What will the impact of AI be on the marketing industry?
Excellent question! There are already signs of changes in the marketing practice caused by the growing adoption of smart technology. Have you ever seen a soldier roast an officer with a higher rank?
This was not an Officer but a 1SGT.I was a Squad Leader of a Military Police Platoon in the ’80s and I had this PFC Smith [not his real name] in my squad. He never got along with the 1SGT from day one. The PFC was an older man… actually older then the other men in the company. I noticed the problem and tried to talk to him from the first time.He would rack up merit points and get promoted to Sp4 then promoted to SGT. E-5 that night he would pick out another NCO and bust him upside the head, get demoted and this kept going. One day he announced that he filed his papers and was retiring from 20 years of uninterrupted service! On the last day, the retiree could wear the highest rank that they achieved. The Sp4 walked in and the only thing I seen was a black stripe on a set of a Class A uniform. Someone called ‘ATTENTION !’ and we snapped to. The 1SGT was talking to me and when he turned and seen the ‘OFFICER’ he went APE$HIT! He ran over and screamed at ‘COLONEL SMITH’, yes he had eagles on his shoulders. He was ripping Smith a new one, the whole time Smith was standing at attention with a ‘Gomer Pyle smirk’ then they went in the top SGT.’s office as the 1SGT. told him that ‘impersonating an officer’ was the charge he was getting. The bay was called to attention again as our Captain walked in. We all heard the commotion in the inner office and the Capt. walk up and called for the 1SGT. Both, came out! The Capt. snapped to attention and said, “SIR, I’m glad the Colonel stopped by on the Colonel’s last day! ..Will the Colonel join the 1SGT and myself in my office, Sir?”… The 1SGT had a perplexed look and followed the Colonel in. The Capt. closed the door and then opened it about three inches. We heard ALL that was said, the Capt. said, “Sir, is there anything that you would like to say..to the 1SGT before you leave today??” The Colonel TORE INTO SOME OF THE BEST ASS CHEWING I EVER HEARD!!!… BOTOM LINE: The Captain informed the 1SGT. of the following :The Colonel was in the Vietnam War. He was a SGT and with the four others, ranging from Private-Corporal, were sent out on a recon mission for their Field Artillery Battery. While they were out in the bush, two batteries of FA were over ran, every man killed. When they returned they seen the aftermath and seen the enemy. They manned each gun and fired HE and ‘B’ HIVE rounds. Loaded and fired each by themselves.HE are High Explosive and ‘B’ Hive are air burst rounds that disburse DART like projectiles. They continued firing all at the enemy until reinforcements arrived. They ALL received the Silver Star!A Major General issued ‘BATTLE-FIELD COMMISSIONS’ that day. The SGT (PFC SMITH) was ‘Promoted to COLONEL the others Majors and Captains.I spoke with the Col. later and he told me that every time when he was promoted to his ‘formal’ rank, he would get pissed off (when he returned State side- had to go back to his former rank of SGT) thinking about what happened he would belt the nearest NCO! … He laughed when he said he seen me a few times, but said he liked me to much to do that!He said his retirement pension would be of one grade higher- SSGT then the SGT he was. The Colonel was stamped ‘TEMP’ on his DD-214 and listed Staff Sergeant as his rank.

Could someone impersonate a sailor and go out on deployment on a US Navy ship?
My first reaction to this is “Why the hell would you want to?” You’d have to be out of your goddamned mind to willingly get underway on a US Navy ship if you didn’t have to.It’s not a Princess Cruise. You’re gonna be working your ass off 12,16,18 hours or more a day especially if you’re serving aboard a carrier so why in holy hell would you want to impersonate that life and especially NOT get paid for it?But let’s say you’re a masochistic son-of-a-bitch…When you arrive to the ship you are to present yourself in a clean, proper, complete uniform with a copy of your original orders, your Record of Emergency Data (AKA the Page 2) and a filled out Single Group Life Insurance (SGLI) form which you will have to get from the Personnel Support Detachment (PSD).That right there is a tall order. Since you’re not a Sailor, only impersonating one, you’d have to know how Navy orders are cut (formatted), what a Page 2 is, what the proper SGLI form the Navy uses on top of having a identification card that can pass muster. You’re also going to need a clean, proper and complete uniform set - I did mention that earlier. You’re also going to have to have intimate knowledge of Navy customs and traditions which are many, varied and much too detailed to go into at the time.Basically, if you don’t know how to conduct yourself as a sailor aboard ship you’re going to stick out like a sore thumb real fast and you’re going to get caught. If you don’t know port from starboard, fore from aft…you’re cooked. If you salute the Chief and not the Ensign…you’re cooked. If you wear your cover indoors…you’re cooked. If you have no idea what a cover is…you’re cooked. But let’s say you can manage all that - that somehow (and God only knows why) you’re clever enough to cobble together a convincing cover to get yourself onboard a Navy ship.Well, congratulations, but you’re in the wrong line of work and your kind of deception would be better suited for the CIA because you’re exactly the kind of goddamned genius they’d kill to have in covert ops.

How does it feel to be extremely poor?
When I was very young and my parents were still married, we lived in a house. My dad would start projects but not finish them so in mine and my two brothers' bedroom(it was really a living room but we had only one bedroom and my parents had that), half of the walls from a project he started but did not finish were drywall and the bones of the wall but no insulation. So in the winter it was freezing all the time and we lived in Michigan which made it worse. At one point in time we were so down on our luck that we only had cans of kidney beans to eat. To this day I cannot eat those, chili, or goulash because that's frequently all we had the money to buy ingredients for. I can't eat bologna anymore either for the same reasons. There were cockroaches everywhere. There was trash everywhere, piled high to the ceiling in the kitchen. The kitchen was never clean. My mother worked nonstop but while my father worked, it was rare that he worked consistently. He just expected my mother to do everything. We knew no better. There was rarely enough food for five people but plenty of roaches all over our house. We live in NC now and I had panic attacks nonstop when we first moved here because there were roaches everywhere. It took me a long time not to freak out every time I saw a roach. The bathroom was another project he began but didn't finish. Then there wasn't any money to finish it. So the toilet really didn't work and we bathed in sponge baths from the sink. After they divorced and my father moved away, we moved back from the domestic violence shelter to that same house. My mother was once again the only bread winner and that winter she couldn't pay the heating bill and we barely had enough to eat. Most of what we received was from food banks. We spent all winter huddled up in blankets, drinking hot cocoa when we had it. Until I made friends with people who were better off, I didn't know that people could have enough food or heat or money for an entire month. I'd never had that.My mother got a better paying job so we moved away from that dilapidated house. We moved to an apartment and while she was so proud of our clean home, I was so embarrassed. We lived in a small town and there were only two small apartment complexes. I knew of maybe two other people who were my age who lived in apartments but everyone else had their own home. I felt like we had downgraded from a house of our own to an apartment. I wasn't old enough to understand that the house was falling apart, it was disgusting, and not fit for humans to live there. However the apartment was safe, clean, and warm if a bit plain and small. I was embarrassed I had to share a room with my mother and envious my younger brother had a room to himself. None of my friends had to share a room with their parent(s).I once off handedly mentioned in a grocery store to my friend's mother that we didn't have any food until next payday which was over a week away. She'd seen me looking wistfully at precooked food in the store. She, in an extremely gracious and kind moment, bought us groceries for the next week, walking me through the store asking what we usually bought. I was scared because my mother had taught me not to ask for money or charity from others, she was very proud. She secretly scolded me for mentioning how badly off we were but hugged me to her and I could feel her relief. We used to have what my mom called picnics in our living room. She would lay her special blanket on the floor, making nachos piled high with hamburger and cheese but we could only afford to do this maybe twice a month, if that. This was a big deal to me and my brother and mother and were some of the happiest times I can remember from that period in my life.Getting fresh fruit from the store was a huge treat for me because we could not afford to get fresh fruit all the time. So the fruit was my reward for very good behavior. I didn't want candy for a reward, I always wanted fresh fruit bowls of pre-cut fruit from the store. They were always gone by the time we would get home from the store.I was embarrassed, and I remember my mother being embarrassed too, when we had to go to the store and use what little food stamps we could get. It was as if it was super shameful to be getting assistance we so desperately needed. Those shopping trips were always extremely tense and we just tried to make them go as quickly as possible.Getting free lunch at school was also embarrassing for me. The lunch ladies would look at me with such pity and some of them with disgust? I could never interpret that look as anything but disgust. I felt ashamed that we couldn't pay for our lunches like other kids and I tried very hard to keep the fact that I was on the free lunch program on the DL. I didn't want my friends to know and the people who did find out were cruel. My brother and I learned how to find awesome clothes from K-mart and Walmart. I remember a back to school shopping trip to Walmart where my mother's check bounced, despite the money being in the account, and we left our clothes there and walked to our car. My mother sat down and cried. My brother and I just hugged her and cried with her. It was embarrassing and we felt humiliated and ashamed. My mother kept apologizing and apologizing and we tried to assure her it was okay and we would be okay. We went back a few days later, once everything with the bank was worked out; and got our stuff but it was a terribly sad experience. It feels isolating, frightening, and depressing to be poor. My mother worked hard and has worked hard her entire life but has only moderately gotten ahead of where she used to be. I went through a similar experience with poverty before my husband got the job he has now. The feelings of being poor were no different as an adult. The feelings of never having enough between paychecks, worrying about rent and utilities and gas and food and whether your children will have enough to eat, have everything they need, praying there are no emergencies because you have no savings, borrowing money from family and feeling ashamed that you cannot make it on your own, budgeting and budgeting until you can find no extra cash to get food or gas, etc. I remember the desperation clearly. I remember feeling hungry and never having enough to eat. It causes me some anxiety now if I feel we are getting close to that line between enough to eat, if tight and not able to pay all of our bills. Then it becomes a choice between this bill being paid now and having enough to eat all month. But we are doing better overall and I hope never to be that poor again.Edit: I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of love, kindness, and compassion this post has generated! Thank you so much! I have cried reading the replies of folks who have gone through this or worse and I feel for all of you. It is awful being poor and I hope never to be in that situation again. I hope the same for everyone who has gone through this. It does make you feel like there is some character flaw, like you've brought this on yourself when you're doing everything you possibly can to provide for yourself and your loved ones. My mother was a superhero and is still doing hard factory work to this day and she's about to be 61. I worry for her doing that work all the time but she has no choice. She remarried about 15 years ago and they do marginally better than she did when I was a kid. But she worked hard to provide for my younger brother and I and I'm grateful for her. I admire the mothers and fathers who work hard to provide for their families despite the hard times they go through. My love and gratitude to everyone who commented showing me I was not alone in my experiences.

What is it like to complete your final PhD defense? What happened and how did it feel?
I sat on the couch, clutching my iPhone tightly. I had just completed my oral defense and my heart was still racing a thousand beats per minute. My palms were sweaty, I mused, in an effort to pass the time. At the completion of my presentation and Q&A round, I was asked by my mentor to step off the call. I knew they were discussing my research, my findings, my responses to their questions, my presentation, and were working together to make an informed mutual decision. It would only take objections from one committee member to halt my progress and end my journey towards my end state goal. I didn't realize that the clock on our family room wall ticked so loudly until I sat there on the couch in excruciating silence, waiting for the inevitable call. Each tick was a reminder that time was not standing still, though it felt like an eternal wait. A thousand questions raced through my mind. Did they like my presentation? Was my research good enough? Did my last "So What?" slide hammer home the final message that my findings were valid and reliable? Did I answer their questions to their satisfaction? Did I leave anything important out? Did my mentor remember my phone number? Should I call him back? Could I live up to the title of "Doctor" that I had fought to earn? What would my family say if I failed? The ring on my phone was startling. It brought me back from the depths of my darkest fears, thoughts, and concerns. I pressed the answer button and raised the device to my ear. It felt weighted down by the intensity of my emotions, if that were even possible. "Hello, this is Aaron." I slowly stated. After what seemed like several minutes, though was probably only a split second instance, I heard the most wonderful six words stated back to me by my mentor, "Congratulations Dr. Wester, you earned it."At that moment, I was overwhelmed, happy, elated, excited, shaking, and terribly tense. I had survived one of the most difficult experiences of my 38 years of existence on this earth, 3rd only to asking my wife to marry me, and being told by hospital staff that we could take our newborn first child home without being provided any additional guidance, instructions, or "Parenting Guide for Dummies" book. I had survived almost 5 years of dedicated doctoral level research and statistics, quality reviews, respondent surveying, and more writing than I had ever done previous on a dissertation that spanned over 600 pages of meticulous study, analysis, and intricate synthesis. Such a flood of emotion that no dam could suppress. An intensity of feelings that suddenly caught me off guard. Suddenly, I found myself in tears. Not of pain, but of joy, gladness, and relief. I couldn't help but think, 'what a wonderful way to complete this journey after years of intensive study and diligent effort, and a day before my 39th birthday no less'. So regardless of where you are in your educational journey, consider this to be proof that a doctoral degree is within your grasp if you but signNow with all your effort and your best foot forward. People would tell me there's light at the end of tunnel when things looked darkest, but I didn't believe them - I could have sworn they had to be referring to an oncoming train. Not so, I discovered. Instead, I found that the light at the end is an incredibly brilliant and long lasting rainbow of accomplishment beyond description - so work hard, because it's worth the view. ;-)After receiving the news, I immediately called my wife who relayed to our youngest 6 year old son. He asked "Does that mean that Daddy gets to go to the Doctor building and help people?", to which she replied "No honey, he's the other kind of doctor, the kind that doesn't help people". We laughed as we were caught in the moment. She had been through the trials and tears, the pain, and the hardships over the last several years that when combined, were the essential core ingredients of my educational journey. She understood, and she shared in the moment with love and respect. I hadn't made it, instead we had made it together as a family. I immediately posted on Facebook, Google Plus, and Twitter after hanging up with her. I Instant Messaged my friends, and called my parents. It was a good day, and a signNow accomplishment in my life. Of all my Facebook posts, it received the most number of "likes" I've seen yet. This reminded me that I was loved and supported by amazing individuals all over the world. I'm now greatly looking forward to publishing my completed and publication ready dissertation entitled "Readers' Trust, Socio-Demographics, and Acuity Influences in Citizen Journalism Credibility for Disrupted Online Newspapers"More importantly, I'm looking forward to tomorrow. I have fond memories of yesterday, and today is the best day so far, but I'm positive that tomorrow will be even better. :-)Dr. Aaron M. Wester, PhD

How perfect is roundness in a neutron star?
That a neutron star has a fractal like surface is extremely unlikely, due to the extreme gravitational potentials that exist. The surface gravity may be approaching [math]10^{11} g[/math]. It's high enough that general relativistic corrections matter in fact, making the gravity even stronger. The gravitational redshift at the surface probably approaches 10%.Delicate self-similar scale invariant structures such as fractals simply could not hold up against such strong gravity. Small structures would tend to break under the gravity - since the higher surface to volume ratio makes them weaker and favours them breaking and then piling up on top of each other, thus reducing the overall height and increasing the binding energy.Yet neutron stars are probably not completely round, which is to say, they are not completely spherical. But the scale along the circumference at the surface of the largest deviations from sphericity must be very large, and the elevations also small. The first few meters up to the first few hundred meters of the surface of a neutron star consist almost certainly of a highly degenerate electron gas containing a one component plasma of finite nuclei that are however completely ionized by high temperature and pressure.Densities in the upper crust would be on the order of [math]10^{13}\text{gm/cm^3}[/math], so that atomic nuclei would occupy less volume than the total. As one goes deeper and deeper into the crust, which might extend to a kilometer or so deep, those nuclei would be expected to become larger and larger on average and more neutron rich, and free neutrons would begin to fill the space between the nuclei. At the bottom of the crust, probably on the order of 1 km or so inside the star, densities would approach [math]10^{14} \text{gm/cm^3}[/math], so that nuclei would be taking most of the space. It is thought that the nuclei may form a crystalline structure in the crust with a basic body centered cubic structure, which minimizes Coulomb repulsion between the positively charged nuclei. But this is to some extent a guess. Pressure and density are clearly enormously high making any estimates of the breaking strain of such a solid crystalline crust extremely uncertain. But the breaking strain of the crust is what determines the maximum possible deviation from sphericity, that is from the equality of all three moments of inertia of the star, by comparison with the gravitational strain.Theoretical estimates of various kinds have been done, and some suggest that the overall asphericity of a neutron star might approach as much as a 2-3 parts in a million. This would mean for a canonical neutron star radius of 20 km that the "mountains" might approach as much as 5 cm in height. These mountains would be enormously large at their bases in comparison to the size of the neutron star so it would be more like an overall deformation of the shape away from spherical than a tiny little bump a few cm high and a few cm wide.On smaller scales, right near the very surface of the crust, the state of the matter could be different than deep in the crust and it's conceivable that there could be tiny ripples there on much smaller scales, with heights topping out at 5 mm or so. But these would not signNowly affect the asphericity. It has been hypothesized that the sudden shifts in pulsar frequencies that are sometimes observed, are the result of the collapse of such "mountains" in the crust, causing neutron star "quakes" that change the moments of inertia of the star and thus affect its rotation. But the modelling of this physics is so tough that I do not believe it can be said that the phenomena are really understood.
