Procter & Gamble has always been extremely traditionalist with branding, and never relied on texting acronyms or other tools to target the younger demographics.However, on a second thought, it is a brilliant move. Locking acronyms that appeal to millennials, and trademark them to be the only company able to use them is a brilliant move from a marketing/branding standpoint. A product called “OMG Fairy!” will likely be more memorable to the average consumer than most competitor brands.However, I personally feel that having a corporation being able to trademark something so generic, even if the applications are limited to a certain sector, sets a very dangerous precedent. It would basically give carte blanche to other corporation looking to trademark similarly generic words and acronyms.
