I 600 Form to Print

Back in 1991, before Ancestry dot com was a thing, I got interested in genealogy… my family’s, in particular. So, I set out on a mission to find out all I could, and put together a family tree. Less than two years after the World Wide Web was created (aka: WWW). So, I wasn’t really on the internet yet. I had to do it old skool; although I did use a computer to draw the actual “tree”, as there were no genealogical tree templates that I knew of, yet. I sent out a form letter to every single person I knew, who was even remotely related to me. I even had to take a quick crash course in Russian Cyrillic, so that I could communicate with my relatives behind the Iron Curtain (which was half of them, in various countries). The curtain fell the following year, which made communication much easier, but at the time, I wasn’t even sure if any of my correspondence would get there and back. Amazingly, it all did. I sent out these form letters with pre-drawn, empty “trees”, for everyone to fill out. I also included a self-addressed stamped envelope, to make things as easy as possible for everyone.By the autumn of that year, I had received nearly all my templates back, all filled out as best as everyone could manage. Then began the task of making sense out of all of them, and compiling them into one massive tree. I ended up with nearly 600 people to list. For every person, I listed 6 bits of information: Name, place & year of birth, place & year of death, and their occupation. It took me about 6 months, but by Christmas, I had a surprisingly full family tree. I printed these all out on 17″ x 24″ sheets of parchment, rolled them up into scrolls, and handed them out to everybody as Christmas gifts. It was a big hit, as no one had ever seen the big picture yet. This is my Pociask Family Tree:This was in 1991, so I suggested everyone add to their branches by hand, as the years go by. By now, there are probably another 100 or more kids and grand-kids born. But that’s me, in the lower-right corner, above the block of text. I drew a chain of heavy links around the whole thing to signify that we were all linked together.The furthest back I got for my lineage was 1796, in Prussia. My great-great-great grandfather, with the last name of Busz, was born there. This part of Prussia had previously been part of the Polish Kingdom, and afterwards, once again became part of Poland after WWII. They eventually moved to the Kingdom of Bohemia, which became Czechoslovakia. My four grandparent's lineages basically hailed from 4 places: Prussia/Bohemia, Ukraine, and two from southern Poland, in the mountains. So… I am pretty much Prussian/Bohemian/Ukrainian/Polish. The late 1700’s was as far as I could get back for my family. My daughter, on the other hand, through her mom, I could trace back through Stephen Austin, one of the founders of Texas, and then all the way back to Mary Queen of Scots.As far as my family… they were refugees after WWII. They lost everything there, and both my father, and my mother came to America as Displaced Persons, although they came separately. My father alone, and my mother with her parents and 9 siblings. This is my grandfather’s “Reiseausweis” or Travel ID Card for the voyage from post-WWII Germany, to NYC in September of 1952:And here is the ship they came over on, the USS A.W. Greely, that was named after a US General, Polar explorer, and Medal of Honor winner:This ship was in service from 1944, all the way to 1986. It had a pretty good run, and was an important ship, as it brought my family to America! They all came here under the sponsorship of a farmer near Buffalo, NY who would house and feed them in return for a couple years of what was basically indentured servitude on his farm, picking lettuce, strawberries and all of that kind of stuff that many migrant workers from Mexico and Central America do today.So… how far back do I have to go in my family tree before I get to someone whose first language was not English?Well… that would be me!I didn’t really learn English until I went to kindergarten in Buffalo, NY. We were a bi-lingual family. Actually, tri-lingual, unbeknownst to me. You see, my grandmother only spoke Czech, while everyone else spoke Polish. Somehow, I spoke in Czech to my grandmother and Polish to everyone else, without even knowing it! Yeah, I didn’t realize that until I was in my teens. That was kind of a weird revelation.So… yeah, there’s that.

A lot of Americans could learn a thing or two from her.But here’s the real question, what is she actually doing?Well, two things worth thinking about. One, while she’s amazing at what she does… a machine could have still done it faster, faster and more accurately. She missed 55–57. Not hating. Just saying. Two… she’s stamping. Stamps usually imply that a human has verified something with a firm and made a decision about it. That actually sort of explains why a machine isn’t doing it, but if she needs to place a stamp for some reason… why is it her job just to make stamps?I don’t know the true nature of what she’s doing, but it seems clear that she developed a unique level of mastery over a task that doesn’t actually need to be done.That’s the fundamental problem with bureaucracy… Creep.It forms as the simple pragmatic solution to some necessity of governance. Maybe it’s a need or a want, or just someone’s seemingly bright idea that people assume will help people.We need to make sure that people are _____ safely. Safety is important!That reasonable acknowledgement of a problem that may or may not exist, leads to someone coming up with a far less good way of solving the problem.So what about if, before people ever get the chance to ______, we make them have a _______ inspection, and we can decide if they are allowed to or not.But then a reasonably good idea always requires a little bit of extra hassle to make it work.So how do we know that had the ______ inspection? Have them fill out an ID-10T form. Then we’ll check the form and see what it says and they can do the thing they want.But if you make a task, then you create work for someone.Someone needs to look over these forms to verify that ______ has happened.Someone eventually realizes that there are so many forms that need to be inspected, that they start encouraging workers to move faster.We need to find ways to verify these forms faster.Then the bureaucracy begins to channel incentives to people based on the speed of processing the forms, rather than verifying whatever the forms are for.Alright everyone, we’ve brought an efficiency expert to give a special class on how to stamp forms faster! It should take your stamps per hour up 600%!At some point, it becomes clear that this isn’t an office to verify forms, or to make the world a safer place from the horrors of… whatever someone wanted to make more difficult to do… but an office whose entire purpose is stamping forms. That’s when the bureaucracy has broken down, because the purpose of the forms themselves have become lost.At that point, the bureaucracy is doing far more harm to the overall system then whatever good they gain from the “solution”. In the worst cases, whole functions are merely parasitical, taking far more resources to continue than good they bring about.We have to account for employee pay, who exactly are producing those forms, what losses are incurred by those who must fill them out, and even the costs to maintain the machine that prints out those inane forms in the first place.Sure, there is probably someone in charge of overseeing costs such as this, but that person too… is a bureaucrat.The problem is that bureaucracy itself isn’t wrong. There are pragmatic reasons for most jobs that have nothing to do with the actual purpose of the organization itself, far more valuable to the company than just pencil pushers. But, over time, every organization expands to the point that there are wasted processes too difficult to let go, but which people are afraid of what would happen without them. Other times, systems that make sense to absolutely no one, continue happening because of the power such a system puts in the hands of those that run it.Look, pretend there isn’t some times where people just want to make sure that you have to go through them with your ID-10T forms.Like the video example, however, bureaucracy has a way of making a failed system look like a productive one. You just can’t see that until it’s staring you in the face. Like a system that rewards and celebrates a person stamping forms at a few hundred a minute, there is a point where the people in charge have to take a step back and realize what they’ve created, a bloated monster that wastes people’s time, energy, and money, become the masters of a wasteful process, rather than a productive one. Worse, the more bureaucracy grows, the more corruption not only becomes likely, but the only way to get good work done.So the real answer of why bureaucracies are dirty words to some people, is that it is a process which always starts off well meaning, but requires constant supervision not to run away with itself. It’s a slippery slope, but when it finally falls off the cliff, it takes a lot of people with it. Eventually, it turns into a monster that prevents anything good from happening naturally. All that is because someone, usually someone with just a little bit too much self-righteousness themselves, thought it was a good idea to regulate something that no one else would, all in a way that put just a little bit too much power into their hands. When the best way to get things that most people would agree aren’t bad in and of themselves is to pay off bureaucrats or break the law, making decent people into criminals… that’s just a bad system.The problem with bureaucracy is that all organizations grow to eventually become those bad systems.To quote Oscar Wilde, “The bureaucracy is expanding to meet the expanding needs of the bureaucracy.”Relaxed. They also showed concern for your health and love for your family.Promises marriage as soon as he/she gets to state for leave that they asked you to pay for.They Requests money (wire transfers) and Amazon, iTune ,Verizon, etc gift cards, for medicine, religious practices, and leaves to come home, internet access, complete job assignments, help sick friend, get him out of trouble, or anything that sounds fishy.The military does provide all the soldier needs including food medical Care and transportation for leave. Trust me, I lived it, you are probably being scammed. I was selected for a summer internship 2016.I tried to be very open while filling the preference form: I choose many products as my favorite products and I said I'm open about the team I want to join.I even was very open in the  location and start date to get host matching interviews (I negotiated the start date in the interview until both me and my host were happy.) You could ask your recruiter to review your form (there are very cool and could help you a lot since they have a bigger experience).Do a search on the potential team.Before the interviews,  try to find smart question that you are going to ask for the potential host (do a search on the team  to find nice and deep questions to impress your host). Prepare well your resume.You are very likely not going to get algorithm/data structure questions like in the first round. It's going to be just some friendly chat if you are lucky. If your potential team is working on something like machine learning, expect that  they are going to ask you questions about machine learning, courses related to machine learning you have and relevant experience (projects, internship). Of course you have to study that before the interview. Take as long time as you need if you feel rusty. It takes some time to get ready for the host matching (it's less than the technical interview)  but it's worth it of course.
