First thing first “Finalizing the Visa Consulate”:If you are planning to tour more than two countries in the Schengen area then apply for visa to the embassy/consulate of the country you will be residing in for most of the travelling days, often referred as the main destination. If two countries have the same number of days then choose the one where you are planning to land or exit.In case you do not have a fixed itinerary (not recommended, though), and you plan to visit several countries in the Schengen area randomly, then apply to the embassy/consulate of the country which you are entering first.Since now you know which embassy you need to apply, next is how to apply and what are the documents required.Long trail of documentation:The most painful part is this, where you need to prepare the documentation. I will keep the checklist simple and provide rationale on why they ask for the particular document which will help you understand the significance of it and you can produce a substitute, if possible and required1) Valid passport (issued within the last 10 years and with at least 3 months validity after the scheduled return; passports with observations regarding the front data page are no accepted) with at least two empty pages Nothing much to say, of course you need a valid passport. Since the maximum stay with a Schengen visa can be of 90 days, so 3 months validity is required on the passport. Two blank pages, because one will have Visa sticker and the other page will have Indian immigration stamps and the stamps from the Schengen country where you are landing and exiting.2) 2 passport pictures according to biometric specifications, not older than 6 months Go to the studio and get a photo of the dimension 35 mm in length and 45 mm in height. Your face (the start of the hairline in the forehead till end of your chin) should be between 32 mm to 36 mm. Get the photo in a light background, white is preferred. Detailed information can be obtained here Cheap Tip: Do not go to any fancy studio and spend a bomb on just the photo. The consulate needs a clean and clear photo with the above mentioned specifications (which are very general) and not for featuring you as a playboy model, so save the buck.3) Leave letter of your company (if employed)This letter serves as a proof of return to your own country, so make sure the letter clearly states your designation, since when you are working with the company, leave dates (mandatorily covering your entire stay), date on which you will resume your duties.No-objection certificate of school or university (if student) This is pretty much same as the above.4) Proof of financial status If employed:Payslips of the past three months / employment contract Provide either of them, not both. Provide three latest Payslips, as it clearly states how much you are earning and if you are capable of surviving a European trip. This document helps the Visa officer gauge your financial status and also validates that the money earned is legal.If self-employed:Certificate of Proprietorship or other proof of ownership (proof of land title, proof of income from agriculture (sales form) etc.) 5) Income Tax Return (ITR) form or Form 16(Certificate of Income Tax deducted at the source of salary)It ensures that all the fund in your bank account is earned legally. Though my experience is that, they hardly care how you have earned the money. If they see there is enough fund available in your account then they are fine.6) Personal bank statement of the past three months with sufficient fundsHere they look into couple of things; first, money in your account is sufficient to cover your entire stay in Schengen area during your travel period. Second, the fund has not been deposited all of a sudden to inflate the available balance. I have written below in detail on how much you should show in your bank account, so keep reading. The bank account statement can be online, but make sure it is a bank statement with details of transaction and not just an account summary. You can show travelers cards (with statement stating available balance), credit card statement, and fixed deposits in your name or joint accounts. If anyone is sponsoring you (like your father or mother), a sponsoring letter addressed to the consulate from him/her and his/her bank statement for last 3 months.7) Proof of accommodation for your entire stay in the Schengen area.This is vital, I have read and heard personal experiences where the Visa has been cancelled due to discrepancy in accommodation arrangements. Make sure you have confirmed hotel bookings with details of the property owner/manager and property details (address). If you are staying at friends/relatives place then copy of their passport (with valid residence permit, in case of non-EU citizen) and an invitation mail will be sufficient as long as you are sponsoring your own stay.8) Flight and transport reservation Again, very vital. Many applications got rejected because of fake bookings. DO NOT make a fake reservation. Search for flights which has minimal cancellation charges and book your flights well ahead of travel date (45-60 days prior) to get a good deal. If you are travelling within Schengen countries then it is advised to show them train/bus bookings for inter-nation travel. One need not show travel details within the country, say if you are travelling within Italy (Rome to Florence) then need not show prior bookings. But if you are travelling from Italy to Switzerland then it is advised to show a confirmed booking.9) Travel Insurance Vital to get visa and also for your own sake. If something unwanted happens and you need to avail medical services then you will be ripped off everything as healthcare is expensive in whole of Europe. The travel insurance must cover Euro 30, 000.00 in case of hospitalization and must cover emergency medical evacuation and repatriation of remains. The list of approved travel insurance companies can be fetched here.10) Proof of civil status Marriage certificate, birth certificate of children, death certificate of spouse, ration card if applicable or Aadhaar Card.11) 1 copy of your passport’s data page Print the first two pages and last two pages of your passport in an A4 size paper.12) Residency proof, if address in the passport falls outside the jurisdiction region of the consulate: Which consulate or which region you can apply? You can apply at the region (North, South, East or West) where you are residing for last 6 months.This is something none of the blogs available in the internet have mentioned clearly. In case you are a domicile of different region and applying at a different region (domicile of Uttar Pradesh, North and working in Bangalore, South for last 3 years), or simply if the address mentioned in your passport does not fall under the jurisdiction region of then consulate then you need to provide either a copy of your rent agreement, or a letter from your company HR clearly mentioning your address or some utility bill (electricity, water or telephone bill).13) Duly filled application form Kept at last, because it is important. You can either fill an online application (recommended) or also can fill an offline application. German consulate online application can be filled here , similarly other Countries’ application form can be found in the respective VFS website. Self-Declaration Form can be found here, required only for German consulate. It is recommended to fill the online application form, it not only saves time at the application center but also legibility is better than the handwritten one.14) Cover Letter A letter addressed to the consulate you are applying. I started my preparation just after I filled up the application.My preparation startegy are as followEnglish: Honestly didn't even have a book of this subject, no practice at all. But always the most scoring section for me. Because I read alot of articles, I mean a lot. That helped me to spot errors easily without even knowing what kind of rules were being applied.Descriptive: Hadn't even for once typed a letter or essay on a computer. Typing on the mains exam day was my 1st. But here too my article reading habit helped me. Scored 17/25.Quantitative: My base was strong and every concept was clear to me. But I know myself that even if I put my serious efforts in this section I could have scored 20 at best. So, I relied on this section just for the sectional cutoff.Reasoning: My hard work and practice were on this section. Seriously I practiced puzzles a lot. Every puzzles I could get my hands on. And that helped me in making this section a scoring one.Banking Awareness: haha.... couldn't give any suggestions on this.Summing up, I relied hugely on English and Reasoning. So, identify your strong area and polish it so well that it shine very brightly.Luckily in my 1st attempt I attended interview and hopefull to make it into the final list.Cleared prelims with just .75 marks above the cutoff.Cleared mains with 84.88 marks.P.S.I'm someone who took 6 years to graduate with just 45.9% (3rd Division).Edit:Luckily got BOI my 2nd choice.And freakishly shocked with my interview marks. Got 70.95/100 . My interview was not that good. Didn't even know abbreviation of SIDBI, examples of MSME and many more ….I think they mostly gave marks for my confidence and jolly nature shown in the interview.

So it was a really, really, tough nut to crack!That being said, it was definitely achievable.  With a good plan in mind, it’s possible to crack this exam in 2-3 months. Practice is the key.Being an IT employee, it was a little troublesome for me to appear in paper-and-pen mock tests. I had to be in office on weekends. But “getting digital is the way”.However, the hardest part for me was not the preparation or the exam time. It was the stress that I had to deal with and the wait for results. #2. LEARN TO MANAGE YOUR TIME WELLSBI PO 2015 was a test of time. How did you manage it?Mocks! Loads of them! This exam is not just about knowing what to attempt but also about identifying what to skip. You must have the ability to glance through the question and be able to skip it if it seems too lengthy. I always started off with English because I was aware of the fact that this section is a score booster. I always wanted to answer it with a fresh mind to maximize my score. It allowed me to minimize silly mistakes. To figure out how much time to devote to each section, I solved previous years’ question papers. While writing mock tests I stuck to this approximate time limit for each section, no matter how many questions I was able to attempt.Working under deadlines also helped me a lot. I started to enjoy pressure. In fact, I give my best when I am under pressure. But, SBI PO is hardly a cakewalk. I tried to make a balance by choosing an effective way online. FIND THE CORRECT PRELIMS STRATEGYWhat strategy did you apply in the days leading up to prelims?First of all, I glanced through previous years’ questions. From this I got an idea about the major topics asked. Then I took all the free Mock Test provided by Testbook. Then I finished the major topics which were less time consuming but were more scoring. I completed all this inside a month and started giving the remaining mock tests.I gave as many mock tests as possible. I solved anywhere from one test per day to three per day. This number shot up to 5-7 mock tests in the last 5 days before prelims. This helped me to be in the rhythm of solving questions. All the while, I did not focus on a single subject but all three at the same time.Analysis of Mocks was the most important part. I went through all the solutions for all questions. I went through the analysis of my performance to understand where I needed to improve. I also avoided those tests that were being difficult for the sake of it. Good marks in mock tests helped build my confidence.#4. GET SUFFICIENT PRACTICEWhat do you think is the optimum number of mock tests one should take to prepare for the exam? Is it advisable to take more number of sectional tests or full lengths?There is no optimum number. There’s no point in solving mocks if you don’t keep track of your shortcomings and improve them. But I solved more than 20-25 tests for Mains and same for prelims. Your number will vary – take mock tests till you are confident enough to face the exams. Confident means till you start to score 10-15 marks more than previous year’s cutoff.Both sectional and full length tests have their own merits. It would be better to attempt few sectional tests before full tests to get comfortable with each section. Then attempt full length tests. To improve your strategy in any one section, come back to sectional tests. Sectional tests are also easy to practice because one may not like to invest 1 hour at a time. You can invest 20 minutes and can finish the task in intervals. Sectional tests also improve time management because you are restricted to use only 20 minutes.#6. MAKE AN OVERALL PLANHow did you tackle the whole syllabus?It is practically impossible to attempt 200 questions. In fact, I found it difficult to read even 150 questions. So I first identified which topics have to be completely left out. Then I identified some topics like Syllogisms, Input-Output, Inequalities, Quadratic Equations etc. which are easy and can be done with good speed. This is how the syllabus has to be managed. Eventually, get to the tougher chapters.#7. BETTER YOUR STRATEGY FOR MAINS AFTER PRELIMSWhat strategy did you apply in the days leading up to Mains?I analysed my Prelims performance and figured out what was lacking. I worked on my problem areas to make sure I did not get stuck in the same places.Mains require even more practice. Calculation speed has to be blazing fast so worked upon it. I learnt some quick calculation techniques. Tried to read newspapers at a fast pace with understanding to attempt passage questions in minimum time.I gave even more Mock tests and read General Awareness capsules. I gave 2 tests per day for mains, and I analysed each test and went through the solutions after. I studied current affairs and banking awareness in the time in between.Apart from all these, I am grateful to some of my friends who were the part and parcel of my journey to SBI. I created a whatsapp group and kept adding guys with similar mindsets. We discussed whatever questions we got stuck on. This not only created a great bond amongst us but also enriched our knowledge.
