB. We need to acknowledge that the strategy is at times labor intensive and that's also why we need to invest in the research that's going to yield the innovative tools that would shorten the treatment, would make the diagnosis faster, and might even give us a vaccine so that we can really get rid of the disease for once and for all.
